I might get abused for this but, seriously, I don't get what it is about this coaching staff that is so different than other teams. Chad leaves here as a worthless, weak-armed, barely back-up QB, and suddenly is a top player in the league? I'm at a loss trying to figure out what it is that held CP back SO MUCH, and is now embarrassing one of the greatest QB's to ever play the game??? I'm well aware that historically Farve would throw some picks, but this is getting out of hand. What would another staff do, or play-call differently? Is that really the problem?
The coaches are trying to outsmart the other teams rather than simply outplaying them and aren't playing to their strengths. Against the worst run defense in the league it was 2:1 pass to rush, or something absurd like that. Schotty needs to call a balanced game, not too conservative, but not taking crazy chances on 3rd and 1 when your running game is going. Let the players get into a rythym...there's no consistency in the play-calling, and then Schotty isn't using one play to set up another (run, then play action). I think they just really need to simplify the offense - they're trying to be way too fancy. On the defensive side we are playing way too conservative at times...2nd and long and we rush 3 guys. The players also need to execute better and force some turnovers.
"Players win games, coaches lose them and refs ruin them." A coaches first priority is putting the player in the right position to be the hero, not to come up with some complex scheme that makes the coach look a like a genius. Schott figured that if he could beat KC by passing people would think, Wow, that Schottenhiemer is a genius, I would have just passed the ball, but he was smart enough to throw it instead.
How about: When you have a heralded O-Line, 2 capable RBs, and a QB that has clearly taken some licks the past few weeks and your playing the WORST rushing defense in the NFL your starting RB should have more than 5 carries in the 1st half!!!! There is also no need for the QB to throw over 40 times...... take away 1 run by Leon and the JETS had 70 yds rushing. Sorry, but that's piss-poor.
Wow. Really? That Bill Walsh was an idiot for doing the same in San Fran. Same for BB and Parcells in New England and Dallas. And holy shit...you can tell us that thats what Schott was thinking? Not "oh how do I beat them?" Plus, lol he did what you wanted him to.
The more you watch and actually pay attention to the plays the more you'd realize the deficiencies of our coaches. Not knowing when to call play-action, making 1st down your designated run down, not adjusting to what's going on on the field like if the other team is blitzing a lot or not. The biggest example of a bad play call was probably the 3rd and short shotgun formation. When it's 3rd and short there's a good chance a team is going to run. But they could still pass. That makes it very difficult for the defense to attack either the run or the pass. But when line up in shotgun then the defense can attack the pass all out.
This is what Steve Young said about Walsh: “Bill was blessed with one of the greatest gifts you can have which is the ability to see the future potential of another human being. It just so happened that football was his expertise. He saw in me much more than I ever saw in myself well before I ever had a chance to understand it. That is the ultimate compliment to the word coach. There’s nothing more a coach should be than to see the full potential of a player unfolded. I am eternally grateful to Bill Walsh.”" Bill Walsh did put his players in the position to be the hero, and that is why his players are as famous as he was and why his players loved him to the end. It is the coaches job to put the player in the right position to be the hero, what I said was correct.
The Jets have been getting too cute with some things. The tackle eligible plays just wear out their welcome when you run a basic dive every time you bring them in and refuse to run a play action off it. They ran that trap play for sixty yards with Leon and never thought to come back to it? There's no consistency. Schotty doesn't come back to what works he just tries way too many different things and get too cute with the billion motions and such. It's almost as if he goes into a game thinking he can only run each play once, other then a shitty dive play on second and long.
You do know that we had no blocking tight end playing that day and they were forced to use a journeyman . Each time he came in it telegraphed it was a run so they had to make an adjustment. That adjustment was throwing the ball with your HOF Qb against to rookie corners. Cant say I blame them here. Other places , yes
Fuck pennington... With him we wouldnt have won 1 game. Atleast favre can correct his mistakes and win us the game back in the final seconds like he did last week unlike pennington who couldnt. Good for him playing well with the phins to bad where 1-0 against him and his shitfins...
You guys do realize that the interceptions upped the amount of passing plays necessary to win right? No? It's just playcalling? We weren't trying to win, we should win by a specific gameplan? You realize when you're knocking the coaching staff's playcalling after the game based on the teams rankings is ridiculous right? If your QB throws INTs that makes the score closer, but you trust him to win you the game...what're you going to do? It's not like we didn't run on them. We ran 24 times against the Chiefs, and that was without blowing them out like the other teams. Why didn't we blow them out? INTs. It's not like all of Favre's INT's came when we were clearly winning (bad playcalling), but it's when we were still trying to win the game. Seriously...TF does the rankings have to do with it? Yes, they have to fix shit. But our problem was not playcalling, it was our infallible QB giving up 7 points to their defense, giving them the ball twice, and our D not playing a great game.
Of course. This offense doesn't establish a damn thing. 1. Believe it or not, Brett is very good at short passing game. His bread and butter is quick slant (integral part of any successful WCO) He's not tried that here. 2. With all that money spent up front for the OL, this team doesn't even establish the running game early on. You see, the key is to force the defense into 2nd and short/3rd and short and you don't take 20+ yard downfield shot on every fucking play. (Now that I think of it, Chad was renowned for his short passing games (aka dink-and-dunking) but as I recall, he never employed anything of the nature of quick slant under Schottenheimer's guidance, but then I digress.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- If Jets didn't have the offensive pieces to pick up enough of a yardage on first downs, I'd understand. That's not even the case. Jets can go with quick out (this is where Keller could get a lot of work done)/quick slant/quick hook on first down, because they have a good WR corps. (Stuckey rings a bell, anyone? Keller? Nah - he's a rookie so he should ride the pine this season. Right?) On top of that, they can grind it out on first down with TJ in the backfield, or they could opt for a counter run/pitch/toss with Leon in the backfield. Look at all the possibilities - and see how many of them are actually utilized on every first down. Quick pass plays they run is 95% swing pass to the RB (because all the WRs are running covered downfield) and 100% of TJ run is to the belly. How about a stretch or pitch with TJ once in a while?
i rarely look at the total number of runs vs. passes. A lot can go into that and make it lobsided one way. But watching and analyzing play-by-play some of the calls were dumbfounding to say the least.
this team has very good WR's for that too. very similar to the guys he had in Green Bay last year (albeit not as talented). they're tough and good at YAC which is the most important thing with slants and the WCO
thats why its so heartbreaking to not see it on a consistent basis. Why reinvent the wheel with Favre when the ones he's been riding on belong to a monster truck?
Seriously. Hypothetically, if Jets make a lot out of 1st downs, and ram the ball down the throat on 2nd downs for conversion, now THAT opens up the chances for play action. On top of that, if Jets converted 3-4 times (which isn't that difficult once you get going with WCO, btw) they shall have marched down 40+ yards, well past the midfield mark. More than likely, they'd be in 40 yard range to start another 1st down, and it's then whatever pleases them; they may opt for a safe option to go into 30 yard range (FG range + TD possibility) or just screw all that and go for 6 pt immediately. Of course, both are feasible option and defense cannot commit to either one of them. But in order for that beautiful PA pass to work, you have to work hard establishing the other attack - while not as "highlight-reel" worthy, that's actually the meal ticket.
One thing I can say is, Brett can do what Chad couldn't do; to lead the receiver with his quick passes into an open area, where the WR will have a chance to make a big play. Usually the window is tight, and the ball must find the receiver (VERY) fast. That's where the powerful arm kicks in. As I recall, Brett had a few 50+ yard TD passes last year that started with but a harmless-looking and rather "innocuous" quick slant to the middle - I just don't understand why Jets are not using it, if at all.
Yeah the slant, quick out, screens to leon all are missing from this offense. It seems like we'll just pick one of those 3 things and try them about 3 times in a row in a game, and that's it. We won't use all 3, and we refuse to mix it up. But you're 100% correct on the slant and quick out being Favre's game. That's the bread and butter, and that's what we don't use, and that's why the playcalling is so bad. You don't necessarily need to run the ball a lot early though. You can pound it late and that'll usually get better results. A good defense is very hard to run on early, you can really only pound it early and often if you've got the defense to stop them until your offense can get on track. I do not think we really have that, and it's tough to ask that consistently from any defense in the league really against the better offenses in the league. That is why I don't think the Titans will get anywhere. Fischer is one hell of a coach though, and if it works I'll be the first one singing his praises for being gutsy enough and building and coaching the team to pull it off. As for Chad, I can count the number of slants he threw on one hand. He was actually pretty good at it. He threw a few slants to Coles, 7 yard slants, with good zip and good timing. Actually he executed the slant perfectly in all honesty. If Schott would have mixed in the play actions then and made the running plays less obvious (if it's a lone back 7 yards deep, it's a run 95% of the time) Chad might still be our QB. Brett's 39 so I don't even know if maybe he's just too old. I'm not a big fan of Schottgini either, but it's hard to know for sure. But the way it looks to me, odds are we just have really crappy coaches since they've gone through a few QBs that seem to have good track records elsewhere. Pennington is, without a doubt, playing extremely well for Miami, a 1-15 team the previous year. Favre has a HoF career, but this team looks awful with him at the helm right now. Well, in about 10 hours we'll see how this goes again...
Yes I agree with your point. One needs to remember that Montana did not have the strongest arm in the world, it was average. That is why the West Coast offense worked so well for him. And Rice was so good on those damn short slant passes that he would consistently take to the house, splitting the safties and just GONE..... So yes, Walsh put his players in the best possible place to win based on their ability.
