I've been going over the match ups this weekend plus all the intangibles which will decide the outcome this game; I'll chip in later when we get some serious game threads going but one thing which I think will be crucial in this game is the first few series from both teams. If we can set the tone for the game and start to cool the rabid bolts fans early I think it will have a huge bearing on how this game will develop. What's your thoughts?
We've had more memorable 4th quarters...at least for me. It'd be nice to emulate the Raven/Patriots game from last week though. Frankly, this game scares me. I think the key is to disrupt Rivers and his timing. If he gets rattled, like most qb's he's prone to make some bone-headed plays. To that end, I would love to see us unleash our maniacs early & often. We need to have him throwing while backing up. To me, he's the strength of their team. We need to cut off the head of the snake.
First Quarter is definitely huge. We can't be playing from behind because thats when Sanchez gets rattled and starts throwing picks. We need to set the tone early by playing physical on both sides of the line.
Without a doubt, the Jets have to come out strong and own the game from the get go. We need to be able to manage the game on our terms not theirs. Essentially we need to do the things a team needs to do to win. Obviously.
I think getting the ball first will be huge this game. If we can get the ball first, and establish a nice 10-12 play drive we will quite that stadium. Even if we only score three we build a lead and begin to wear down their D. On Defense I think we should start with Rex's famed simulated pressure. Droping back in mostly zone coverage (with the exception of revis 1on1). Make rivers throw quicker than he has to since he's "so good against the blitz.". Then in the second half, when he doesn't fear the threat send the fucking house.
I'd rather start out on defense and force a 3 and out. Then we get the ball with what should be decent field position.
yes. Pressure UP THE MIDDLE will be key, and unfortunately where Jenkins will be missed. If the JETS can control the tempo in the beginning they have a good chance. Consistent 4.5 yds a carry will also help keep him on the sideline. :jets:
I think the most crucial part of this game is in the end we really need to have more points. Even if we score them in 3rd or 4th quarter, we still need to have more. At least that's the way I look at it.
I've been thinking this since before the Atlanta game. We always have a good shot if we can get up early. If we're ahead by 10 or more we've got a very good shot at beating anyone. Getting up early allows us to use our strength, the run game. Getting down forces us to expose our weakness, Sanchez being forced to throw, leading to picks.
this This team is built to control the clock, not "quick strike" attack (ala Peyton and the COlts) anyone have faith in Edwards catching a deep strike in the endzone to tie/win the game? especially if he's OPEN. hmy:
I'd agree with this except that the Bengals absolutely knocked us back on our heels in the first half of the first quarter of the playoff game and we just re-asserted control of the game after that. I think this Jets team can play from a score down early and still potentially dominate.
My sentiments exactly. I have enough confidence that the defense will either stop them or at worse, give up a FG............ And I'm being nice about the FG. Just to show them some respect.
That's why I think we should take the ball first this game. SD can score very quickly, and it's a totally different game if we are up 3-7 points after 6 min or down 7 after 2 min. Chewing up time and building a lead let's us slow down the pace of the game, a quick strike by SD many make Shotty revert to his old form of playcalling. And last thing we want is our OC pretending he's got john elway behind center again.
Just keep it close and avoid getting steamrolled. If we get down like the Pats or Packers did last weekend, it'll be next to impossible to get out of that hole with the offense we have.
I would normally agree with this, wholeheartedly. But the thing is, I said the exact same thing about the Bengals game last week. I really believed we needed to get off to a good start and take the lead early. When we fell down 7-0, I was very worried. But then we just took over the game. This team seems to be very tough mentally and I really believe they can hang in there after a bad first quarter and make it a game.
Its not unusual for our defense to give up a first drive score. I dont like it but it seems to happen. They seem to make good adjustments as the game goes on though. We'll see. I still think the key wil be turnovers. If we dont play like the Patriots we should be fine.
