A very long post but here goes.

I did a little research to quantify how the offense put the defense under such duress this season. To me, the findings prove that this offensive performance should go down as one of the worst in recent history of the league. It is abundantly clear that no offense in the NFL hung thier D out to dry more than the Jets and no offense in the NFL gave the opponent more "free" points than the Jets did. Although I have no statistics on the high number of 3 and outs putting even more pressure on the D I'm sure they were at or near the top of the league in that category driving the offensive misery index even higher.

The Jets gave up 363 points this year. You can legitimately say that the offense directly gave away anywhere from 107 to 129 of those points. A simply stunning number. About 7 or 8 points a game on average or between 30% and 35% of the total points given up for the season. Here is the breakdown for the full season as I went through every score against the Jets.

5 TD's scored where the opponent starts the drive INSIDE the Jets 20 yard line ALREADY in the red zone.

Dallas - 1 yard TD "drive" after a Sanchez pick (basically a pick 6)
Oakland - 13 yard TD "drive" after Cromartie fumbles a kickoff
Buffalo - 20 yard TD "drive" after a Sanchez pick
Philly - 17 yard TD "drive" after a Sanchez fumble
NYG - 19 yard TD "drive" after a Sanchez fumble

7 FG's scored where the D held them to 3 and out and the opponent DIDN'T get a 1st down. Can't ask for any more than what they did.

    Baltimore - 38 yard FG
    NE - 27 yard FG
    Was - 46 yard FG
    NYG - 36 yard FG
    Mia - 58, 40 and 44 FG's

    3 Sanchez pick 6's, plus a safety:

NE - Ninkovich 12 yard INT return for TD
Den - Goodman 26 yard INT return for TD
Bal - Webb 73 yard INT return for TD
NYG- Sanchez tackled in end zone

4 Offensive fumbles returned for touchdowns:

Bal - Sanchez strip sack, 6 yard TD return
Bal - Sanchez strip sack, 26 yard TD return
SD - Keller stripped after completion, 37 yard TD return
Phi - Holmes stripped after completion, 47 yard TD return

By my count that's 107 points. A whooping 29% of the total points the Jets gave up can be DIRECTLY blamed on the offense just giving away points.

There are 22 "honorable" mention points where the D was placed in a very bad spot and did the job for the most part. 5 FG's kicked by opponents where the opponent started in Jet territory and the D gave up ONE first down and FEWER than 20 yards each time. One 36 yard Buffalo TD drive after Cromartie fumbles a punt.

NE- 18 yards given up, 24 yard FG, drive started at NYJ 25 yard line
NE - 19 yards given up, 28 yard FG, drive started at NYJ 30 yard line
Was - 13 yards given up, 23 yard FG, drive started at NYJ 19 yard line
Jax - 20 yards given up, 50 yard FG, drive started at JAX 47 yard line
Den - 15 yards given up, 37 yard FG, drive started at NYJ 35 yard line
Buf - 36 yard TD pass after Cromartie fumbled a punt, drive started at NYJ 36 yard line

I can't help but think how those 107-129 points given away compare to the rest of the NFL. It's a long off season. If anyone wants to do the same research on another team or two for comparison purposes it could be quite an eye opener on how bad this offense really was and how underrated this D was in keeping this team from completely imploding.

Which, is what happens, predictably, in an offense that doesn't have the ball GONE in less than 4 seconds the majority of the time.

    Nice piece of research

I don't think the Cromartie fumbles should be counted on the offense. They're on the ST.

I'm pretty sure those numbers ranked last in the league.

It sounds pretty bad, but without having the context of the other teams in the league I'm not sure what to make of it.

Great research lol..Wonder what we could do when we don't start out with a bunch of 3 and out gassing out our defense.

Well, we know the Jets gave up more points off turnovers than any other team in the league because the announcers talked about every time we had one.

I can just about guarantee that that would put us pretty low if not dead last...I would be interested to see the stats as well. Those turnovers and points off turnovers were like being waterboarded every sunday last season!

Not for long with Hunter at RT starting. Sanchez won't survive 2012 in serviceable condition should Hunter play up to his shitbowl standards.

We need to fire Shotty again.

    Once was not enough.

The team had a terrible time when it came to turnovers. We opened up the Chargers game by handing them a TD (Keller) then the Eagles game to (Holmes). Then all those dropped punts and thats why went 8-8.

Fix those and we can be much better team next year.

I didn't do exhaustive research on this but the Giants gave up 74 points directly off of turnovers including 3 Eli pick-6's and 4 TD "drives" where the opponent started inside of the 20 off of a turnover by the offense (not special teams). I just tracked the FG's right off of a turnover not the 3-and-out variety and the Giants only gave up 3 of those off of turnovers inside their 40.

The Giants did not have a single play where a player other than the QB touched the ball and then a turnover happened for an immediate TD. Santonio Holmes was the difference between the two teams in that regard. You put two TO-TD's more on the Giants and two less on the Jets and the Giants would have been worse.

    Agreed. I'm all for this.

Do it again, just for fun. This time, however, don't say it was a mutual decision. Say he flat out sucked then make sure the door smashes into his ass on the way out.

Hopefully they address Sanchez's ball handling too. Every QB throws INTs and Mark definitely had a few ugly ones this season, but he needs to learn how to protect the ball better. Shitty O-Line play or not, he's got to stop holding that thing like a loaf of bread. Tuck it away or get rid of it.

Good stuff... The 3 & outs killed our defense. The defense was on the field a lot longer than they needed to be. That's why it kills me when so called experts talk abt the jets defense not playing well. If the offense doesn't score but gets a few first downs, and the defense gets some rest our defense is still dominating.

Also those stupid ST turnovers were ridiculous! Unbelievable! I mean our ST is regarded as the best year in year out, but hold on to the ball plz.

One thing abt the Girly men is they were not losing the turnover battle their last winning streak. I don't even know if they had more than 1 turnover the whole playoffs.
Its the simple basic things that win games sometimes.

Thanks for putting this together. Good job. Our offense had a very rough year. Lets hope with a full offseason and appropriate roster changes we have a huge improvement next year.
