http://www.thejetsblog.com/2012/06/20/7-offseason-stars/#more-56893 7 Players that have impressed in OTAs.
Ill be honest the most interesting name on this list by FAR has to be Ricky Sapp Part because he was a talented pass rushing prospect who got derailed by injuries But also because this guy was a great prospect at 4-3 DE. So the idea of having Coples Ellis Wilkerson and a healthy rejuvinated Ricky Sapp on the line could be quite a scary thought Although ill be honest with myself and realize that the odds are overwhelming that he will never do anything of substance as a Jet or in his nfl career.
his only shot at the roster is if Whites foot doesn't heal and they deem Turner useless as a last receiver because he doesn't play teams. Even then Ganaway's chances are extremely limited.
Sapp has the unfulfilled potential, and since he will never be an every down LB, I don't think the knees will be considered too much of a risk factor against keeping him as a solid package rush backer/special teamer. And since we all know Rex just cant have too many corners, why not have 2 guys named Ganaway on the 53? Edit: oh, he's a WR? Yeah, he's screwed
hopefully we borrow a page from the Giants and keep Ganaway around despite his UDFA standing (a la Cruz). Rex himself said he wanted the team to be more like the Giants. If he continues to impress, there's no reason to allow him to hit waivers and try to stash him on the PS. The Giants didn't risk it with Cruz, but just risked it with TE Ballard and lost him. Jordan White is injured, Patrick Turner is mostly a waste of a roster spot now that we have Stephen Hill. Turner was thought of as a red zone weapon, but carried no ST ability. Hill is now a much better red zone weapon and is a 2nd round pick. Ganaway sounds like he has much higher potential on ST due to speed and ability, making him a natural choice over Turner. Holmes, Hill, Schilens, Kerley, Ganaway as our top 5 WR isn't bad at all. If he's standing out, let him keep showing what he's got. The true test will be with pads on because so many speed guys impress in shoes and shorts. As for the rest, obviously excited about Coples. The idea of 4-3 nickel sets with Wilkerson and Coples at DT and Maybin and Sapp at DE is great. That speed off the edge with that power/disruption in the middle will cause a lot of problems. Sapp is a perfect fit as a project for our defense. He's a 4-3 DE/3-4 OLB 'tweener, and he'll be doing both here. Had a TON of potential in college with a legendary first step and get-off on the snap. He's first step was even faster than Maybin's and Maybin was a Top 1st round pick for that. Hopefully he's healthy, as he could be a real contributor in nickel situations. He nor Maybin can be full-time OLBs/DEs because they struggle vs. the run, but they can both rush the passer in obvious passing situations with tough-to-duplicate speed and quickness. And both are relentless.
The best part, IMO, is that players like Ganaway, Griffin and Sapp are all players at positions with some question marks at them and have shown great potential. These players are getting reps because the depth chart at these positions are unclear and can potentially develop into something more than useful. The likelihood of any of these players (aside from Coples and maybe Brown) at contributing this year are pretty slim, but it would be nice for a change for us to have that Victor Cruz story...
Turner has to still be in the mix...Holmes, Hill, Kerly, Turner....two small quickos and two big burners.
Simply because its not often you see success stories like that. I mean this guy was available for any team to grab, and then we put him on the practice squad which means anyone could of grabbed him yet again. If front offices thought there was a good shot of this man contributing they would of gobbled him up. Especially with how incredibly valuable pass rushers are. It has nothing to do with my personal opinion of him, but rather the odds of a guy who has never played a snap in the nfl coming out and being a legit player. Especially one who hasnt played in a game in over 3 years
It sounds to me that the Jets will have a lot more depth this season at many positions than they did last year. That will be important when the injuries start to build up later in the season.
Ganaway I'm going to def observe this guy see what all the fuss is about. He could be a special player the way Steiny keeps talking about him If he's good on ST Turner is gone. We got a big body in the endzone with Cumberland. Turner is replaceable unless Sparano sees improvement Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk 2
