The Jets making it to the Playoffs this year, has only made the Jets fan expecting a lot more next year. And Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini knows that. I expect them to do many things to improve this team. I think we are only a few players away from being an elite team. 1. Defensive Line - We really need a better pass rush, I know it got better towards the end of the season but it still isn't good enough. I also would like the Jets to put more pressure on the QB without having to bring everyone. I think the best player to get is via draft. DT Amobi Okoye from Louisville or DE Adam Carriker from Nebraska 2. Cornerback - I think our secondary was decent and a shut down corner would make it great. Asante Samuel or Nate Clements 3. Running Back - Leon Washington has done a fine job this season but our running game is still very inconsistant especially against a tough, physical defense. We really need a good running game to set up the play action pass. Clinton Portis: There has been many rumors about Washington wanting to trade him. If they are willing to trade him, I would give them our late 2nd rounder, next years 2nd rounder, and our 4th rounder. This may seem like a lot but we have to give to receive. Michael Turner: Many people here really likes this guy but I wouldn't give up our 1st rounder for this guy. 2nd rounder... maybe. Michael Bush: If we aren't able to get the players above then Bush will do. He could have been a 1st rounder if he did not get injuried. 4. Linebacker - I think an upgrade here is a must. We were ran over by pretty much everyone. Adalius Thomas or Lance Briggs or LB Lamarr Woodley from Michigan More depth in on the Offensive Line and more physical players on defense and we are ready to go. If we can get upgrades in these areas then we are ready to be serious contenders. My dream moves would be: DT Amobi Okoye for the Defensive Line CB Asante Samuel RB Clinton Portis from Washington LB Adalius Thomas
I wouldn't trade our third for Portis, forget about 2 seconds and a fourth. We do not need a better back, we need better run blocking and a QB that can stretch the field.
I know we probably won't get both Samuel and Thomas, that Amobi Okoye will go before our 25th pick, and that Clinton Portis might not be for trade. But Tannenbaum and Mangini knows that the expectation next season will be extremely high and they know that have to get more high caliber players.
Can someone provide some info on Adalius Thomas. I have been hearing a lot about him as of late and somewhere I heard the Jets really want to go after him.
Just a little insight on Samual-- I spoke to a knowledgable Pats fan today, and he said Samual was extremely overrated, and that if you look at his picks, about 8 of them just fell into his hands- they weren't great plays, thats just what happens when you have the best D Line in the game. He said he looked poor in coverage most of the time, but got the picks, so everyone loves him. I tend to think he is pretty good-- better than anyone we have back there, but I'm sure he'll be demanding a very big pricetag. If the last few years taught me anything about the CB slot, it is that even good, not great ones get 10 million dollar bonuses. This guy will be looking for over 15 million I'm sure, and will probably get it. I'd much rather spend that money on Steinbach-- if we got him, and nobody else this off-season, I would call it a huge success. He will probably demand about the same money as Samual, but I think he would be a much bigger upgrade over Moore, than Samual would be over Dyson/Barrett/Miller/Coleman. Check out this years CB Class-- there are a ton of 6 footers with speed- it seems like a good year to scoop one up in the first 3 pics, and we won't have to pay 15 million.
I came up with this first day lineup on...another place, back in early December. But it still sounds good, even though I don't think Okoye will still be where I put him, his stock has gone up dramatically. Anyway, here's a reprint... 1: Gaines Adams, Defensive End, Clemson: From a physical standpoint, Adams has everything you look for in an NFL rush end. Long, muscular frame, long arms, and strong lower body. He's shown a great first step, and an ability to explode off the edge. Great versatility, playing the Bandit end, where he's both rush end, and linebacker. Big and strong enough to stay stout in run support, but his knack for getting into the backfield, is what makes him such a coveted player. 2a: Marshawn Lynch, Running Back, California: Not quite as tall or fast as Peterson, Lynch is nevertheless a cat-quick back who's really good when he stays healthy. The Jets, Packers or Ravens seem like possibilities, either in the first round or second. 2b: Amobi Okoye, Defensive Tackle, Louisville: Very strong, run stuffing defensive tackle. Got overshadowed last year, by Elivs Dumervil and Montravious Stanley, but make no mistake, this guy is a fireplug in the middle, and one of the best run stoppers in the country. His frame lends itself to moving to a NT position in a 3-4, in the NFL, because he is very adept as absorbing the double team, and strong enough to fight through it. A very good tackler, with surprising quickness for a player his size 3: Matt Herrian, tight end, Nebraska: Based on his yards per reception average, it's easy to realize his skills after the catch. Herian owns good quickness and speed for the position. His elusiveness and agility rivals that of most WRs. He runs crisp, clean routes and can break away from traffic using his speed and athleticism. Fluid with excellent hips and solid change of direction skills. Dangerous after the catch. Prefers deeper routes and frequently has some trouble in the middle of the field because he's more a receiver than power TE.
We would be lucky if ANY of those three were there with our first round pick! Gaines Adams?? He's a top 10 pick, and I think any Jets fan who things Lynch will be there at 26 is going to be dissappointed. I love those 3 guys, but we couldn't even get all of them if we had our 3 picks from last years draft.
I would love to see us get Michael Turner/Clinton Portis, Asante Samuel/Nate Clements. But most of all I think we should get a solid NT and a stud DL, such as Adalius Thomas/Dwight Freeney. I would also like to see us get a an upgrade at the OLB position. I would have to say, no matter what we do in the offseason, it's gonna be good no matter what happens. Tangini already proved this from their first try last year. They can't possibly mess up. Here's to a wonderful offseason!
Samuel's good, but not worth the pricetag. I don't want to overpay for some of those FAs that are on a dozen teams' wishlists and I see "Tangini" taking a smart, economical approach to FA.
Lol...Gaines Adams  Sometimes the predictions on this board are leaps and bounds beyond incredible....
Portis isn't that good and he's injury prone. We should get a back through teh draft forget trading away picks to get one.
another rb isnt going to fix the running game, we need better run blocking or all you will see is a repeat of last year with different names on the jersey struggling to average over 3 YPC
Why, a pick's a pick whether you pick a RB in the draft or take one from another team. You know what Portis can bring - you don't know what a R2 rookie can bring. It's not as simple as the pick being worth more on draft day. And I would argue with Portis not being that good or being injury prone. He's very good and hasn't lost a lot of time to injuries.
Portis is one of the best RBs in the league. He has been injuried lately but I think he is worth he risk. He is only 25 years old and can run for over 1500 yards. We can look at the RBs in the draft but we have a late first rounder and early second rounder... not many good running backs will be left. Bush might be left but he is also injury phone. As for Turner, the Chargers are going to put a first round tender on him and I don't think his worth much. I rather give Washington 2 second rounders, 1 this year and 1 next year and another high rounder for Portis.
Someone with some sense. First we fix the line, then we get a back. All this talk about Portis and Turner is fun and all, but it's the line that makes the back look good, usually not the other way around.
DT to look at Joe Anoia from Georgia Tech is probably going to be a late round draft pick but he would fit in perfectly with Mangini. There's not a harder worker out there and the guy is scary strong but still only 280 lbs. Can easiliy add some more weight and play NG. He was first team All ACC this year and had 5 sacks from the DT position.
