Why would a team give up a first round draft pick for the honor of overpaying Abraham to an 18 mil signing bonus when they could draft a DE for one quarter of that money who could be just as good? Late second round, IF the Jets find a sucker. More likely, a third round, if they don't end up just releasing him instead.
Bad thing is, we don't know what the new CBA is gonna bring so its almost impossible to put fair market value on any player right now. Abraham, based on his history in the league, should command a DP somewhere in the 20-30th overall. No higher or lower than that. He's another player that needs to prove he's what used to be called: a "Money Player".
Well I'm glad all of my choices have gotten votes.... must be a good poll Abe doesn't seem like a real shutdown top 5 DE to me, but he does seem like a real great top 10 DE....so late 1st round makes perfect sense IMO
I think Abe is a special defensive player that changes the complexion of a game with his presence(look at the Oakland game). He proved last year that he is capable of staying healthy. While he is easily worth a mid-first rounder, his value is down as we have no leverage to trade him. It would be nice if we could at least have the option of keeping him in order to create some trading leverage. At this point, realistically we will be hard pressed to get an early 2nd rounder for him.
I am willing to bet, given Abraham's contract demands, that no more than 3 or 4 teams would be even interested in him as a UFA, and this is the point most people seem determined to ignore. He is a top ten DE, not top five, but wants to be the highest paid DE in the NFL by what, about 50%? His value is knee high to a toilet bowl because of his outlandish contract demands.
the only one in the draft that would be a better pickup than abraham would be Mario williams who would not be 1/4th the price.
eh i dont think his trade value is all that high seeing how: 1. Other teams know were trying move him/he wants to be moved 2. Wants a juicy contract 3. Has health issues 4. Teams dont like trading away high draft picks for anything.
Did I say BETTER? No...... what I said was a late first round DE could be as good as Abraham at 1/4 the price...... I get a kick out of people who decide in order to make a point, they put words in someone's mouth.... READ.
That's the thing. Abe is a tried and true, top-notch pass rusher. Teams know that as long as he stays healthy, you can expect to see around 10 sacks a season, loads of QB pressures, a player that demands a double-team, and a player that offenses have to gameplan around. You can't expect that to be guaranteed out of a rookie, no matter how promising he looks. There's always that chance he can end up as another "Ryan Leaf".
There is a difference between worth and value. I would say he is worth a 15-22 but at most might net a 30-34
I'd say the splits are a little thin. The poll should be broken up by the top and bottom of rounds, and not pick numbers.
In a day or 2 I'm making it again but it will be more specific....right now I'm just trying to get the main idea
I don't think we will get a first rounder for him, but maybe a 2nd and a late rounder...that would be a pretty fair deal.
45? That seems random...do you think he will go to the team holding #45 or were you just saying somewhere around 45?
Some people are really dumb. John Abraham is a special player and would be a great acquisition for any team no matter what pick they give up. Sure, they COULD possibly draft someone better, but they might not. They're getting back a 27 year old in his prime who plays amazingly good every game. I hope we keep him.
