Apparently there's a chance he could back out if Murray signs in philly. I firmly believe we need a speed back complement to Chris Ivory. I know spiller has been the talk but if Mathews doesn't sign in Philly he could make a TON of sense here. Thoughts ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Spiller is meeting with the Saints. Haven't heard any noise about him meeting with the Jets. But yes we desperately need a speed type back. _
I think people are too hung up on trying to find this blazing fast runningback. Mathews is an OK player that gets hurt pretty much every year and can struggle with fumbles. I'm pretty confident that Powell/Ivery is a good combination heading into the season with a low level receiving back free agent or training camp cut and/or late round draft pick. There are also still a ton of free agent runningbacks out there. The longer they're available the more their salary is going to decrease.
David Johnson. explosive, tough runner, awesome pass catching skills. Only FA I would want is Pierre Thomas. Matthews is a talent but why would you want a guy who gets injured every year without fail??
i'll have to take a look at Johnson.. I really, really like Tevin Coleman from Indiana. Not sure if I want the Jets to blow a 2nd round pick on a RB but if they do I love that kid. He reminds me so much of DeMarco Murray, Adrian Peterson.. taller type runner but doesn't mess around. Nice vision, darts straight to the second level of defense. Not a dancer or a power guy, just runs with a quick burst. He's the home run hitter that would be a nice combo with Ivory IMO. Led the NCAA with the most 60+ yard runs, averaged almost 8 yards a carry at Shitty Indiana. There's something to be said for that because they have a poor OL and play some tough Ds... I just think you wear a defense out with a power, hard hitter like Ivory all game and then mix in a downhill, quick acceleration runner like Coleman late in games and it could be a hell of a combo
I'm not a big fan of his. He was ok last year but overall Hes been an underachiever with the Chargers. I'd rather draft a RB like Abdullah.
Ryan Mathews in a passing back role minimizes injury risk. He got hurt a lot when the primary back. I think people rely too much of assuming a hit in the draft. Given the moves we've made I think a more proven talent in certain areas are called for where in others (safety, pass rusher, o line) the draft is appropriate. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Coleman is the best value at RB in the draft. Comes from a totally shit team, and still dominated opponents (even power house schools) that knew he was getting the ball. I'm REALLY surprised this guy is flying under the radar like he is.
Its an amazing year for RBs though in the draft. Talent all the way through this class at the position. Plus it's a position that lends itself well to rookies, less of a learning curve. That's why I say we take advantage of that and don't sign a guy and sit that position out in the draft. It's kind of like last year.. they signed Decker and figured thats enough work for the WR position, ignoring that it was an incredible year for the position in the draft. I really hope they don't sign a guy like Mathews and make the same mistake this offseason
Good to know. I admit depth in drafts is not my forte at all. Outside of the first round I'm generally clueless. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would rather save our 'proven FA' acquisitions for the O-Line and fill things like RB through the draft. Shit RBs get beat up and have such short careers as it is. Makes a lot of sense to get a young fresh one just off the farm.
we do need a blazing spead back because you need that element..our offense doesnt have any speed at the wr postion and right now none at rb...we need a game changer
I like your thinking, I am looking for explosiveness and big play ability. Im kinda on the fence about Coleman as a main carry guy but you are talking rotation. When he gets a lane he can make plays but Ive been reading reports that he's more of a one cut runner, he's not very good running east-west, and his hands aren't anything special. you disagree? Seen him projected more as a 3rd rounder. Johnson is special because he is a big and agile power runner with good speed and pass catching skills of a wide receiver. He should go in the 2nd, but like you said it might not be wise to take a running back that early.
