For me: it's gotta be #88 Al Toon. When he got drafted, it opened up an era of airing the ball down the field that I have never seen before as a Jets fan. And the guy was just so explosive. I would be on the edge of my seat everytime he had the ball. It's sad his career was cut short
I think most old time fans that date back to the onset of the Titans/Jets would go for for the 60s players like JWN, DM, MS, EB, GS. Since most on this board came on board years & years after the onset of the team there views will be quite different then those who saw the 60s team play
Undoubtedly true, and as my avatar indicates, it's true for me, as my favorite Jet is Don Maynard, and has been for more than 40 years.
Thats doesn't make them any less valid though, does it? Remember, I said "favorite", not "best". I never saw Joe DiMaggio play, but I wouldn't discount his greatness.
Depends on your oulook to me favorite & best is the same & usually is linked to players you saw play which then either tells your age & skews the results
I'm sure some peeps will submit great long lists , but narrowing it down to just 2 , for me its .......... Greg Buttle : Because he got me into football and the Jets , and for the amount of entertainment that football and yes the Jets have given me , thats priceless. If you're reading this Greg , you still owe me a jersey!! Wesley Walker : Simply because I started to watch him in the Toon/Walker era and I visited the USA for the first time in '85 , Walkers # and had his shirt. Then found out that he only had peripheral vision which made all playing that more special. To be honest there are so many its hard.
#1 - Al Toon - Had better stats than Jerry Rice in his first 5 years #2 - Johnny Hector - For a couple of years was really a beast, scoring 10 and 11 TDs ('88 / '89 I thin) #3 - Mo Lewis / Marvin Jones - A killer tandem in the middle for Gang Green #4 - Mickey Shuler - One tough SOB #5 - Freeman McNeil - Leading rusher for nearly a decade
According to your posts, you've been a season ticket holder since the mid 60s, which makes you at least 50 years old, probably older. One question: Why do you sound like a 4 year old? Oh, and to answer the question: Stan the hudlum Blinka.
Mine is a current player: Curtis Martin. I go a long way back with the Jets, too, although growing up in Rochester, NY, it was tough to get a lot of media on them way back when. Still, Curtis to me is the epitome of a pro athlete. THere are not many peoplein this world I would consider a true role model, but he is one.
All time favourite would have to be Ken O'brien, maybe not the best in the team at that time but he symbolised my hopes and frustrations as a new Jets fan in the 80's. Current fave would have to Vilma.
I liked Brian Cox. He brought a toughness, an attitude. His stay was short, but Bears fans, Phin fans, Jets fans and Pats fans all loved the guy, and fans of the other teams hated him.
and for those youngsters(not me) your use of only initials may make it hard for them to know who youre talking about
I agree it is annoying. I am not sure who he is talking about with "MS". JWN= Joe Willie Namath DM= Don Maynard MS= Matt Snell or Mark Smolinski EB= Emerson Boozer GS= George Sauer, Jr.
Ken O'Brien. He entered the NFL the same year I started watching, became the starter in the year I started following the Jets and I rooted for him until the end. I even kept half an eye on him in Philadelphia (I never thought about switching teams though!) The 1986 season was the epitome of what it means to be a Jets fan, and O'Brien was the team in microcosm, brilliant for 11 games, then totally fell apart. But for those few weeks in mid-season, when the Jets were being talked about as possibly the best team in football, and they were demolishing teams like Seattle (in the Kingdome) and Denver (on MNF) it was the best time I've experienced as a Jets fan. Honourable mentions to Chrebet (no need to elaborate there), Jeff Lageman and Marvin Jones.
