Just wondering if anyone has seen this on the NFL Network? I have it DVR'd. It really is amazing. I've heard my Dad tell countless stories of being at Shea for the AFL title game, and watching SB III. Sadly, I wasn't born until a few years later. I find the show, interesting, informative and riveting. To hear how Philbin disliked Namath, but later grew to respect him and his toughness is fascinating. To hear Namath, to this day, think he was elected team captain in '68 due to his talent, while Philbin knew it was the complete opposite, is great. To see the Jets go all the way (something I'm obviously yet to see) still gets me choked up. I'd love to see Rex Ryan doing a new version of this show if the Jets were to win a modern day SB.
It's so cool. Between Ike Lassiter breaking Joe's jaw, Joe Walton (D-coordinator then) ripping Namath apart on a plane ride after throwing 6 picks (3 returned for TD's) against the Bills, to being 19 point favorites against Denver and Namath throwing 5 picks in a loss. Also, the "Heidi Bowl". It's amazing how a talk from Jim Hudson taught Namath to rely on the Jets defense and not put the pressure in himself. It turned the season around. Also Joe becoming the first QB to throw for 4,000 yards in a season (in '67) is touched on. Also Maynard being the guy who received, fumbled, and recovered, the first OT kickoff ever in the Giants/Colts "Greatest Game Ever Played". My favorite line (as narrated by Alec Baldwin), "In 1968, Namath became more than just a captain. He became the catalyst behind a championship run that changed the game of pro football........forever."
It def is remarkable. Were kind of having the same issues now with Sanchez needing to become a leader and stop trying to win games himself. Erie
After the Hudson talking to, Namath learned to take the pressure off himself and place it on the defense. He actually had four games in a row where he threw for less than 200 yards and had 0 TD passes. All 4 games were Jets wins. Who would ever have thought that?
I was at the NYJ/Oak game live & in person & to this day it is still one of the best games I ever saw!
My dad was one of last players out of the locker room after that game. My mom would wait outside of the locker room and said he always one of the first ones out. After that game it got totally wasted! The score of the game is on the side of the ring.
