We all know how quiet its been so far in free agency and it makes you wonder. You can say whatever you want about "Idzik Playing it smart" or whatever but the fact remains that this roster severly lacks playmakers. The Jets were supoose to be god awful last season and they were in the hunt towards the end and finished 8-8 and almost had a ticker tade parade over it.We've seen how overconfident the Jets get in the past. After two Afc title games we thought we we're better then we really were and collapsed and haven't made the playoffs since. So with 40 mill in cap space and 12 draft picks what is gonna end up happening here?Because let's be realistic the draft may get us two definte starters if we are lucky maybe 3.So people can stop pointing out that we have 12 draft picks because most of those picks end up on practice squad or cut.So we haven't overpayed in free agency but we also havent paid anyone accept Decker. And what is overpaying in the NFL nowadays?top players are gonna get huge contracts no matter what and the market will decide how much that is.Im starting to get the feeling that the Jets think they are the smartest person in the room again and think because of last season that they are 1 or 2 players away
There's still a long time before the season starts. There will be a lot of players released between now and then. It would be nice to make a big splash in FA, but we can field a decent team without 10mil. Players.
Why don't you start a petition to reinstate Tannenbaum for the GM of the Jets? Seems like he fits your mentality perfectly.
I don't see anything that indicates that the Jets are over-confident or even confident for that matter. We all knew that last year was the first step in rebuilding, will it take this year to finish the job or will we be looking into FA this time next year to finish the job? My guess is the later
Revis ,,,,,we won't know until the season is under way or possibly over,,,,,people can bash your post but you did not say to go out and sign 10 million dollar players or high priced players , hell guys have signed on other teams for a lot less and some could have helped or added depth here. I don't know if the jets are playing it smart or confident or close to the vest but time will tell if they over evaluated themselves or the talent on this team. In my eyes this is a make or break year for Rex so 8 and 8 or worse could easily show him the door,,,,,,
The only problem with signing released players are that you are getting the dregs of other teams. I don't want to field a decent team - I want to field a great team. I'm aware a lot of that hinges on the QB position, but if [insert QB name here] does well for us this season, I'd like to be in a position to capitalize. What does this mean in terms of signing? I'm not an NFL GM so I don't know. I was hoping the formula would be signing a bunch of good guys at value and a few 'marquee' playmakers. I'm afraid Idzik is going 100% value and we field a very nice, economical, cap friendly, mediocre team.
I think if the Jets thought they were 1 or 2 players away they would have been heavy spenders in free agency like the Broncos. I think the GM understands they aren't a player or two away and so he's being patient with free agency and not over paying for short term patches that likely won't make the difference between a championship or not. The one player he spent good money on is a guy in his prime at a position that desperately needed a shot in the arm.
I think Idzik understands that we have a young team with some talented pieces that will eventually have to be paid if we don't want to lose them. With that in mind, it doesn't make sense to tie up the cap paying "A money to B players or B money to C Players" (saw that quote somewhere). Just looking at Seattle, their going to be paying through the nose if they want to retain Sherman, Thomas, Russell, etc. Maintaining cap flexibility to ensure we don't lose all of our A level talent is the long term plan.
Idzik is not building for this year, he is trying to build a team that will be successful long term. Obviously he doesn't feel comfortable overpaying guys even w/ cap space. maybe next year there are FAs he is willing to overspend on? these guys have their eyes on years down the road nit just this offseason.
That's exactly right Junc. And its the right thing to do for the long haul, its just sucks that at the same time the Pats are doing the opposite, going for it this year as they should since time is running out for Tom Boy. It's just tough year after year with no chance of winning the division without a championship. I guess I have no choice but it gets harder every year waiting for one god damm special year. It ain't gonna be this year, not with the holes we got. Damm!!!!! Idzik is in year 2, I am in year 34
NE is making one last run w/ Brady, he can't have many years left. they are in a different position than us. I think we can be very good net yea, be a playoff team but a lot has to go right.
Idzik seems content to fill holes with B players on a short 1-2 yr leash to buy time for him to find his own A+ players from the draft.
The Pats, the Broncos, the Ravens, the Falcons, the Vikings...who did I forget? The idea that good teams don't look for help in FA is crazy.
Idzik may be over-confident in his approach how to field to top NFL team but I doubt he's too over-confident in the Jets.
Nobody said anything about overspending and you of all people should know that the last time (the only time?) we went to back to back championship games was after we spent in FA.
