Gm 1: McCarthy vs Colon Gm 2: Cahill vs Sabathia Gm 3: Harden vs Hughes Hughes gets a shot at redemption vs the A's who beat him up last time out. A quality start from Colon would be nice, he has really struggled of late. Just wanted to say: Fuck Boston. Thanks.
I dunno, Colon's given up 2 runs or less in 4 of his last 5 starts. It would be nice to see him get more length, but he's been doing alright. I'll be at tonight's game; coincidentally I was also at Colon's last 2 starts at the Stadium also (both wins.) Maybe I'm his good luck charm (or maybe it's the HGH.)
The problem with Colon is he's channeling his inner AJ lately. He starts off on fire, and then suddenly falls off a cliff. The reason he hasn't given up more runs is because he's gotten some good backup from the pen.
Brandon Allen with an upper decker into RF. Only the second homer in the new ballpark to get to the upper deck. Branyan hit the first. edit: now in the second, some knuckledraggers yelling HIP HIP JORGE non stop through the washed-up DH's at bat.
Ken Singleton: "When you get to the playoffs, it doesn't matter who you play. They earned it." So yep, all playoff teams are equal now. Yankees announcers, everybody! Jeter is 2/2, raising his average even further. Closing in on .300. Now .294
I think it's all over for the fat man. Anyway, 5-0 in the 7th Singleton says that Chavez just singled against "his former mates." Not really.
Even if Girardi didn't call for the bunt, Jeter would have done it anyway. They're both idiots in these situations. I can't even get mad because I don't expect any better from either one of them. I was pleasantly surprised that Teixeira didn't ground into a DP, though. Anything offspeed and away and he is a total mess.
Didn't see the game. How did Colon look? Before tonight, he hadn't lost velocity, but had struggled to consistently locate and, the major difference between his first and second half, had lost a lot of movement on his 2 seamer. Is it safe to say the lack of movement is what's doing him in? Either way, he's pitching himself out of the playoff rotation.
Brutal game to watch from the stands, everyone thought Swisher's ball was gone off the bat. It's hard to find a tougher way to lose.
Colon's fastball doesn't have much movement anymore. He can only be effective if he can locate his fastball, and if it has late movement. If it doesn't, he's a below-average starter.
Yup, his two seamer was awful against KC so he tried to mix in more sliders. I actually thought that Bart looked good for the most part--aside from the home runs, that is. I was perfectly happy with his effort through 6 innings. I definitely think that Girardi should've gone to Wade in the 7th, but that's easy for me to say in hindsight.
Yeah, I was sitting there with a "WTF" face when Singleton said that. As far as Jeter, I don't see all the people who said he was washed up coming out to say they were wrong (I don't mean particularly on this forum, I mean everywhere). He's hitting his ass off. Everyone probably remembers when I agreed with having Granderson do it earlier this year. Last night, as Kay and Singleton were agreeing that bunting is what they'd do, I was thinking "No way! Jeter's killing the ball. No way he bunts here!" Well, I was wrong. What a stupid thing to do. I'm all for the sacrifice, but not when you have no outs, need two just to tie, the fastest guy on the team on first, and arguably your team's hottest hitter at bat who was already 3 for 3 plus a walk, in the bottom of the motherf--king ninth! Genius Girardi had this to say about it: "You want those two guys in scoring position if you can," Girardi said. "Any base hit is going to score both of them, you know that. That's how we play. We sacrifice from time to time; not a whole lot." Hey dipshit, Brett Gardner practically is in scoring position when he's on first. Watch some film before you just hand away critical outs. The Yankees' plate discipline in the ninth was awful. They watched pitches they should have hit, and swung at stuff they couldn't do a lot with. Cano should have ended the game on the last pitch he saw. (It's funny to say that they had awful discipline, considering they had the bases loaded, but a lot of that was terrible umpiring, and a bad fielding play.) Forget lack of movement. I could forgive that if he were at least putting his fastball in decent spots. He's leaving pin straight fastballs between the belt and letters, right over the center of the plate. He's throwing batting practice, and if he was a couple of MPH slower on the gun, he'd be giving up 3 homers every inning. It was fun while it lasted, but unless he starts getting movement on his stuff or locates better, he's done.
Mark Teixeira remains the most under-appreciated player in baseball. I'll gladly take a low batting average and a few poorly timed pop-ups in exchange for 40 home runs and the best defensive first base in baseball.
