Tom Brady restructured his contract saving the Pats another $7.2 mil on this years cap... A signing coming? Maybe Welker's extension?
Welker's extension, if he gets one, would free up additional cap space, they wouldn't need to clear room in order to extend him.
definitely not welker, his extension is unlikely to count for more than the 9.5M the tag does, Might be doing some extensions, Chung, Vollmer, Arrington are all entering their last years
My first thought was a signing or trade. They had room under the cap already to sign their draft picks. I can't think of who's out there still who would command top money on defense... the only name that makes sense from a money standpoint is Mike Wallace, but they've been signing receivers like crazy. Maybe they're unloading a first rounder (or two) on an established player?
^^^ I have a hard time believing it's Wallace... he's gone on record this week saying he wants more money than Larry Fitzgerald. I just can't think of anyone else who's (currently) out there who would be targeted if the freed up cap space is actually a precursor to some kind of move. Although Welker's cap hit under the tag is higher than it would be with most "normal" deals, this could still be tied to an extension for him. Maybe they'll front-load bonuses for this season and then have cap-friendly salaries for any subsequent years? I also doubt they'll give him more than a two or three year offer, so the money would have to be right for him to agree.
As much as I hate them they're probably the most well-run organization in terms of both salary cap management and the draft.
when you have as good a coach and QB as they do and can contend for Super Bowls significantly on their strengths, you don't have to over react and over spend on any player or draft picks which leaves you with tremendous flexibility year in and year out.
To boot, Belichick has as much job security as a coach can have in the NFL. A lot of coaches would have taken a ton of shit for things like the Haynesworth experiment, etc. I just want them to use draft picks for once. Please.
This x10000 If you have a top QB like the Pats then you can get by with average players pretty much everywhere else, when you dont then you need to overpay to get above average players to compensate. Bradys cap numbers are $22m in 2013 and $22m in 2014 - do you think they will extend him or is this counting on the TV money increase (no real danger in backloading Brady like this as he is unlikely to suddenly turn crap over this time period)?
