The announcement was made by Jets’ Head Coach Herman Edwards. Hackett, 57, joined the Jets on January 24, 2001 after having served as the head coach for the University of Southern California from 1998-2000. A veteran of 35 years of coaching, with 16 years of experience on the NFL level, Hackett compiled a 91-53 record as an offensive coordinator, along with seven playoff appearances and four divisions in his nine seasons overseeing the offensive play-calling and game-planning. He broke into the professional coaching ranks in 1981 as the quarterbacks coach of the Cleveland Browns (1981-82) before moving onto the San Francisco 49ers from 1983-’85 and the Dallas Cowboys from 1986-’88. Following four seasons at the University of Pittsburgh, Hackett returned to the pro level as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 1993-‘97 before taking over at USC. "Paul Hackett and I sat down and had a heart-to-heart conversation today," Edwards said. " I have known Coach Hackett since 1972, and have a tremendous amount of respect for him and the knowledge that he possesses, and the job that he has performed so diligently the past four seasons. Paul has worked tirelessly in his efforts on our behalf, and we appreciate the commitment he has made and his hard work. He has been a significant contributor to the team’s success and the development of several key offensive players for us. With that being said, I have accepted Paul’s resignation from the offensive coordinator’s post at this point in time. Looking at what we need to do to move forward, Paul recognized that a change needed to be made for a number of different reasons. We will now begin the process of identifying and interviewing candidates for the position with the goal of increasing our offensive productivity and consistency. He’s a good man, a good father, a good football coach, and has been loyal to our program and what we’ve strived to achieve. All of us wish him the best of luck in the future. " "Coach Edwards and I agreed that the time was right to move in another direction," said Hackett. "There are other opportunities that I would like to explore at this point in time. I leave knowing that I’ve worked extremely hard and had a hand in the organization’s recent success. We’ve enjoyed some wonderful moments and went to the playoffs in three-of-the-last-four years, something that has never happened in the history of this organization. I depart knowing that the team is in the capable hands of a dynamic young quarterback in Chad Pennington, a future Hall of Fame running back in Curtis Martin, and good young players at the skill positions and along the offensive line. I wish Coach Edwards, the coaching staff, the players and the staff nothing but continued success." Later in the afternoon, fifth-year quarterback Chad Pennington was reached for comment. “Paul’s had four great years of being the offensive coordinator of the New York Jets," he said. "Having three playoffs appearances in four years looks good on anyone’s resume. Paul has been instrumental in my development as an NFL quarterback. I’ll always be thankful for his hard work and the time that he spent with me. I trust that Coach Edwards will bring a strong, enthusiastic and experienced coach to direct our offense. It is my job as the quarterback and our job as an offense to step up and play well during the 2005 season.” IT'S OVER!!!!! SB XL Champs!!! :hackett:
Is this really nessasry to start all the old threads again.. Some of the BS ones are classic and need to be brought back.. But Jets news from over a year ago?? I don't think so..
Greatest thread in TGG history. I don't care that the Dinger kind of sucked and even if Shotty sucks... Hackett is the worst play caller in football history and I do not miss the 3rd and long draws.
I brought it back because this is probably the best thread posted on TGG. Remember how happy and joyful we were when he resigned? Well, I think we should try and be that happy.
We just keep doin like that, We just keep doin like that, We just keep doin like that!!!!! Really Impressed so far. http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/index.php?content_id=2563§ions_id=#2563
I'm glad you reposted it Twin. That was truly a great day and when you're in a bad mood, just click on this thread and it will bring a smile to your face
Who should we get to replace him? I heard Mike Heimerdinger could be available and that he has a good relationship with Herm. He's done a pretty good job as OC of the Titans, I mean look what he did with Volek last year. Also he runs the shotgun, Chad would really excell in that formation throwing to Moss and McCareins. Speaking of J-Mac, I heard he has a great relationship with Dinger. He'd be a great guy to bring in to replace Hackett. Just an idea. Thoughts?
You guys don't realize that herm had a strangle hold on every offense since he was here? Hackett's offense looked exactly the same and predictable as Dinger's...why? Because herm was a douche bag.
It wasn't Herm, it was just that Dinger couldn't open up the offense with Brooks Bollinger and Cedric Houston playing the majority of the year. If Dinger had Penny and Curtis healthy and playing well, he would've opened up the playbook a lot more.
This is one of those threads that just doesn't die. Every time its ressurected it gets a little chuckle out of me.
