we made it too the bye week on the heels of an absolute stinker in ohio, a game that 90% of the posters penciled in as a W for the jets.... personally, i care not about the W-L record, i car about building a crisp, talented club that can win anywhere in the NFL and not benefit from a cupcake schedule. i want to see a couple of "home" AFC championship games for this team and not a token playoff appearance. anyway, enough of the crap, now we see how frustrating re-building can be. forget the baker play, forget the miffed punt, etc. those plays may have mattered in the W column ultimately but yesterdys game was a stiff reminder just how far this club has to go and also gave a sneak peak into what our D needs going forward. the D needs to be re-built period..... we need upgrades in speed and athleticism, particularly in the front 7..... Funny just 1-2 years ago some people in the league thought the jets had a very good front seven that was finally being used properly with henderson aboard. most of these guys are the same except for Abraham.......usually when a club has to be built from the ground up the defense tends to perform better than the offense and leads the pack - unfortunately the jets lack BOTH run defense and pass rushing skill - the 2 most basic needs of a competitive defense. the only unit that can escape a major overhaul is the secondary - guys like rhodes and coleman are keepers. drob, vilma and ellis - i think 2 of these 3 guys will NOT be here next year. imagine what mangini could do with a guy like wimbley.... i expect the jets to be very active in re-building the defensive personnel this coming offseason. the system is in place now we have to get the players to fit it. with the offense - i am not going to come here and bash anything that CP did/didn't do yesterday - though his limitations come very clear against certain defenses and schemes like the browns had yesterday. i am thrilled with the rebuilding of the o-line and they will put a finishing touch on it this offseason but it will not get the emphasis that the defense deserves. skill players - we have a couple guys that can do it but wouldn't it be nice to have consistent weapons like many other teams have - i do not think coles has a future here - the jets would be foolish to pass on a top WR next year - whether its in the draft or FA. the TE spots are actually looking good but the limitations of the running game and CP almost eliminate a passing threat to the TE's. So, at the bye i am obviously dissapointed in the performance of the defense - they need a major overhaul and it cannot come anytime too soon. i thought that would be the stronger unit this year but oops. will there be a second half improvemment - doubt it - the horses are just not on the roster. we have someplayers on the "O" and the o-line has shown much promise. we just need to get a big fish at WR and possibly even at RB to really make this unit a threat to all defenses - especially the hybrid 3/4's that are becoming very popular these days. enjoy the week off fans - i am off to FLA to disney with the family herd come friday. jil
The beginning of your post is where you lost me. The reason teams play games in the NFL is for the win loss column. After the season you can look back and see whether you had a team that improved or was "crisp". However, every fans mindset coming into a season should be that we want wins. Even if these wins do not contribute to a playoff berth.
Most of your points are fair. Why do you think Coles is not a good fit? We are talking about LC right? He is a definite keeper. How could you not want this guy? Yes, I totally agree on D. There will be a real overhaul done here from January through July.
Jil, you've been around this board as long as I have and you know there's still gonna be posters insisting on a playoff berth as the be all/end all. The point you raised about the pains of rebuilding are finally becoming clear to the masses. This team is far from a finished product and the sooner folks accept that, the better. I know it seems that the Jets have been rebuilding or retooling for the last 40 years but we really need to be patient as Jet Fans now. The defense will in all certainty be overhauled before TC '07. If Tangini saw the need on the OLine and addressed it, there's no reason to think they won't do the same for the defense. You're also right in that we do need a burner on WR to pose a plausible game breaking deep threat to defenses. Lets all just relax and enjoy what's ahead in '06. No SB dreams please. They're just not relevant to this team as presently constituted.
I agree with everything.....the bright spot by far is the Oline...and that defernse is one of the worst we've ever had.ever. I hope people will stop with that jon vilma probowler bullshit. Its bullshit guys. The man has had about as bad a year as a so called "leader of the defense" can possible have. At this point hes not just disappointing, he sucks. Ellis is invisable. Robertson obviously is the biggest bust weve had in 15 years. Victor hobson I think is still looking for his first tackle as a jet. 20 years later and we still havent replaced pat fuckin leahy. Our QB has the happiest gay feet in the pocket Ive ever seen. Forget the arm strenght, thats not even the problem. He looks like a complete homo once there is the slightest bit of pressure on him. For those who keep saying theyre happy with the rebuilding so far are missing a lot here.....the defense needs to be built from the ground up.Weve made ZERO progress there.zero. what is so encouraging about that? I like the coaching staff, I do. except maybe this sutton character who to me is playing a 3-4 but not really. Maybe Im wrong but I thought the beauty of the 3-4 was to be able to confuse offenses and blitz different linebackers from different spots. Whats the point in installing such system if we dont have the players to run it? and obviously this falls on mangini. Then people say "well we have to teach them the system and then get the right players in." So what the hell is the point of teaching it to these slobs who hopefully wont be here? I am a bit confused by that whole mess. But to say '"Im happy with the progree" and 'we're way ahead of schedule"....NO WE'RE NOT! we aint a head of shit
I'm not throwing out the possibility of the playoffs yet. I'm also not throwing out the possibility of the Jets losing the 8 games they have left. Theyre unpredictable.
mangini's only had one draft year to rebuild this team. it's going to take at least three before he has his name on it. patience please, for christ's sake! also, i remember reading an article last year about the pats player's complaining that mangini was playing it safe, rather than playing an agressive attack style defense. the pats defense got a lot better after that. people forget that mangini had only one season as a defensive coordinator and was average at best at it. he's young and still in the process of learning the coaching profession. that too needs patience people, patience. give the man 3 years before you starting asking for the cheese and WHINE!!!!!
The funny thing is we have a burner, LC. If pennington puts that long ball on the money Its a touchdown.
i disagree that we will get rid of vilma... the whole d-line is a bunch of busted first round draft picks... if we can become more solid up front our linebackers such as vilma will play better
Anyone who is "disappointed" with 4-4 is a product of their own overblown expectations. 4-4 is where most reasonable people expected this team to be. Earlier in the year, I said the Jets will rise or fall based on their ability to: -Stop the Run -Run the ball This team cannot consistently do either. Once they can, playoffs become a reality. -X-
We can dismiss the playoff talks now. If we had won and moved to 5-3 with 2 weeks to prepare for the Pats, there would still have been a chance. Now its over. We're going to win more games and I'd like to see the Jets win as many games as they can, but we knew it wasn't a playoff team even with the easy schedule. As long as we finish ahead of the Fins and the Bills, its a great accomplishment this season and shows we are heading in the right direction.
Well this is one terrific post & should be framed. To bad most on this board will not catch the meaning of what your posted
Ok Jil...let's talk rebuilding... #1...we're "rebuilding" with a quickly aging QB whose never played a full season. #2...we have no REAL threat at RB...you wanna tell me Washington is the long term answer and someone who'll be a SUper Bowl caliber RB? hahahahahaha #3...Name ONE STUD on Defense... Vilma? yeah...he gets 10 tackles a game (not this year) but unfortunately, they're all 7-10 yards upfield #4...Perhaps you have a short memory, but as a Jet fan, it seems like every 4 years I have to hear shit about rebuilding...ok...I've gone through about 5 of these bullshit "rebuilding" processes...by my last count, the last time we had a shot at the Super Bowl was early 3rd quarter against Den in 99... At what point can we as Jet fans stop this ridiculous talk about "rebuilding" and WANT A MOTHERFUCKING CHAMPIONSHIP? I've supported this team for 25 years (since I was 9 years old in 81) and have seen a lot of horseshit from them.
Yeah, I was really hoping there wouldn't be any playoff talk until after we got to 5-3, if only that could have happened. But of course, being in NY, most people had to jump the gun.
Chad was either injured or high in the 2nd half. Am I the only one that noticed? He looked nothing like anything we've ever seen from him. We pride ourselves on his decisions and accuracy, and we got none of either for 30 minutes. Even the candidate for worst ref call of 2006 (or the TD that wasn't) is overshadowed by the Jets having timeouts, a minute left, and only needing 4 yards. Big number 77 is quickly becoming one of my favorites. He is officially the "light a fire under their ass" guy on the DL. The one (and probably only) thing I like about Sutton is he benches either Robertson or Van Oldhoffen in the 2nd half based on their sucktitude and puts in Moore. Every game our run D magically comes to life after Moore gets in there. Sorry, but I see too much of a trend here. Bench the old white guy, start Moore at NT and Robertson and Ellis at DE. There were actual Robertson sightings in the 2nd half! With that said, lose the "grills" kid.
Fire all the coaches, release all the players and mop the floors at Weeb Ewbank Hall, it's the only answer.
I noticed this too. Moore needs to see more action earlier in the game. The D is almost instantly improves with his presence in middle.
This is somewhat true, but they also started run blitzing a lot more, which is what I thought they would do right off the bat in the first half, make Frye beat you. Moore does hold the line of scrimmage better than DROB or VOH, but he is not the only reason the run-d improved in the second half.
