Hypothetically, if the jets cut Chad and Bryan Thomas after June 1, wouldn't the cap hit/savings balance out? I'm even less sold on Thomas than I am on bringing Chad back. Thomas's resigning ranks right there with the Anthony Schegel pick as Tangini's biggest blunders. While I think most of their other moves have been good, here's one vote for making Clemens #1, signing a cheap viable backup QB , and then getting a real 3-4 LB to pair with Pace (Gholston?), and FINALLY release Terry Dumbay's second biggest mistake (Thomas) (DRob =#1 mistake). My opinion only.
I say we keep Thomas. With a new nose tackle, and calvin pace of the other side we should see some improvement. I'd like to keep him around to see how he does with more talent around.
Thomas isn't going anywhere. I hope now that we have pace in we can move Thomas back over to Weak OLB...the position he played in when he had his contract/breakout year.
What happens if the first string QB goes down? Guess what -- it's more likely than not today in the NFL. There are very few QBs that don't get blasted. Having a "a cheap viable backup QB" -- whoever you might have had in mind -- would not be a safe bet. How long do you think this "cheap viable backup" would take to learn the BS offensive scheme? Do you think they might give him eight plays to run? How well do you think he would do with receivers and RBs he has a hand full of reps with? Be serious. Hating a QB isn't fixed by throwing him away. You have to build a queue of competent QBs over a period of time. Otherwise you are cheating the rest of the team. You guys who are "Maddened Out" think it's a simple matter of yanking this one out, throwing him away, and picking some other resumes from the lot and plugging him right in. His resume just picks up where it left off -- and away we go. You have no respect for the all the painstaking team work that has been invested by these NYJ players we have now. Just because we got rid of some obviously dead wood, doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of players on this team that are excellent that were disadvantaged by the dead wood as much as the score was. In my opinion, the QB situation will take care of itself in this upcoming competition. Bryan Thomas has been significantly invested in by this FO / CS, and I don't think they share your opinions of him at this time. The Defense is a team, it's not a bunch of resumes. The Offense is a team as well. The guy who calls the plays is the orchestrator and he has to know a lot about every position and what it does on every play, and he has to know how to read the defense in terms of the plays he has to run. This does not come quickly. I wouldn't trust David Carr to do this. I wouldn't trust Dante Culpepper to do this. I wouldn't trust Kitna to do this. I wouldn't trust Simms to do this -- hell, he has a more grevious physical problem to confront and hopefully get over than Chad ever did. I also wouldn't trust any rookie to do this. Why do you think this team looks up to Chad and Kellen? It's not because they are nice guys. It's because every team mate knows they know what to do, and they trust them to do it. These team mates watch what these QBs do every day all day. And vice versa. There's no substitute for the experience these QBs and their team mates have with each other in this offense. It is vital to take advantage of all this work. Playing fantasy football doesn't take any work. Playing Madden doesn't take any work. Just a bit of bored whimsy. We should respect this football team we dwell on so often and so intensely. These kinds of comments displace anger and frustration about losing, without really understand why and how we are losing. And that's what we should be focused on. Not tiddlywinks.
Very good guys, you are all right on the money, let see what they all can do with the proper tools in place. Thomas had a damn good year playing on that outside LB spot and just maybe once he is back there with Pace on the other side we end up with a pro bowler. Don't laugh, a guy can dream can't he. Yet, we know that this guy did play like he did and that was not a dream. So we can only hope that because of all these moves we will see that player this coming season and in the future.
I respect your opinion, but you can't make an atom bomb without uranium. Chad has a ton of heart, but he has a weak arm and no mobility. Most of the games last year that Chad started the CBs were jumping the routes and the safeties were in the box. A ton of respect from your teammates is important but it doesn't make the ball get to the receivers any faster. I think jet WRs deserve double pay waiting for Chad's pass to get to them. Chad is a great competitor but not much of an athlete and he doesn't even have a high school arm. Like I said, it's my opinion, but I think we'd save a ton of cap space by moving him--I also think Bryan Thomas' decent HALF YEAR in 2006 was the exception in his 6 year career, NOT the norm. We were 4-12 playing them last year, you think we got a lot to lose?
I agree with the people that say Thomas should stay. I doubt they would actually consider cutting him anyway because he's not a bad player. I expect our front 7 as a whole to play much better.
I can assure you that you CAN build a nuclear bomb without uranium. (You might need plutonium however. haha)
Very good post. Even though I want to move on, Chad is nowhere near as bad as he looked last year nor as bad as he's made to be here. Manning and Brady would have sucked behind our OL last year. Cutting the veteran QB who knows the offense and the players very well is the opposite of a good move. Chad is not a great talent at QB anymore, but like any QB his performance will go up with a better O-line and good, healthy weapons.
Same with Clemens though. When you call the same out pattern 4 plays in a row, the CB's have a tendency to react faster when you run the play the 5th time.
HAHA! The surprise of 08? When did we draft this loser? 2002? I've been calling for the Jets to release him for months now, he might have been the worst defensive player out there last season. Look at the tape, he was down right horrible.
I agree that Chad is a good back up, I just have no desire to see him as our starter. If the cap numbers work out I have no problem with him being around this season.
Talk about going over the top. Do you have some history with tomdeb? You may disagree with cutting two players who had poor seasons last year, but there's no need to throw all that "Maddened out" stuff around.
Sorry...you're wrong! Actually, you can make an atom bomb with any fissile material. Plutonium is one example...
I'll take "Correct, Well Explained Responses" for 300, Alex. Two words: Eric Barton. I can take any ONE (1) game and make a lowlight reel for the fucker. It would be called, "Every Jets Defensive Play: Let's circle Eric Barton for Emphasis".
