Chad knows that no team will be willing to sign him as a starting QB or be willing to pay him more than a backup salary. Every team in the league has a starting QB and in many cases teams have two starting caliber QBs. Add in the fact that 3 posible starting QBs will be drafted in the top four spots and it doesn't leave much demand for a injury prone QB who has done nothing worth noting in the last three years. That's not even considering there are 3 other 1st day QB draftees I feel could be starters. Whitehurst is rising up draft boards after the Senior Bowl and a good combine. Many people on this board are wanting Croyle or Jacobs. Just three of the teams that have two starting caliber QBs are Chargers (Brees is a FA), Falcons (Schaub) and Titans (Volek). I hope our FO is considering all this when they are talking to Chad's agent. With all the possible draftees, FAs, and possible trades where we could get a starting QB, why would any team give a glass QB who has done nothing lately more than guaranteed league minimum with incentives? I personnally would take any of the QBs mentioned over Chad and most of these guys would take a lot less money, just to be the starter. We need a new face of hope and all Chad has brought to our table is dispair. The teams holds the position of power, but does this young FO know how to use it?
And what is the difference? They both got millions of dollars, gave their teams hope for the future, and ended up disappointing everyone.
The difference??? Try one has won 2 playoff games and the other was a total piece of garbage and didn't win jack shit. To compare the two shows how little you know about football my friend.
yea they are real different, Pennington didnt have hype coming out of college the jets expeceted him to be vinny's backup and even when he was forced to play when vinny went down no one expeceted much from him....and although he did good ....in the long run I guess they were right.
Yup I saw Chad on the sideline destroying his career, yup he purposely broke his wrist, and tore his rotator cuff two times, silly chad let me f up my career and take the money. WTF is your problem, I am sure Chad's whole career all he wanted to do was come to the Jets and then have his career end on a couple of freak plays. Hell last years injury was not his fault, if they did not rush him back, then who knows. I am sure in the back of his mind he knew he was not ready, but you know what he did it for us, he wanted to make the Jets legit, return some respect to the franchise. How many years have the Jets been the laughing stock of the league, he has given us some hope, some respect around the league, and when he is down, what do guys like you do, kick him, typical I guess. Can we just stop the Chad bashing and let the FO figure it out, support the dude whether he is here or not. And you know as well as I do what will happen if he gets cut, KC will sign him to a modest contract, he will sit behind Trent Grren for a year get healthy, start the following year and eventually win a SB with them, its what happens to former Jets players
who drafts a QB in the first round to be a backup? He was expected to start for us in his second year, but he couldn't beat out Vinny.
Alot of teams draft QBs in the first round and have them sit. Just looking at the past few years, Rivers, Campbell, Aaron Rogers (sp?, GB), even Big Ben was a backp-up until Maddox got hurt. And that is only the past 2 years, there are more if you go back further. Many great QBs were backups where they were being groomed. It is not so unusual.
He wasn't forced to play when Vinny went down, he was forced to play because Vinny sucked. His being given the starting job had nothing to do with injuries. And you don't draft a QB with the #18 pick to be a backup. You draft him to be a franchise QB somewhere in the not too distant future.
I hope the Jets do resign Chad, but I agree with the original poster that he's lost virtually all of his leverage. This f---g agent is going to drag this thing out to Sunday and I don't think the Jets should allow it. Make a final offer, give him a deadline of midnight Friday or Saturday, and that's it. The loss of Mawae has disillusioned me to even the illusion of a competitive team in 2006, so I care less know about Pennington being there. Chad, sign it or move it. We've got a dozen other leaks to plug.
1st round QBs were expected to play immediately until Pennington came along. With his success it became acceptable to sit a 1st rounder to let him "learn the system" and "adjust to the NFL" from the back-up position. All you examples are post-Pennington (you can add in Palmer and even Eli as the Giants were hoping Warner would play well for a year). It is difficult to find this as a common practice pre-Pennington.
uhm, you actually just reiterated the point you were trying to dispute. they are drafted in the 1st round to be starters, not backups. they are simply back-ups until they are ready. that is completely different than drafting a QB in the later rounds never expecting him to be a starter.
Dude what type of world do you live in? Do you not realize that a QB that can watch and learn his first season is better prepared to lead a team the following season. CARSON PALMER! HELLO!
Guys that started for their team in their first year: Montana Marino Kelly (other league but still) Aikmen Young and they are all in the HOF Manning started from day one and already has his spot earned. McNabb started from day one and is 2/3 the way there. How many of the last QBs to be placed in the HOF did not start in the first year? ZERO Until lately most QBs that couldn't start by the 8th game were concidered a bust. CHad has always been slow at learning new offenses. Maybe a low wonderlic score is the way to go. Less thinking and more performing. McNabb scored a 14 and he was in 4 straight championship games and a SB. I truely hope Chad is not a Jet come 1201 am Monday.
At least because Chad was injured. Ryan Leaf just plain out stunk it up. (BTW good luck with West Texas A&M)
I didn't say how it all went down, but the end result was the same... They both got millions of dollars, gave their teams hope for the future, and ended up disappointing everyone. Does it really matter how we got to this point?
