I guess my question is, can he be worse than what we've seen in preseason?

Worst case he's the same or a slight upgrade to what we have out there now, best case he recaptures his old form @ age 36.

Yes its a roster spot but I say we drop a current CB on the off chance he's got anything at all left...

He definitely won't recapture his old form as he's lost a lot physically. With that said, I still think based on football IQ and experience alone he's an upgrade over the scraps we currently have at CB. He's definitely worth a look and if he stink the joint up, you can cut him at anytime.

I would hope that Rex's brother would give him an honest assessment.

Is Clyde Gates really still on this team ? I would cut him and sign Bailey in a heartbeat,,,,but I would sign any cb out there and cut Gates

He's been battling injuries and he's lost a good bit physically. Truly a great player in his prime, which is now past. Not a good pick for our youth movement team.

I'll take Champ on a walker over any of our CB's.

I seen a lot of promise in Allen at CB, maybe champ could pull a Woodson and slide back to safety if nothing else

He might be a good mentor though, even if he's not playing for the entire season. We have some young cornerbacks, and they could really benefit from his presence. I don't really see any other cornerback bring that kind of value to the team. I think we should sign him if we get him on the cheap. I would love it if that guy went into coaching and became our cornerbacks coach in the future.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see Idzik as as someone who will bring in an old vet to be a 1 year band aid. I think he will go with youth and evaluate the potential.

Careful, you're not picking up "yesterday's reputation."

But in lieu of the injuries and cuts, yeah I might kick the tires to see if his plantar injury is resolved (along with a Rob-to-Rex Ryan assessment).

If he comes cheap than it can't hurt to bring him on board, but remember, Rob Ryan isn't a baby when it comes to defenses. He knows how to run a defense and knows how to run it well. If he was part of why Bailey was cut, then you have to believe there isn't much of anything left. Rob Ryan wouldn't have cut him if he had anything left in the tank.

If the Jets bring in Champ it has to be strictly for the slot - Champ CANNOT play on the outside any longer.

If that's the case, that would be a tremendous upgrade over Wilson.

I wonder if that's what Idzik might be thinking. Let Milliner get healthy and keep Allen at the other side but upgrade the slot.

Well in that case, don't sign any free agent cornerbacks at all. Right now there's only over the hill players and really raw young guys available.

What potential? The only CBs with potential are Milliner, Walls and Trufant. Dexter is on IR. Idzik should look at a veteran.

You're forgetting about the 50 or so young rookies or 1 yr guys on practice squads all over the NFL who are sitting behind established DBs and can't crack the 53 just yet.

edit...nm, I see you mentioned the young guys, but you did it in a demeaning manor as if no young player could ever contribute to our needs at DB
