If the Jets offered Abraham what Atlanta offered Abraham,,, a month ago,,, he'd be wearing Jet green.
I think Denver made out like bandits, but I'm happy with what we got. I think Abe IS worth the 15th pick, but I thought 22 would be good value and 31 would be passable, so I'm not complaining.
UNFORTUNATELY Guys - the defense already has 3 big contracts to digest - drob, vilma, and ellis - adding a fourth with abe would be tough to do considering his demands...... it is a very tough call - those that ridicule the move have a point and those that praise it also have there due...... you can argue that the jets will add another "big" contract come draft day on the defense with the possibility of williams, ngata etc - but they are likely to be backloaded and intially cost less than abe. jil
Yeah, but Vilma made alot of tackles because Abraham didn't. I don't think we got hosed in this deal at all. I am very happy about it. Granted, we do have to do something to fill the void, whether it be through new more advanced schemes or FA, or draft; but we got an unhappy player who was very expensive off of our books. Don't get me wrong. I liked Abraham a lot until he started this childish whining crap in the middle of the Herm debacle and the transition to Mangini. He really came across as an unappreciative litlle kid when he did that. When he plays down at Atlanta, they will probably be nick-naming him Abrahamstring.
All of that is true. Except they left out one detail: That Abraham needed to be moved because he was not going to play for the Jets. We got all we could for him and now we can continue filling holes in our team. I have no major issues with Woody Paige, he's just not that smart. Bayless is a total dumbass though. This "analysis" is very par for the course for Skip--just read the trade in the paper and assume that you know all of the details of it.
No that is a fallacy. Abraham was offered a long term deal. The contract that Ellis signed was originally offered to Abraham. When Abraham refused it, Ellis jumped all over it. It is a very good contract, but was not enough for Abraham because he wanted to be paid like a top 5 DE. Even though it is disputable that he is a top 5 DE. People like to forget that the Jets did offer a contract, but Abraham was greedy.
The fallacy is that Abraham didn't want to play in New York. He did want to play in New York, for a big contract. Let's face it, the Jets screwed the guy with this franchise player stuff. He deserved the deal he wanted FROM THEM, just based on going through that.
I rarely criticize media guys, but Bayless is the exception. He's an arrogant pompous jackass and makes Mike Francesa look like Mother Theresa.
And he also told the FO before he got tagged the first time that he was ok with the franchise tag, then bitched to the papers and didn't show up to camp. He went back on his word too. He WAS offered a contract. A contract that is very lucrative, you think Ellis is complaining? But it was not enough for him. Even though at the time the contract was offered he hadn't played a full season yet and was going through is off the field issues, he still demanded more. The Jets made an offer and he was greedy. Why should they offer again?
please explain how they screwed him, they have the right to franchise a player, in making that offer, they offered him an 8+ mil 1 year guaranteed contract. if he played well this season then he either would get his long term deal or get franchised again for about 10 mil. Getting franchised 2 years in a row was the best thing that ever happened to Woodson.
Because the Jet pass rush will now be non-existant. They lost too good a player for too low a pick. #29 stinks. They should have held out for #15 and if it didn't happen, just keep the guy. Now they'll trade their 2nd rounder and #4 overall for Leinert, big deal. Too many people fall in love with these mock drafts and over do alot of these prospects. After pick 15 the draft is a crap shoot. And they are getting Leinert, it's obvious now.
Franchising these guys, screws them. It takes away large signing bonuses that these players live for. Jets treated the guy awfully.
how about some forward-thinking here? Vilma has been in the NFL for only two years. He's considered undersized for his postion (like Abe) yet continually remains healthy. He's a vocal leader and cares more about the team and winning than everything else. Not to mention, he's a very very good LB. Vilma, much younger and experienced than Abraham, is light years ahead of Abe and that's why Vilma will get the big contract versus giving one to Abe who is almost 30 and has a very questionable attitude. You don't offer a long contract to that; especially when you're in rebuilding mode. cheers
Kinda like how you're overrating a guy who has never performed in a big game, has had injury issues, problems on and off the field, and has openly criticized the franchise on several occassions. But he deserved a huge contract right? I'll take the 1st rounder and run.
how is it obvious? we have 3 QB's on the roster and we have many holes to fill. we now have 3 picks out of the first 35 picks, which goes a long way when you need to address so many areas of need. Furthermore, if Mangini adopts the NE philosophy, he'll get the most value out of those picks, not pawn them away for the "big splash." cheers
Amen. Abraham was worth the 15th pick. Getting the 29th, and allowing Atlanta to trade out of 15, and pick up extra consideration, was imbecilic at best.
Yeah, run to last place. I'm not even a big Abraham guy,,,,, but #29 is awful. Yes, take the first rounder and run if it's a top 15 pick,,,, not 29,,,, awful.
Read the newspapers today,,,, it's all but done,,,, defintiely gonna happen. They aren't looking to stock pile mediocre players. They'd rather have one stud.
