Everybody yakking about the DL reeking havoc...shouldn't ints follow? Revis is supposedly solid. Even Cro looks in good shape. A decent pass rush and talent behind it... This could be the year of a #1 D. Wouldn't that be fun.
"Cornerbacks and such...." Boring summer thread title of the decade. But yes our secondary should play well off of our d line and it should create chances for both units. If a QB can't find someone open he will get sacked or force a throw leading to a possible int or a sack.....If the d line forces the qb into a shitty throw the secondary will have a chance to pick it off...
Ah ha! Excellent analysis. Would you say that the relationship between DL and DB can somehow incorporate the LB symbiont into a complete Symbiotic relationship for the entire D community so that all could mutually benefit and possibly evolve into predators at the top of the food chain?
Would love for the Jets' D to put up some points. Their last TD (that I can remember) was Allen's brilliant picking off Brady and taking it to the house. Man. Things looked so hopeful back then.
We can also say our 'lock down secondary' will lead to more sacks as QBs scramble around looking for an open WR. We should get 100 sacks AND 100 ints EASY
After the Browns week 1 I hope we can put a good showing against the Colts or Eagles. I don't expect us to be 3-0 at that point, but if we can contain Luck and the offensive mind of chip kelly we don't really face another top notch offense until arguably week 13 against the giants.
Revis is a known quantity... he won't put up gaudy stats, but that's because nobody will even throw at him. Cromartie is a place holder until Milliner can get his feet under him AND prove he deserves to be on the field. My guess is the FO wants Milliner to earn the starting job by the end of the year, but Cromartie will pose a stiff challenge in that regard. I'm pessimistic about Skrine. I'm sure he'll make plays that will woo us, and compared to Kyle Wilson he might look like Deion Sanders, but I'm expecting at least a couple of occasions where he gets torched and we're all sitting here wondering what the F? Very interested to see if Marcus Williams builds on last year's emergence and solidifies his spot as the back end of the rotation guy. I believe the team will keep another CB beyond Williams, but likely their role will consist of special teams, flex safety backup, and inactive list barring a lot of injuries.
I think we have the basic foundation for an elite D. If we can avoid major injuries, if Sheldon pulls his head out of his ass, and Mo quits worrying about his contract and focuses on the game, I think we quite possibly could be, and perhaps should be a top 3 defensive unit this season. Whether we will or not remains to be seen. In theory, we should continue to see sacks and pressures, but more importantly, should see more interceptions with the secondary we have. I think that's the key to becoming the #1 D. You have to create those TOs and get off the field on 3rd down. Those are the keys. Other than injuries and Sheldon's suspension, my only concerns/questions have to do with our LB corps. Harris is solid vs the run but can't cover and has little, if any speed. Davis has speed, but hasn't shown that he can cover much better than Harris. Both Pace and Babin are ancient. Will one or both still be on the team, and if so, will they be effective as anything other than coaches to help Reilly and Mauldin develop? Will Coples be able to step up his play and get more pressures and sacks and create some TOs? Will Mauldin develop and contribute much? The same question goes for Reilly. For us truly to have a dominant D, I think our LB corps has to step up and take their game to the next level. Even with one of the top 2-3 DLs in the game and perhaps the best secondary in the game, I don't think our D become truly dominant until we get better production/play out of our LBers. I'm not sure we have the talent and speed there yet that we need. Even if it all comes together this season, what will happen next season? Will Snacks be back? Cromartie? Davis? Wilk? Will Richardson be suspended for the whole season? It should be an interesting and exciting ride. I truly believe in Bowles, and I think no matter which of the above things happen, people will soon forget about Rex Ryan and his supposed "genius" as a DC.
I expect a lot more TOs than last year. the secondary will help the DL get more sacks, the DL will help the secondary pick off more balls. I can't wait to see it.
The Jets have had elite defensive talent at lest twice in the last fifteen years and maybe 3 times. 2004, 2009 and 2010. That was 10, 9 and 11 wins and the playoffs each time. Assuming the Jets can get a passable grade out of their QB's that's where we're headed again unless an injury wave does us in.
Hopefully one of the linebackers has a really good year - we need to force turnovers, something we haven't done well in sometime. I don't care about the rankings, I care about the TO differential and where we stand at the end of the season.
So do you expect us to keep 7 corners of McDougal to get cut? I agree in Marcus Williams should definitely make this team. He was probably our best back 4 player all year.
I'm really hopeful that Coples blows up this season. With our D-line giving every offense more than it can handle, and our secondary forcing the QB to hold on to the ball for an extra second-- I have to think he's too big and too atheletic for a HB or what passes for a modern day FB to block.
