**** Mods if you feel it belongs in the NFL section that is cool. I know it isn't Jets news however I think this contract can have implications for Revis.**** I bolded the part that would/should concern the Jets: Darnell Dockett gets four year extension Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 1, 2010 6:41 PM ET Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett is finally going to get paid. After years of pining for a new deal, a league source tells PFT's Mike Florio that the Cardinals and Dockett have agreed to a four-year contract extension. The deal will take him through 2015. Dockett is known well for his personality and his Twitter account, but he's also quietly developed into one of the most disruptive pass rushers in football the last few years. He's listed as a defensive tackle for Pro Bowl purposes, but usually lines up as an end in Arizona's unique 3-4 defense. He's just hitting his prime and has overcome an amazing amount to get to where he is. The team called a press conference, which will be streamed live online. It will provide a welcome dose of positive news during a drama-filled week for the organization. UPDATE: Here's video of the press conference. UPDATE II: PFT has confirmed Dockett received $30 million guaranteed for injury and $28 million for skill and injury. The total deal can be up to $48.5 million over four years. New money is $35.3 million over four years and with the escalators could be $40.3 million in new money. He'll make $4.55 million in 2010. In 2011, there is a $15 million option bonus, a $2.35 million salary, $250,000 workout bonus, and $500,000 in escalators. The rest of the years include the same workout bonus and escalators with the following base salaries: 2012: $3.4 million, 2013: $4.45 million, 2014: $5.5 million, 2015: $6.55 million. Dockett also can get a $2.5 million escalator in 2014 if he gets eight sacks in any one of his first four seasons.
Darnell gets $12+ mil a year. He is a DE though so not sure what types of implications this can have. Maybe it helps Revis gain some leverage since we are offering Revis $12mil a year and he wants more. Revis is worth more than a 29 years old DE, albeit an all pro.
A contract along these lines would be much more doable... I don't get way it's 10 year extension or nothing. Let's get Revis signed for the next 4-5 years...
the reality is, we as fans have no idea if it's a 10-year or nothing type scenario. The media blackout has been a few weeks now and we really don't have a damn clue what's going on.
Not really when you consider his remaining two years. It comes out to around 6 years for $56 million, which is only $9.33 million per year. But yeah, to answer the OP, hopefully the FO is more willing to guarantee more of the contract with this in consideration. That is IF that is the sticking point. $12 million/year should still be their total limit.
the most interesting part of that, in my opinion, is that it seems he got money guaranteed for skill & injury which we've been hearing it has to be one or the other. If my understanding has been correct, that has been one of the big sticking points with revis and the guaranteed money conundrum
Personally, I think the length of the contract he signs is a moot point. He has shown that he is extremely greedy by the way he handled his rookie deal and this situation. Therefore, if he signs a new deal that is ten years and he continues to play well he will just expect the Jets to rip that deal up also in a few years. I've gotten to the point that I think it will be funny if this guy loses out on over $12 mil this year, makes a lot of financial sense to me.
I think you're right. If I could handle the ramifications of tearing up Revis contract with 3 years to go I'd be looking to sign him for 4 years at the outside. That removes a lot of the incentive for him to hold out during the term of the contract, lowers the long-term cap effects pretty significantly, and allows the Jets some latitude in terms of getting out of the deal after a few years if they think Revis isn't worth it. The 10 year/Jet for life deals just look bad on the face of them unless the deal is so backloaded that the Jets can easily get out of the cap implications down the road. Revis won't (and shouldn't) sign that type of deal so there's really no win in looking there. If the Jets give him a "fair" long-term deal they're going to wind up taking all the risk in a sport where risks turn into reality every day.
the rules state that money guaranteed for skill and injury must fall under last years salary cap, we were only 300k under the salary cap ... the jets can only offer for skill or injury, the fully guaranteed money has to come from bonuses
While at the same time the Cardinals have a different 2009 cap number to fit guaranteed money under. That said, it sounds like an awful lot unless it includes a signing bonus.
