I'm all for taking an RT and letting Jones blossom at LT. However, if at # 4 Brick is the BPA and trading down is not ideal, we can do a helluva lot worse than taking the best Pass blocking prospect since Walter Jones.
great post, but the problem is will he lose that natural athleticism to defend a pass rush if he gains 15 to 25 pounds? he will have the technique, but is he going to be slower?
Please. I was asking a serious question because I don't see anything in Jones. If you want to be juvenile and "bring me to school" then so be it. I am interested in an intelligent debate, so I asked a serious question, if you can't handle that then don't reply to me. I beg to differ about the most consistent Olineman last year, Moore was IMO. What he has overcome makes no difference to me. If he learned so fast he would have been pushing his way into the starting line-up earlier, he did play in dead time and pre-season games, but he never showed me anything than being average at best. I am looking for long term answers to this team, and Jones has shown me nothing to suggest he is that long term answer. But with a potential pro-bowl LT on the table with Brick, the only reason not to take him, if available, is if you think Jones will be better than Brick. Ok, I just want to know what play, or stat, anything that you guys see in him that I don't? Because I watch the Lines, I think the battle in the trenches is the most important part of football. I watched him last year, his first opportunity to start, and I saw nothing to suggest that he is the long term answer. Especially nothing to suggest he will be better long term than Brick has the potential to be. I see all this Williams love fest, the bandwagon. I see thread after thread to try to downplay a draft pick that was rated in the top 4 the past 2 years. Frankly I have stated many times that I would be happy with Williams or Brick. But some people suggest that Williams is this sure thing, that will help the Jets immediately. That is just not true. He has just as much chance as busting as Brick, as all draft picks do. I am just trying to add the other side to this debate.
an OT is not a glamour pick. They personally don't have very attractive stats. I'm sure he would be a great pick, but if we get Pearson, we better go offense.
Another factor ... Start with a comparison. Is Mario Williams a good fit as a 3-4 DE. He is no SLAM DUNK prototype since he's not considered the clog-the-line body type like Kimo Von Ohlfen. This does not question his talent, but does he fit the Jets plans. Now in regard to D'Brick, he is a special player, a superior athlete at the Tackle position, hard to argue. But, how does he fit the Jets plans. Parcells liked to RUN ALOT, left and right. ALOT. What kind of offense is Shotty bringing here. If it's a run based attack, it does devalue D'brick to a degree. He is not considered better than average run blocker. All Off.Coordinators claim to run a "balanced attack", that is a load of poop. Also factor into the equation that come late November, cold weather teams tend to be more run-first.
I wouldn't be so quick to write Gallery off. Barry Sims has done a very good job at LT and last year's zone blocking experiment was a disaster. So far Gallery has started most of the games he has been with the Raiders. Now in his third year he will move to left tackle. Looks like a good building block to me.
Ok I know this is off topic, but I have some questions to you guys, at the end of the season everybody said that this was a three man draft, that we were screwed because we have the most ridiculous pick in the draft the #4, and now everybody is happy because there is D'Brick, Hawk and Mario, suddenly we are saved, but can these guys make up their mind? we are at number 4 and anyone in this draft can be a bust, what will decide if you become a star or become a bust is your will to work hard and the desire to perform as a star even after your first paycheck, I know there are guys who are very talented and they are naturally good but if they don't work hard they might become a bust too. I would like to put Cutler as an example, why so much hype about him, personally I would feel bad if we drafted him but there is so much talk about him because he showed that he is a hard working guy and he showed his desire to be a good player in this league, and what he showed in the combine and other events is what gave him a chance to be in the top ten. But the really meaning of this post is to ask you guys, why everyone wants Mario so badly, I know that he has showed a lot but don't we have Ellis and Kimo, I don't know exactly if Kimo is a DT or a DE but I wonder what are we going to do if Kimo and Ellis play both DE position is Mario going to play as a backup, or we will have him as a student trying to learn the 3-4 system, you know I was wondering that. Why do you want three good guys playing the same position when there is no one playing other positions well? I know you are going to say Ellis is not a superstar and Kimo is old and done but is Mario going to start over any of these guys? I really doubt it. We need starters, we still have some holes in starting positions.
No More Undersized O-lineman I agree with the post. D'Brick bulked up for the combine. 312 won't be his playing weight. I want a complete LT who can run block as well as pass block. If the rest of the guys were 330, I wouldn't mind Brick playing a 295. But most our OL is under 300. I just want to make a 3&1 for once!
He didnt bulk up for the combine. Hes been bulking up since his sophmore year in college. He started off i think around 260. Each year he managed to put on 15 lbs and maintain that through the season, so there goes the theory of him shrinking once he starts playing. By the end of his senior year he was around 295(give or take). Now hes around 315. Im confident he can maintain that as his playing weight. Hes been doing it for 2 seasons now(playing and bulking up with any loss in production).
You're right. He hasn't lived up to his potential yet, but it's not accurate to say he "did nothing" as a rookie. He started 15 games and let up 3 sacks. He handled Julius Peppers on the road, among others. He definitely took a step back with the rest of the O line in last year's "zone blocking" disaster, but we'll see what he can do at LT this year in a blocking scheme he's more comfortable in. As far as Brick is concerned, I think it's hard to criticize a team for taking the best tackle on the board in the top 5, especially when it's a need area. I'll just be curious to see which QB's are left when the Jets draft...
I can understand all the "instant impact' cries. But you honestly just need to step back ... and realize that patience is what is needed NOW. We have some good young players on the team ... now we need to build upon that. The best place to start building .... O-line. D'Brick can keep the QB blind side clear. The single most important aspect of any member of the O-line is simply that. Don't let them kill your QB. Will we ... or should we draft D'Brick? I will leave that to the Jets FO to decide. But they definitly need to consider it. I am sick of seeing our QB's running for their lives or getting murdered trying to get a pass off.
Come on man, how can you call him a bust? How is D"Brick "Clearley better" The last time I saw Gallery play, he was playing against NFL starting lineman. Brick hasnt even tasted that yet, so how can we make the compairison? I will say it again, IMO Brick does not have the MASS to 1) Move the pile and drive block 2) handel the bull rush from a power DE. He does have the ability to handel the DE with speed, rip and spin moves. The big question is, will he be able to add the mass before the season, and more importantly KEEP THAT WEIGHT ON during the season? I personally dont think he can, but I do think he will be very good in 2,3 or 4 seasons when he fully matures into his frame.:buffaloblows:
I love the fact that we as Jets fans are willing to throw a blind eye to the future and say we are rebuilding, and make it ok to lose. But do you rembember when we had one of the best lines....for years? It was us and the Colts with the fewest sacks allowed in the entire NFL for like 3 years in a row (2002-2005) Now we have 1 bad year last year, because of injury and not replacing McKenzie and we have the wors line in the history of the NFL...Come on man... As I explained in an early post in this thread...the reason why our qb's wer running for their lives was 3 fold. 1) Kendall is not a center he is a guard, Goodwin is really bad, Kevin went down, Jason went down. 2) Curtis went down, now we have a rookie picking up complex NFL Blitz packages 3) Everbody packed the line and blitzed after they found that out? I know we got old, FAST but we were not as bad as we looked, the combination of IR, no quality depth, and Rookies dont mesh well togther. We are doing what is right, and adding depth is the key.
