we drafted drob a few years back in order to be a pass rushing, 3 technique DT that could get to the QB.. i understand that it takes a few years in order to learn the proper mechanics and get use to NFL- quality offensive lineman.. however, my MAIN concern is that he is now out of place with the new regime taking over.. he was drafted for a cover 2 (tampa bay style defense) defensive scheme to play DT while next to the NT in the 4-3.. now that we are switching to a 3-4, there is discussion he will be used at DE since he cannot play the NT position (even tho he has the size, comparable to casey hamptom of the steelers) in the 3-4.. its such a waste because we are paying him like 1/10 of the team cap for a player who cannot be a dominant NT, and may be too big and slow to play DE.. drob was compared to being the next warren sapp but we saw how sapp fared as a DE.. not very good.. now we are screwed with his situation because we cannot cut him because the cap penalty would be enormous and we are paying a player oodles of money who is not a playmaker.. you have to realize that drob is like top 5 money making d-lineman in the whole NFL and he hasnt shown anything that merits that kind of money.. its ridiculous how bradway reached so far on this workout warrior (2 1st rounders) in the draft and then basically gave him 51% of the stock for the jets organization.. like what did he say to drob? "you have yet to play a down in the NFL, you are suppose to be the next sapp, lets give you the most lucrative deal to a dlineman ever" 54 mill for 6 years is ridiculous..
There's nothing new on the Obvious situation.... You'll just have to wait till the staff finds a role for him and I look at it as a 1 year try out afterwhich he could be gone.
a bad decision thats for sure, but he's on our team and we have to use him somehow. He still has superior talent for his size, we just need coach him well/put him in a place where he can contribute. Expecting him to turn into a sack monster like sapp is long gone though. NT's rarely get the opportunity since they're usually occupying blockers.
drob prob wont be successful as a DE.. he hasnt shown any ability to get sacks or even get constant pressure on the QB.. he also hasnt shown he can play NT well.. and 54 mil to occupy blockers?? i wont be happy with him at NT just occupying blockers.. u dont draft someone #4th overall to do that.. what a waste..
One thing he needs to do is lay off the fried chicken and mashed potatoes at TC. Last year's Camp was a joke.
Well this staff didn't draft him, so it's technically a wash. A new regime has no responsibility to resume the work of previous ones. (If the previous staff had done things right, there would be no reason for a new one.) Yeah so he is overpaid. If he doesn't earn some of that money this year, I fully expect Tanny to make an ultimatum to him. Fix it, or we will. But we are jumping ahead of ourselves also. We currently have three guys who can play DT. Titus' big positive is that he is a very good 3-4 NT. His big downside is that he can't play more than a few downs in a row. He needs to rest, to be at full strength all game. I'm expecting a NT by committee to emerge. DRob, Pouha and Titus will revolve, and it may just be a blessing. Imagine a full strength DRob in the 4th quarter! Keep in mind, Monday morning naps are done with the new CS. Drob's knee condition will be helped out by the committee revolutions. I am far more confident in the DT position than I was before Draft Sunday.
DRob was highly touted after the season started as a man that other teams had to deal with. I believe that Cowher said "he's just an animal, and has great push" but this was before last season started. Prior to the start of last season, DRob wanted his knee checked out. He has pain, and is unable to get that "first-step" push that gave him defensive power. After seeing doctors (and this was his second opinion) they said it didn't need to bo operated on. I think pschologically DRob wants the surgery, and considers his knee to soft to operate at full speed. just my opinion...
robertson played some NT at Kentucky. he had like 10 more LBS on him i believe. i think he could be good at NT. he has the explosion at the point of attack as a "pass rushing DT" all he would have to do is engage and hold his lane. i wouldnt write him off, but i do understand the skeptics. worst case scenario we give him a shot at DE, but I know he could be successful if we had a worthy rotation. i dont know, robertson has a good blend of size/speed so i think Mangini can find a way to scheme his effectiveness
although he was drafted to be a playmaking 3 shade dt, he has played like a NT, which is why I think he'll be fine..... i've said this alot, but think back to our great run defense of 04....robertson wasn't making that many plays alone, but he was tying up 2 blockers on most plays, and holding his ground and/or penetrating.....letting vilma and hobson make plays.....he'll be fine
like everyhitng, this is all specualtion, but I think Drob was more miscast as a 3-technique than as a NT. I think he'll be perfect... just like Casey Hampton.
This is a great post. Everyone has gotten on me for being a "D rob lover" or however it has been termed. But the whole time the only point I have been trying to get across is that 2 years ago everyone had the guy's jock. There were very few if any Jet fans who didnt believe that D rob was one of our team's best players and was one of the main reasons for our D's success. Here we are a year removed from that, when our entire TEAM had a down year, and suddenly the guy is an overpaid "waste". How bipolar are Jet fans? The fact is, the guy is extremely talented and only going into his 4th season. Has he been inconsistent? Absolutely. But he's also started the majority of the games he has played for this team and filled what was a major hole at DT.Remember Shane Burton? Ernie Logan? Tom Barndt? He may not be the "Sapp clone" he was hyped to be, but he has solidified a long time problem position for this team. Any time you can fill a hole like that, you cant really complain too much. As for his role on this years team: Time and time again I have explained that we will not be playing a pure 3-4 scheme nor a pure 4-3 scheme. We will be playing a hybrid system that creates mismatches for the opposition. W/ a player like D rob who has rare strength and speed for his size, he will surely be a fixture for alot of our defensive plays. Everyone thinks that D rob maybe the odd man out..but truthfully I think it's the opposite. He's the only guy we have upfront who can truly create mismatches for an OL..and I fully expect the CS to take advantage of that notion.
give D-Rob a chance to learn and work into the system, too early to give up on him, especially with all the money that is invested into the guy
Hopefully he can be a Casey Hampton type player, probably even better cause he got pass-rushing ability.I love D-Rob but looking at this just got me pissed. Round 1 Sel# Team Player Pos. Some great opinions here guys. I personally think that D'Robs contribution has been greatly underestimated by some during the past two years. When he first came to the NFL it was accepted that he would take some time to find his feet. By the end of that first season (Chad had missed a chunk because of that broken wrist), we were beginning to see the penetration he showed with the wildcats and was nearly always double teamed at scrimmage, the fact we couldn't take more advantage of it wasn't his fault. It became clear he was carrying that damn knee injury in his second season and it never had a chance to heal, that is some frame to be bolstered by 1 and a 1/2 knees, he had lost a step no doubts and we could see that his conditioning could have been better as he fatigued in 4th quarters. I do agree he is being paid a hellava salary but he is still a class player and like many have said in this theread he will blossom in the new hybryd schemes a tactician like Mangini is preparing.
coulda shoulda woulda when we picked drob i thought it was a great pick, sometimes things just don't work out
I was on record (through email and talking to people) back then as saying that Boldin would be a major player in the NFL. I was annoyed when the Jets didn't take him at 53. Johnson is nothing but hindsight now. The Jets had Martin and LaMont Jordan. If the Jets did not make the trade with the Bears, they still would not have drafted Johnson. That would have been too much salary at the running back position.
Who said we are solely playing the 3-4 anyway? Iif anyone actually has watched the Pats, they use multiple fronts and move guys all over the place. He may be overpaid a bit (thats because he was a high pick), but it doesn't make him useless. The first post is kind of odd, because he didn't reach that much on Robertson, and around that time is when DT's were all going high (until as people noticed an enormous amount of them were not worth it....jonathan sullivan anyone? there are countless others too). Secondly, if you knew the NFL's Draft semantics you would understand why he has the contract he does. Also, whoever said Titus (06 7th rounder) could play NT is off base, he's an UT for the most part in a 4-3 (4-4, etc) and he's a DE in the 3-4 front.
It was me. You know, I went to NFL.com to get the text of where I first saw the information I posted earlier, and guess what? It's changed! It says what you just posted now, but I swear, I read what I wrote there on draft day. If you view the draft thread (second one), you will even see how I talked about it. My apologies. I wasn't trying to post misinformation. I didn't know squat about the guy before we picked him. I was going solely on the information given about him right after the pick. NFL.com touted him as a great 3-4 NT, but that he was going to have durability problems.
