Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I was just looking through past heisman winner and I don't think the Jets have ever drafted a heisman trophy winner, I was just wondering if anyone else realized this and can confirm it. Also Jason White the QB from Oklahoma won it back to back. What happened to him why wasnt he heavily recruited or made some waves in the NFL?
Yes...the Jets drafted John Huarte, Notre Dame, the 1965 Heisman Trophy winner in the second round. They drafted a guy named Joe Namath in the first round.
I wasn't around them but I think it had something to do w/ some doubt as to whether namath would sign w/ the Jets or play in the NFL- he was also drafted the cards in the NFL. I think the only Heisman winning player to ever actually play for the Jets was Vinny.
Namath stunned the sports world by taking jet money and opting for the JV afc. This was the first time the afc got any respect. The second time came at the end of the '69 SB.
I think I read that they were nervous about Namath's health (his knees) so they got an "insurance policy" in the next round.... Hell of an insurance policy...
The mere fact that a Heisman Trophy winning QB from Notre Dame was available in the second round tells you all you need to know about Mr. Huarte, who never took a snap for the Jets, and appeared in 24 games over 6 years in the NFL, throwing a grand total of 48 passes (completing 19, with 5 INTs and 1 TD).
he did NOT win it back to back...he finished 3rd the next year he had knee problems..major surgery in 01/02 and then quit the titans in 05 with a knee injury...
 That's the AFL not the AFC. The AFC didn't existed until '70. American Football League American Football Conference
You're right of course. At that time the AFL was a joke, kind of like the XFL from a few years ago. Imagin if Manning signed with the XFL, and then beat the Bears in the SB as a 17pt dog. It was that kind of moment.
when I saw this thread, i thought of Anthony Davis RB out of USC, but "after further review" he finished second in 74 Heisman vote.
