3 straight busts, not in the first round but we missed on every single pick except Dwight Lowery who we traded away 2008 1 6 Vernon Gholston LB Ohio State 1 30 Dustin Keller TE Purdue 4 113 Dwight Lowery CB San Jose State- Only hit 5 162 Erik Ainge QB Tennessee 6 171 Marcus Henry WR Kansas 7 211 Nate Garner T Arkansas 2009 1 5 Mark Sanchez QB USC- still with team 3 65 Shonn Greene RB Iowa 6 193 Matt Slauson G Nebraska 2010 1 29 Kyle Wilson CB Boise State- still with team 2 61 Vladimir Ducasse T Massachusetts- still with team 4 112 Joe McKnight RB USC 5 139 John Conner RB Kentucky When I look at our failures in 2011 and 2012, I see this being the main reason why with the vets stepping down and having no youth to step in and take over in roles we needed them in, couple that with Pettine running the Defense(you see the difference between a Rex called game and a Pettine called game) I just can see how you miss on 3 straight drafts However the last 3 have been a step forward 2011 1 30 Muhammad Wilkerson DT Temple 3 94 Kenrick Ellis DT Hampton 4 126 Bilal Powell RB Louisville 5 153 Jeremy Kerley WR Texas Christian 2012 1 16 Quinton Coples DE North Carolina 2 43 Stephen Hill WR Georgia Tech 3 77 Demario Davis LB Arkansas State 6 187 Josh Bush DB Wake Forest 7 242 Antonio Allen SS South Carolina Hopefully the young guys from this class add to our core
Yall act like Dustin Keller, Shonn Greene, etc and other contributors did nothing for us. We went to two straight afc championship games and Dustin, Greene, Kyle, Mark, and others helped us get us there. AND YOUR A ***EDIT*** Wasn't Joe a pro bowler? How can you say he's a miss just because he isn't on the team now
None of those guys other than Keller were long term contributors. For as much impact or"part of the run" that guys like Greene and Sanchez were- they're not here/not playing anymore with the team The 08,09,2010 drafts were a big reason this team struggled in 2011 and stunk in 2012. Wilkerson, Coples, Kerley, Davis, Richardson all look to be sure fire long term contributors to the team. Wilkerson and Richardson look to be stars.
The only true "bust" on that list is Gholston. Every other 1-4 round pick contributed in some meaningful way and saying a 5th or higher pick is a bust is simply non-sense. _
Agreed. "Bust" is a term not to be used lightly. It means high expectations/draft pick used/money spent & little to no contributions what so ever. Gholston fits that mold. Some of those other names, although disappointing aren't colossal failures by any stretch,
They're not colossal failures, but they werent long term cornerstone guys either. Those drafts put us in the shitter for 11/12. Luckily we drafted well those years and have building blocks. The key to this league is refilling via the draft. Look at the Steelers right now. That's what consecutive poor drafts gets you. The Giants too.
Yeah, getting drafted 6th overall and never recording a sack or a forced fumble in 3 years clearly reaches "bust" level. But that wasn't really the Jets fault, they had the 6th pick in a 5 player draft. Keller, before his injury season last year was consistently never ranked lower than 17 on the receptions list for TEs and was as high as 9th and 11th (mind you, I'm talking regular season--his catches and TDs in the playoffs don't count). McKnight, for as much as everyone hates the guy did make the Pro Bowl as a returner-twice I think. Shonn Greene, as much as everyone hates the guy was a productive back for us. As much as everyone hates Wilson, he's seemed to have stuck around and started a few games. And Sanchez, well, we KNOW how much everyone hates the guy but he accounted for 80 TDs (not counting playoffs because the NFL doesn't acknowledge them) so while he's been a disappointment, he's not a bust. And Vlad Ducasse may be our starting guaurd for the next 10 years. None of them "busts" even though some serious disappointment. _
Keep in mind that we traded multiple picks for Braylon, Jenks, Cro, Holmes and others who I can't remember. While we can argue about whether that strategy was a good one, those guys did contribute to our past success.
going to disagree a little bit here. In the 2008 draft class Keller was anything but a bust. He was in the top half of TE's in every season he played more than 10 games in terms of receptions, yards and Yards per catch, despite 3 of his healthy seasons being with one of the leagues worst QB's. Not a superstar But definitely not a bust either. Sanchez is pretty much a bust, at least for a first rounder. Shonn Greene however again not a superstar but far from a bust, busts don't run for 1,000 two times and average 4.2 yards per carry over their career. Again, not a superstar but definitely not a bust, especially for a 3rd rounder. Matt Slauson, again not a bust, but a 7th round pick who started for the Jets and was signed to start on the O-line for the Bears.....Far better than 99.9% of 7th round picks...definitely not a superstar but not a swing and a miss either. Vlad and Wilson, both are entering their 4th seasons, both have dramatically underachieved and both of these are bordering on bust status.
Your catching on, but for a top 5 pick you are correct he accounted for 80 TD's, he also accounted for 88 Turnovers and a paltry 55.1% completion rate. And it is okay to include post season stats in career stats AS LONG AS YOU STATE POST SEASON INCLUDED. The stats do exist, but they are separate from career stats.
I'm not calling each player a bust, I'm talking the draft classes in general we essentially have no one left on the team from those classes and the only ones left are either committing multiple penalties, cant cover or injuried Keller was good but was he worth the first round pick, we traded up with Green Bay to get him, they later took Jordy Nelson with the pick again not calling each player a bust but we essentially missed on every pick, in the span of 3 drafts you hope to get 1 or 2 guys to stick long term out of your 5,6,7 round picks
Keller, Greene, and Slauson all made contributions. Sanchez....ehhh. Some people would say he contributed, some would probably say he held us back. Wilson even contributes. He has his moments, although looking back he definitely shouldnt have been picked in the first round. But it's hard to play the what if game. But those drafts were definitely weak when you compare them to the ones directly before and directly after. I wouldn't call them total failure though. However being able to draft guys like Wilkerson, Coples, Davis, Ellis, Richardson, and Milliner (who I hope we are talking about positively in a couple of weeks) has been huge for us.
You throw out the two picks that were taken by the head coach against the wishes of the Jets scouts, Sanchez and Ghoulston, and all 5 drafts are excellent draft. Put Keller with a top 30 NFL QB and his production would have been much better. Put him with a guy like Manning or Brady and he could have been a beast. Wilson may not be a great pick but for where he was taken he has contributed and done well and was a solid pick. Late 1st round picks do not have a very good success rate. Look at those drafts. Actually look at all the drafts since 2000 and we have had some excellent and amazing drafts.
Keller was a decent player, but definitely NOT worth trading back into the 1st rd for. That draft SUCKED! I knew Gholston was no good long before the draft..... I remember that day my girlfriend came home from work (or wherever she was) and asked "how'd the JETS make out, did they get some good players?" "I don't want to talk about it..... wanna beer?"
No doubt, if only Jenkins was able to stay healthy.... at least we have big snacks now, who being an UDFA has been a big reason the Jets have surprised many people thus far into the season.
Yeah, I wasn't thrilled with that pick at the time but if you recall, we were rumored to be looking at the 3 big tall WRs in that draft and they were all still on the board --James Hardy, Malcolm Kelly and Limas Sweed and not one of them had any impact in the NFL. Turned out Keller was a pretty productive Jet and gave us some great moments. _
