I've been doing a lot of reading lately, and wanted to post this at the right time... I'm a Mangini supporter, and just have to wonder WHY all this "fire" him talk is occurring. A little over a year and a half ago when the coach search began for the Jets, the leading guys were Eric Mangini, Mike Tice, Jim Haslett, and some others. We ALL wanted Mangini because we wanted the Jets to make a splash, for better or for worse, but just take a risk with such a young tandem of Mangini and Tannenbaum. Mangini intrigued us, with his youth and coaching tree that he is coming from. So, thankfully, Woody and Tanny decided to take a risk and hire the then 34 year old head coach. We were in most agreement that this will be a building process, maybe be a playoff team in 08', but for sure in 09'. Mangini made the playoffs in his 1st season and I still wonder how such an average team on both sides of the ball made it. To me it was great coaching, advance gameplans, and lots of risky calls. Now fast forward to this season and the Jets are doing what most of us expected last season. But don't some teams take 2 steps back before they take that big leap forward? The overachieved last season, and underachieved this season. Yet some of you just want to get rid of him now for having a bad year, and yes some very questionable decisions, understandable. But I still am behind him and this regime, this is only YEAR 2 of a REBUILDING process, where is the patience that was willing to be given by Jets fans when Mangini was hired? Did 1 playoff season just make you forget about all of that and expect to be a perennial playoff team? Please. He will be entering Year 3 of his tenure with a playoff season under his belt and yet another important draft upcoming, yet some of us just want to fire him and wish that pipe-dream of Bill Cowher coaching this team, gimmie a break. He's the coach I want for this team. He still hasn't molded the team he has wanted, and Year 3 I expect some much improvement with some pieces in place to be a solid team. Their drafts, the good outweighs the bad...But this is a very important offseason. Let's see what Year 3 brings us. Until then, enough of this "Fire Mangini" talk. It makes you sound moronic.
The best post I have seen around this joint for a long time and I completely agree. Its hard making chicken salad out of chicken shit..............
if you need to fire your coach after only 2 seasons (or less), there is a bigger problem ... that your front office can't hire the right guy i would be pretty upset if mangini got fired
I agree. Some people are idiots. This guy is a young coach, he has a great road map and is SMART. He is SMARTER than 90% of the coaches in this league. Meaning he is able to innovate and change and make decisions on his feet. People complain about decisions he has made when this team has a real severe lack of talent across the board and an inability to execute. If you cant carry out the plan of course the plan will look stupid. Mangini's only real error in my eyes was downplaying this team's need for talent in the offseason (kendall) etc. But he is building so we can DOMINATE for 3/4 years like the pats did, not wasting cap space so we can be mildly competitive for a few years. I mean what did people here expect to win 12 games this year? We had a terribly easy schedule last year, a gameplan on both sides that had not been yet seen and some good luck. I wish people would just calm the hell down and let the coaching staff do their thing because I have a lot of confidence that they will bring us there soon. Just relax.
Look at every dominant team in the history of the NFL and you will find one thing: A consistent coaching staff. You obviously need smart guys running the show. But you have to give them time to develop the team and build it to their vision. Imagine what might have happened if the Browns were a little more patient with Belechick.
Hey guys Belicheat started 5-11 his first season as a a coach for the Pats you have to give tangini time... I'm sure if we had a great pass rusher and a decent left guard and right tackle the outcome would have been much different against the Pats. Brady was shitting on his pants in the 4th quarter of the game I think we had an excellent game plan against the Pats we held Brady to no td's I know noboy likes moral victories but lets give tangini time...
Mangini is still the guy for this team. If a couple minor things go differently for the Jets this year they could be an 8-6 team. Honestly are the Titans really 5 games better than the Jets. No, in the NFL today with the exception of a few elite teams most teams can go either way every year. That's why there is at least one surprise team every year in the league. If you look at the young players Mangini is bringing he is doing a good job. In the last two drafts he has brought in Revis, Harris, Washington, D'Brick, and Mangold. Just think that in the entire Herm/Bradway era the only Pro bowler they brought in was Ty Law. And for all this talk about Bill Cowher he is one of the most overrated coaches of all time. I would take Mangini over him everyday of the week. Everyone just wants to talk about how great a coach he was but they forget that he lost 4 AFC championships at home before winning the super bowl. A great coach would not lose 4 championship games at home.
Have you watched any of the games this season? Have you watched how many stupid decisions this guy makes over and over. How much more do we have to watch? I'm sick of his arrogant, cocky attitude, how can you defend Mangini when he's on the sideline at the end of games smiling with that stupid smirk while we watch our team lose yet another game. His handling of Chad Pennington was horrible in so many ways, how the heck do you continue to let Chad call stupid timeout after stupid timeout (again yesterday). Roger Staubach was not allowed to call timesouts when he was playinig, Tom Landry made that a rule. I’m sick and tired of the way he talks to the media and how he keeps all the injuries so secret, Vilma is a prime example. He has done nothing in this league, yet he is so arrogant, I’m sick of him and he is not going to last in New York.
One of Mangini's biggest short comings is his inability to make changes on the fly. Too many times this season we've been in the game only to fold in the second half. Like last season, this team has played better (for the most part) after the break. Why is that? If Mangini is so innovative and smarter then 90% of the coaches in the league, why do his game plans fail in the second half and why does it take until the bye to make major adjustments? Sure things take time to get into place, but when things were going as wrong as they were so early in the season, why wait? Make changes and see what happens. No question this team has some personnel issues. I won't even mention what they are because there brought up in different threads everyday, but as you mentioned it turned out to be grossly mishandled going into this season. Aside of not bringing in much talent, it took them a long time to ink Revis and we've all bared witness to the end result of shipping out Pete Kendal (which I certainly wasn't opposed to, but I'm not responsible for making sure the team functions properly). Perhaps these are all growing pains and with more talent that fits his scheme, things will work out for the better. Here's hoping, because another new coach will set things back even further. All the same though, whether you think he should be fired or he should be given an extension, he, like everyone else, is not above criticism...especially from the fans that support the team. Somebody not being totally sold on the guy doesn't make them an idiot, nowhere near it...just skeptical. If you choose to hold that against them given the history of this franchise then you probably haven't been around that long.
Yea but...we're not Super Bowl winners, or even CONTENDERS under him yet. The guy just isn't cutting it right now.
There was a time when Belichick wasn't cutting it in new england..[2000, 5-11] and people in boston wanted him ousted before Mo Lewis spring started Brady's career in 2001. Not saying that Mangini is going to be our savior, but we need to give him the chance... Just gotta be patient. Coaches are typically allowed 3 seasons so they can bring in their personnel.
Canyou imagine if every time a coach had a bad year he was fired? Bill Cowher would have been fired 5 times. Jimmy Johnson would have been fired before the cowboys got good. Bellicheat would have been fired before Brady got to play. You have to give a coach plenty of time. The only reason you fire a coach early is if he loses the team.
I have been a Mangini supporter - and loved what I saw of him in year #1. To be quite honest his decision making (in concert with Tannenbaum) in the offseason - in training camp - and now in game situations - has been very dissapointing. That said - the guy is very young and very talented - smart - and has tried some things that have not worked out. We need to give him a chance to see if he will LEARN from his mistakes, or if he will make them over and over... ...the issue I had with Herm Edwards was he never seemed to learn, to change, to improve - and his mistakes were repeated over and again. Every coach - especially one who has no previous HC experience - needs the chance to either learn or sink. That is why "Fire Mangini" makes absolutely no sense at this stage. I will say that what we need to look at is how he takes this season - and what he does with it? Does he learn from his mistakes or continue down the same path? What he's lost is the fudge factor - no more excuses - as we said in year 3 of Herm's regime. Not that Mangini is big on excuses - but to be fair - 2008 for Mangini is the "no more excuses" season.
As disgusted as I am with this franchise right now, I will say this much...IF the Jets become a good team, I want them to be good for a LONG time - not just for 1 or 2 seasons. If that means waiting a few more seasons for them to build the kind of core that leads to a perennial playoff team, so be it.
Mangini and Tannenbaum the the guys we want..There smart , work hard, and do their homework..They have brought in some unbelievable draft talent the last two years and are building a team for the future..Turning over a roster and getting rid of big salaries in the NFL is something you can't do in quick fashion because of salary cap hits and so on. This guy is n excellent young coach and MT is a smart GM..If we EVER fired these guys after 2 years we would be the LAUGHING STOCK of the NFL..think about it.
I agree...I support Mangini, however I do think he needs to change his staff with real coordinator's with experience. I really think the guy can coach, also it seems like players have bought into him and his system. He has some questionable games....but what coach hasn't. This offseason will be huge for this regime, to see where we are headed.
Yeah because in 2 seasons we should just be an elite team. Since when do Jets fans have this spoiled attitude of expecting to win and be contenders? Did that 98' under Parcells really change your look on how bad this franchise has been? One great season under Parcells and you expected to be "Super Bowl winner" in just 2 seasons? How long do you think it takes to build a team? Especially taking over a team that finished 4-12. I give you more credit than that comment DWare...
He looks like he is in way over his head. He makes no adjustments, and has no track record to make you believe he will a good NFL head coach. His claim to fame was getting people coffee.
