Coaches rankings: Redskins stockpiling talent Michael David Smith / FootballOutsiders.com Posted: 22 hours ago We here at Football Outsiders have finished our rankings of each unit in the National Football League, but we're not done yet. We'll now examine the coaching staffs, analyzing which head coaches do the best jobs running their teams, and which assistants do the best with their individual units. Note: Some of the statistics referenced in this article come from the Football Outsiders game charting project, coordinated by Bill Moore. If you are looking to find out how often all 32 teams ran with a fullback, lined up in a four-wide set or ran on first down, all that information can be found in our new book Pro Football Prospectus 2006. ~ ~ ~ 21. New York Jets Eric Mangini made headlines when he became the youngest head coach in the NFL. Mangini and defensive coordinator Bob Sutton have a big job ahead of them, transforming the Jets' defense into a 3-4 even though most of the players were acquired with a 4-3 defense in mind. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is known as a disciple of his father, Marty, but don't forget where he played college ball. Schottenheimer was a backup quarterback at Florida, where he learned from Steve Spurrier, and he is expected to run a system that, like Spurrier's, changes more from week to week than most NFL offenses do. The system will require a smart quarterback who can adjust to such alternating game plans, which means if rookie Kellen Clemens wins the job at some point this season, he'll need to be a fast learner. Offensive line coach Tony Wise was one of Jimmy Johnson's first hires in Dallas and helped shape the great Cowboys line of the 1990s. He should be a great fit for a team that drafted two offensive linemen in the first round this year. > http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5896698
We're not the worst! We're not the worst! That bit on Schottenheimer is pretty interesting. I don't know how much I take from it -- the guy has still spent a lot more time around his dad than Spurrier -- but it's something that I'd never heard before.
did ya see ? ? : - - " 28. Kansas City New head coach Herm Edwards is coming off a 4-12 season, and it's baffling that the Chiefs were willing to give up a fourth-round draft pick to acquire him. . . "
You have heard that normally apples do not fall far from the trees? I know if I was the HC & had the authority to make such a decision anybody with the last name Shotty would be immediately disnissed for consideration from the position.
I'm amazed we're rated so high lol. Unproven guys as far as the eye can see, it really says something about the rest of the league if we're almost top 20 before this season.
Sorry if the truth hurts but that is the realty of the situation that not only me but others have posted. You can thank Woody actually for putting us in this situation cause he hired Dumbway & probably also approved of Herm
