Agree with pretty much all of this. There was definitely a terrible stretch of first rounders and that lead to this downfall. As of now there's a stretch of Wilkerson, Coples, Milliner, and Richardson. It's pretty early but it looks like we hit home runs on at least 3 of those 4 picks. Feeling good about the future, I don't care about these stupid predictions.
Well the Jets piece is written by Herman Edwards. Which would probably explain a lot. I mean yea they may not be very good this year but they will have 8 draft picks and 3 or 4 compensation picks and quite a bit of cap space. That should set up well for a team that needs depth. If Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez can be decent this year they will be better than the 32nd team in the league.
It seems like every year we are rated high we tumble down the rankings, every year we're in the back 10 we drive to the top 10. These rankings mean nothing. It's almost like a 12 year old picks his favorite teams and just throws them up there.
We made improvements at CB and DL but took a HUGE hit at Safety. Consider we did not have MEvi$ last year, trading him did not hurt us from last year accomplishments with our defense. Letting Bell leave when we could have signed him for Vet minimum was crazy. Trading a younger brother who is a probowler for an older one who isn't was just about money, but hurt the defense a lot. With all the draft picks invested in the DL you would think they could actually get a sack or stop a running back, so far they haven't done either. So we invest another 1st round pick and restore hope for another year.
Looking years down the road is silly in this era. Things change so quickly in this league both good and bad. Teams we think will be good for a while can end up bad quickly(see us), teams we think will stink for a while can end up good quickly(see NE 2001).
Instead of taking Richardson at 13 we should have taken Kenny Vaccaro. That would have been a serious upgrade at Safety. Have Vaccaro and Landry out there all while training Bush to take over for Landry in a few years. The defensive line could have held its own without Richardson. That was a luxury pick. We had way more pressing needs at the safety position and I really do not know what the front office was thinking. They will be kicking themselves if we are constantly getting beat over the top this year.. Maybe they know something we don't and have serious confidence in Bush/Allen. We shall see.
Yeah I agree. The recent 1st rounders are looking good, the only problem is we haven't drafted a first round offensive talent since 2009. Next year's draft will be chock full of offensive players, however, so I think we'll pick mostly offense with the exception possibly being safety or OLB.
He knows how to run an overall defense without a good center fielder, but whenever the Jets lose against the teams with good offenses, it tends to start with the lack of a good center fielder. He can only disguise that weakness so much.
Yea the Jets haven't had a good center fielder in a long time. I was under the assumption that that was why they drafted Josh Bush. Would be nice if DT and Rex can develop one of the late round safeties into something competent.
if our d-line is as great as it could be, it will take a lot of pressure off the safeties and they will be serviceable enough
The idea of doing power ratings for 3 seasons out is pretty silly. It gets sillier still when the 2013 pre-season power rankings are off kilter the way they are. The Jets aren't a particularly good team right now. They're definitely in the bottom half of the league and might well be midway through the bottom third overall. However the idea that a team that is likely to have a top 10 defense is going to rank dead last next year is just ludicrous. That doesn't happen very often, if ever. Last year the fewest wins by a team in the top 10 defensively in terms of yards allowed was the Jets who won 6 games. Several other teams in the top 10 won 7 or 8 games. In 2011 the Jaguars and the Browns won 5 and 4 games respectively while turning in top 10 defensive performances. You just don't get the worst record if your defense is good enough to rank in the top 10. You play too many teams over the course of the year who have a weak offense and get shut down by your defense and default you to a win. Next year the Jets play 9 games against teams that finished 18th or lower in total offense for 2012. Even if a few of them dramatically improve the odds are pretty good one or more of the teams in the top 17 that the Jets play will decline on offense. So you're talking probably 6 to 8 games minimum against weak to middling offenses next year. The Jets are going to win 3 or 4 of those games because their defense is going to keep the other team down. The floor for the Jets next year is 4 or 5 wins and that assumes they don't get a bit lucky somewhere along the way. That's not 32nd ranking territory. None of the guys who voted them there were thinking about the reality of a Rex Ryan defense when they cast the vote. Ryan defenses have been bailing out bad QB's for years now and none of the teams he's coached on have won less than 5 games. next year is not likely to break that run.
The whole concept behind this article is incredibly stupid, projecting that many years down the road for an entire organization from top to bottom. Just ESPN trying to put out more of their crappy content.
Yea the concept is very stupid. Go back 3 seasons. The Jets had Mark Sanchez just lead them to the AFC Championship game, and had just traded for Cromartie and Holmes. Three years ago nobody in their right mind thinks Manning is on any team other than the Colts. Three years ago who the hell is RGIII, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson? Such a dumb article. And if you don't think ESPN put the Jets last so people would click the article, you are mistaken. Three years from now will Manning and Brady even be playing anymore?
