Dont bash me on this one guys cause i feel this is of great importance, Field Position is a key component for a ground and pound/ solid defensive team like us, There is definitely a great need for a new punter on this squad for 2010, Weatherford was decent but we NEED consistency. Here are some punters who may be able to help us next season-
I don't think Weatherford needs to be replaced. He only averaged under 40 Y/P in two games during the regular season and he's a great weapon for fakes.
True I did forget how much success weatherford had on fakes last year. Then again I think with a team like the jets who is strong defense / bleh on offense a punter with some good range/directional kicking could be incredibly important
In all seriousness I trust Westoff. If we need a new punter he will get one and if he thinks Weatherford can get better then so be it. I still think it would be awesome to get Zoltan tho.
His average AND net put him at #26 out of 32. We could do better, and should. A defensive team needs a quality punter, and Steve-o isn't it. ...and fakes aren't necessary when your team is dominant. That really shouldn't even be a factor, all things considered.
I like Weatherford as our punter, it's nice having someone who can run because teams have to guard it, and even if they only have one guy watching "Wheels" that's one less guy blocking for the return man
Show me a GM who chooses kickers because they can tackle and punters because they can run and I'll show you a dude who won't have a job in a year. #26...of 32! Punter's job is to pizza, dumbasses.
We need to tryout a few guys this offseason. I say go for the undrafted guys and try to find something new. It would be damn nice to have a guy that can kick 48-50 yarders consistently with hangtime. I see it as a worst comes to worst we just go back to weatherford.
Matt Dodge, Zoltan Mesko, Jeremy Boone. Some of the great punters in the draft..I'd take Zoltan just because of his name
The former stat is situational (I'd like to see what his average punt distance was depending on where we were on the field), and the latter wasn't helped by our coverage unit which had a less than stellar year.
Weatherford wasn't terrible but there are better punters out there. On the other hand if the offense scores on every play then we don't need a punter.
From what I remember, he had ample opportunity to punt with an open field. Our coverage units definitely didn't play up to par this year though.
