You old timers know I love looking back at the draft - and since we've hit the 1/3rd mark of the season, I thought it was time to do some review.

-Looking at Reggie Bush, you wonder if the Jets should have made the move up to get him? I still say you have to build the lines and core...so I'm glad we passed...but he looks so damn good!

-Leinart is doing well, but people still talk about Cutler as being potentially better. For my taste, I'd have skipped the QB all together this draft and concentrated elsewhere and gotten my QB next year - the draft is full of them. If I'd have gone for Clemens in round 2, I'd have traded for Cutler instead in round 1.

OK - my revisions at the 1/3rd point

1(12) trade down and not pick D'Brick and instead trade for Haloti Ngata...and pick up and extra #2 from Cleveland. Those who remember I was high on Ngata all along...

1(29) Mangold was the perfect pick, and I like his upside so far...

    2(34)
2(35) trading down with Cleveland we get back to back picks, and we could have taken both an LT and RT in Winston Justice and Marcus McNeil. Justice is a reserve in Philly because he plays behind Thomas, but he'll push for playing time. McNeil is already starting in San Diego and a boon to their already good running game. I say part of our problem running is not having a road grader RT and McNeil is just the ticket.

3(71) remember, now we are holding on to our picks, no more messing around...so at 71 I take the TE Leonard Pope - a big blocking TE we miss for our running game. Now we have our starting NT for the 3-4, two big strong rookie Tackles and a Center, and a big blocking rookie TE...

3(97) this was a compensatory pick, and Max Jean Gilles is the guard we needed to be a road grader. Now we've put 4 rookies on the line who are big strong and powerful, along with a huge blocking TE. Even if Pennington is playing behind rookies, at least they are big and can move people. A running game would help us all...

4(103) how can you possibly question the Brad Smith pick at this point? He's been so fun to watch - great pick!

4(117) isn't it fun watching Leon Washington run with the pick we got for Herm Edwards. Now imagine the little (short) guy behind that huge offensive line?

5(138) Jonathan Scott might have been a #1 pick at OT...so if he's still on the boards, I grab him. Sure that's 3 OT's in the draft, but if 2 of them work out that's fine. McNeil or Justice could also move inside to guard...so if Scott (who's a better pass blocker then Justice) can play LT then Justice is a force at LG...now we can put out an all american, all rookie OLINE!

6(173) although he hasn't made a presence yet, all american Rodrique Wright is a good gamble here. He can play NT and DT if he's motivated. Again he was projected much higher...and remember, the sixth round is a crap shoot.

7(211) Stanley McClover is waiting in the wings in Carolina - they guy is the type of hybrid DE/LB we need in the 34 defense.

So, if you must know, so far I'm behind the FO and Coaching staff - but I still wonder what might have been? I wouldn't mind losing this year and picking our new QB next year, when the line matures...

You're acting as if Pennington has done crap this year? He was playing great up until last week....he's not hurt and there is no reason to draft another QB next year with Clemens drafted last year if Pennington does go down. They need RB's or something.

Interesting assessment, as usual, GG. Always curious to look back, and you make some good points.

While I like Lil' Leon, you also gotta wonder how one of the premiere backs might have done... though without a line to run behind, they might all have Barlowesque numbers.

Yea, it would've been nice if it had gone that way. But, your plan is too perfect, and wile the draft is going in real-time, theres no way to predict that any of those guys would still be around, and we could've gotten pretty screwed that way.

I think our draft was excellent, and was very well-planned and safe. But, I definately would've loved had we gotten D'Brick, Mangold, and either Justice or McNeil, pretty much completely setting up out line instead of tradding down for Clemens, who, it doesn't look like will be playing anytime soon with Chad performing so well. He's gonna be our Matt Shaub, a great backup who never gets his chance to play.

    Wow, I like your draft.

Mainly I love the addition of the big bodies up front. I hate the fact that the Jets have decided to play the 300 pound (NE style, DEN style) "light" line. It's all good when you have the best players, but when you don't these guys end up getting pushed around against bigger more physical teams (aka JAX).

Jets need to draft some monsters next year, even before RB, QB, WR.

They key thing from any draft is to get 3 or 4 players who are solid going forward. If you look at the best drafting teams they are still at 50-60% at best. As of now we have 4 guys who are showing they can play in the nfl. Brick, Mangold, Leon Washington and Brad Smith. Obviously we really don't know if Clemens, Smith or Schlegel are going to be good nfl players. But if two of those guys become good players our draft could be looked at is a great draft.

I did get to watch Mcneil play against the Steelers and for a rookie LT, he was awesome. He has great size for that position. I still think down the road that Brick will be great, but he looked real good.

If you look at the wording (He's gonna be....), I thought I made it pretty clear that it is what I felt he would be. I didn't say that he currently is great, or even good. I just think that he will be good one day, but unfortunately he will be on the bench, and never see any action.

If you knew anything about the way I veiw the Jets, you would realize right away that I am not a Homer by any means. I try to be a realist, but lean slightly towards the pessimistic side...... you should refrain from judging people without knowing the slightest bit of information about them.

It's obviously way too early to evaluate players but Reggie Bush has done nothing for No except that PR last week that any returner could have scored on w/ that blocking. He almost cost them lst week's game as No tried to get reggie involved even though deuce was dominating and that made it a close game. He might turn out to be great but he hasn't even been good yet.

W/ a sterling 7.4 average and zero TDs. they are giving Bush every opportunity to make plays whether it's on the ground or in the air and he's not doing it.

I never denegrated Chad - he's a 30 year old QB with two shoulder operations behind him. I'd look to draft a star QB or RB #1 next year if we had gone in this direction.

I agree with nyjunc. Sure he's just a rookie, but Bush is not doing anything thus far this season to make me second guess not trading up for him. He has been pedestrian behind the Saints O-line that McAllister is looking very good running behind. Imagine how Bush would be looking here right now? And that's without Brick and likely Mangold. Looking back, I'm still very satisfied with how the first round played out for us. My big head scratcher remains Schlegel. He looked like a reach then, and now the guy is bringing nothing to the table, not even on special teams.
