This is a question for half the board that wants Rex fired.. I couldn't disagree more and think Rex should be retained. I feel he's done a good job on a whole and was dealt a losing hand this year and still got the max out of his players. Since he's been here we do have a solid defense. If we had any offense to speak of our defense may be lights out. Smith/sanchez have been awful.. What coach could have done better with these 2 clowns avg 2 turnovers a game. I understand the argument Rex needs to do a better job with the offense. Maybe so.. but all he could have done better was make sure we have a viable back up qb.. The organization on a whole lacks consistency. If anyone thinks bringing in a whole new staff and new philosophy will help please tell me why.. also who? Who out there is ready to step in and turn this team around. By team I mean who can step in and stop smith/sanchez or whoever else from being a grenade on the team. Good qb usually means good coach. Ex-john fox is spoken of as being great.. del Rio is name mentioned as a potential head coach candidate around the league. I wonder how long john fox would have lasted had peyton mannnig not signed there.. qb driven league-let me know what coach has had worse qbs and gotten more out of his team? To all you want Rex fired.. Who is replacing him and what will there plan be with smith and or sanchez.
I'm a Rex supporter, but I am coming around to the idea that he could be fired. First, Idzik has a plan and Rex wasn't not his guy. I completely agree with your question of who's a better replacement, but it will be Idzik's decision and Idzik might want his guy to come in. Idzik will be fully accountable for the hire and the fate of the team. Right now, he's still living with the decisions of the Tanny regime. To me, this is the most likely reason for Rex's departure. It may be unfair, but it's Idzik's call. Second, we have declined in points allowed in every one of Rex's seasons at the helm. 2009 - 236 pts 2010 - 304 pts 2011 - 363 pts 2012 - 375 pts 2013 - 380 pts thru 15 games For a defensive genius, that is not the direction we should be trending. Rex has given this franchise a lot of good moments and I am eternally grateful to him for bringing some attitude to a team that sorely needed it. The team plays hard and the players respect him. I'd be happy if he was retained, but if he were fired, I'd be OK with that too.
I am not a Rex supporter but I have stated in the past that instead of an extension, make 2014 his make or break year. My issues with Rex used to be his mouth writing checks the team couldn't cash along with a distinct inability to manage the team on whole. Three OC's in 3 years bears out my second point. He's not exactly the all time greatest mind ever to coach a defense either as some here would have you believe. His 3rd down blitzes are pretty predictable and his secondary is the weakest link on the team second only to special teams. As this topic has been discussed to death, I'll end my thoughts here. If you want to discuss this topic, in the future check to see if a similar topic hasn't already been posted. This keeps the board clean and easy to follow.
