From the get go, I thought the Jenkins deal was a steal for us because we inherited his contract that was a 2 year deal for about 3M per year. That meant: 1) We were getting him at a great discount because his market value today is much higher. 2) We had 2 years to try him out. If he was bad, hurt, malcontent we could cut him with NO cap implications. 3) He would be working is ass off to get a great new deal or to convince us to lock him up long term after next year. By giving him 20M guaranteed we just lost all of that. Now all we have is the hope that he is a "love of the game guy" and for our sake I hope he is. By giving him all this money upfront the Jets turned a great deal into a very risky deal.
We had to extend him, the last thing this guy wants to do in come to a new team and already have to deal with contract negotiations. This will ultimately help easing him into NY and his new role, he'll feel at home and secure in his new environment. Also, all Jenkins loves in his life is football. He has said that many times.
You have to give to get...if we didn't make a bold move for an all-pro than everyone would be calling Woody cheap.
The most important cog on a 3-4, the Jets finally get it and here comes the "Is it a good move to spend 20 million on a NT" thread. If he is a bonafide 3-4 NT then 20 mill over 5 years is a freakin bargain. Jenkins has the ability to be one of the top NT's. It is so worth the risk it is not funny.
It's not 20 million over a year dude...it's over his entire contract. If Jenkins stays healthy, he'll be a force on our defense. It's all worth it RIGHT NOW. We did "have" to make this signing. We needed a nose tackle, and Kris Jenkins will fill that role. He's been healthy for the past two seasons. Great trade and signing to start off '08.
Are you nuts? Going into this off-season, the Jets were one of the worst teams in the NFL. In order to improve, you have to take risks. Jenkins is a pro-bowl caliber player at the Jets' greatest position of need. You pay whatever it takes for that kind of opportunity.
Its not like Jenkins is a RB, WR, TE, T, K, P, S, CB, LB... Jenkins is a MONSTER... And he's a NT... And NT is the hardest position to fill out of ALL the positions... Money well spent, lets just knock on wood and hope he stays healthy, Because if he does... He will improve this D in so many ways, just go ask D.Harris
Drob counted 11.2 million on our cap this year. 20 million guaranteed over 5 years for a stud at NT is not overpaying in today's market.
It is 20M regardless what happens. He could have a career ending injury on the first day of camp and it would still be 20M.
The point is that we had him at 3M a year and then GAVE him 20M. Can you not see the logic of making him play at least 1 year at the contract he origninally agreed to before dumping your load on him? If he he is a great NT I don't care what you give him. But the guy has not played a down at NT ever.
Yeah, no kidding IF IF IF he is a bonafide NT then your right, it is a bargin. But if he is not we just wasted the money for no good reason. He had 2 years left on his deal. Why not make him prove he can play for at least one year and then give him his payday?
part of giving contracts is what free agency and trades are all about. if paying someone worries you, you probably shouldn't pay attention until the season starts.
we had to extend he was unhappy in carolina because of his contract and has motivational issues the new contract hopefully elminates these factors
