Now that the draft is over, we can take a look at how the 2015 team will compare to the 2014 team. 1. Coaching. I loved Rex Ryan, but it was clearly time to go. Players were never held accountable and they kept committing dumb penalties. More importantly the defense kept deteriorating despite continually adding first round picks. Case and point: points allowed 2009: 236 (best in league) 2010: 304 2011: 363 2012: 375 2013: 387 2014: 401 Bowles should serve as an upgrade. 2. Secondary The secondary was really bad last year. The jets were 30th in passing td's allowed. They were just 4 td's away from dead last. This offseason the Jets added 4 new players including Revis. The secondary should be much improved. It also helps that the qb's faced this year are not as good as the ones last year. 3. Offense. The Jets offense needed an upgrade from last year. The Qb will either be Geno or Fitzpatrick. This year they'll have Brandon Marshall and Devon Smith to throw to in addition to Decker, Kerley and Amaro. Stevan Ridley and Zac Stacy are both upgrades over Chris Johnson. Overall the Jets addressed a lot of their needs and improved the secondary and offense. The schedule should be much easier than last year, which makes me hopeful of a good season.
Chris Johnson wasn't great last year but I wouldn't say Ridley or Stacey are clear upgrades as over Johnson's production from last year.
offensively we still have some major issues; 1) QB- if geno improves or fitz beats him out we still have a weak qb situation 2) O-line. weak at gaurd and brick has been on a slow decline,. pass protection could be a big issue 3) playmaker. we dont really have a guy you can throw it to short who is going to make people miss. smith is a burner and can outrun people but he isnt shifty or a guy who is gonna make 3 people miss i think our offense will be average(which is still a nice upgrade) but we arent beating anybody unless the defense becoems elite again special teams is also a major concern for me. we dont have anyone i trust fielding punts (unless cro does it which id hope to avoid) and i dont have faith in quigley
Ridley certainly could be when healthy. Stacy will not. The RB situation is the one and only thing I haven't been a fan of this offseason.
The Jets should be better than last year. I think Revis is the key part of this. The guy is a superstar and the leader of a young defense. He says he's better because of his experience plus a year under Belichick and I believe him except for the fact he is older and still off of a serious injury. If you are going to overpay anyone than I'd choose Revis. The other acquisitions are not as important or as serious as chips in terms of what the GM can use down the line. The thing is he spent most of the salary cap without signing key players like Wilk. He did re-sign Harris. He obviously wants to go for it in 2015. To make a serious push for the playoffs. Overall he's doing a good job.
the harris signing is a killer. he gave big money to a guy who is bottom 10 at his position. it was the worst singing this offseason by any team.
Harris is making about 7.5 mil which isn't so bad. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/david-harris/ 15 of that is guaranteed. Or two more seasons. I think he's worth it. You can't replace those tackles he makes.
most of those "tackles he makes" are just bringing down the guy who just caught a pass on him cause he is terrible in coverage. he has become a 2 down player, and you dont pay a 2 down payer 7.5 million, not when better Fa ILBs got like half of that. it was a terible inexcusable contract
Look, Mac and Bowles looked at the film and wanted him back. I don't think those stats just fall into your lap. You can't toss out 124 tackles.
They signed him to be the quarterback of the defense as he has been for years and because they didn't think there was anybody else on the team who could handle that. If they didn't Ryan would have for the same reason.
What signing this year do you feel was worse around the league? take into consideration that rolondo mcclain(3M) got less then half of what harris got. Harris is a 2 down player who is an average ilb these days and is making probowl type money
tackles are the most overrated stat in football. and yeah, alot of them do fall into your lap, especially when you cant keep your guy from catching footballs. wanting him back is one thing. paying him over twice his worth is another
Your first point is your best one--coaching. The players liked Rex Ryan, but he never held anyone accountable and they would take advantage of that. You think anyone on the Packers LIKED Lombardi? In addition, Rex is one of the worst game managers ever--Did the jets ever not use all their timeouts under Rex just to substitute players or think about what to do? Rex Ryan would call a timeout to think about whether to call a timeout. Worst of all, every Rex press conference would be him gushing about the abilities of totally marginal players like Clyde Gates, Garrett McIntyre, Dexter McDougle, etc. I really think half of these guys believed the stuff Rex was saying about them, didn't work as hard as they could, and never developed. We don't need a cheerleader we need a coach and let's hope Bowles is the latter.
Look, Harris isn't a coverage guy he is a tackler. And he can do that job well enough to get that contract. Which is less than the one he was on before which averaged over 9 with 25 guaranteed. So he took a pay cut.
you dont think the seahawks players like pete carroll? bowles philosiphy and approach looks just as bad as Rex's does once you stop winning. players just start tuning you out. being loos with players vs. running a tight shit work just as well. both go in the tank once you start losing. all that matters is getting players to play hard for you, and getting the X's and o's right. rex did alot of those things. his biggest flaw was staying loyal to terrible QBs, and putting in the wrong people to coach the offense
