http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/ It?s not news when a team hosts a college player before the draft -- each team is allowed to interview/examine up to 30 out-of-town prospects -- but here?s an intriguing name that should be passed along: Miami TE Greg Olsen. Olsen, linked to the Jets in many mock drafts across the Internet and in football publications, visited Weeb Ewbank Hall last Friday to meet with coaches and team officials. This confirms the speculation: Yes, the Jets have an interest in the athletic, pass-catching tight end from Wayne, N.J. I?m also told they huddled with him at the scouting combine in February. Whether the Jets like him enough to choose him in the first round (25th overall) is another story, but they certainly seem to be doing their homework. They have a solid, blue-collar tight end in Chris Baker, but they could be tempted by someone who can split a seam and stretch a defense. Is he good enough as a receiver to make the Jets overlook his deficiencies as a blocker? Good question. This much is known: The Jets haven?t been visiting with many skill-position players, if any. That would seem to indicate their interest in Olsen is genuine. If he slips past the Panthers (No. 14), Olsen could tumble into the Jets? lap. I'm hoping Olsen is gone by #25......I prefer we get Ben Patrick in Rd 2 or Matt Spaeth in Day 2.
I would be very happy with Olsen...I think he is a Jeremey Shockey clone without the attitude problems. I say it alot, but I really feel that Chris Baker is vastly overrated on the message boards. He is a pretty good reciever and a pretty good run blocker. He is more of a #2 TE...not a starting TE. If he was so good...why didn't anyone make a run for him in Free Agency last offseason? Greg Olsen can do exactly what this article says...stretch the field. Not only that, but the Jets were also a poor redzone offense last season and having a 6'5" 250 pound TE with 4.5 speed could help tremendously in this department. Olsen is one of the 5 to 7 players I want at 25. If he is there I don't see how the Jets can pass on that kind of offensive weapon. Haiving said all of that...I still like Justin Blalock, Anthony Spencer, Chris Houston, Aaron Ross, and Jarvis Moss equally as much as Greg Olsen.\ So if we somehow don't get Olsen, there will still be good players available.
Man, I really couldn't say how disappointed I'd be if Greg Olsen were the pick. I just can't imagine the staff going for someone like him that underachieved so much at Miami. He could have been at the level that Shockey and Winslow hit, but he just couldn't. I know you talk about the offense and the QB he played with, but a true stud would shine through no matter what. What Olsen leaves in my mind is a guy that's good for a couple plays a game, but nothing resembling consistency, that's really not what i'd look for in a 1st round TE. I'd rather take Zach Miller. Then again, the last Hurricane that I questioned as much as I do Olsen is Frank Gore, so what do I know.
I'm not sure how much I love Olsen, he's a great pass catcher who never really got his due because of bad QB play at the U. His blocking concerns me, and I hope its not as bad as people say. Chad would benefit greatly with the use of a big play TE, and I'm sure Schott wants one badly too.
I completely agree with these comments, except the Frank Gore one. Gore showed amazing ability, his knees just betrayed him at UM. I remember watching him as a freshman and he averaged 10 yards per, or very close to it. Back to Olsen. If you guys are all for grabbing a TE that dropped so many crucial passes, he's your guy. As far as him being hampered by a poor QB, last time I checked, Kellen Winslow was strapped with Brock Berlin and he was flat out sick at UM. Olsen never came close to being the dominant TE that Shockey, Winslow or even Bubba Franks became ay UM, and he's a horrible blocker. NO THANKS...
Yeh, count me out for the news, I do not want him at all, I am not on the Chris Baker wagon but, this is not an upgrade,
just think about how our offense would be different with olsen, a one dimensional pass-catching (sometimes) te and then picture our offense with justin blalock, the genius road grader that's been missing on the right side for years and the choice to me seems clear.
most likely he will be taken long before that, even if he comes to us. forget it take ross and draft a TE in round 2
My concern with Frank was pretty much based on the injuries and the shape he was in during his junior year. The way he balooned up for that season I thought he lost the desire to come back one more time. I still think Miami wins that 02 title if they throw Gore in the game after Willis goes down too... but that's just me. Of course, if he never got hurt he probably would have been the best to ever play RB at UM.
I could live with a lot of picks at #25, but if we take Greg Olsen, than I'm done watching the draft... It would have surprised me more if they DIDN'T have Olsen in for a visit. This shouldn't be too telling of news.
I just can't believe they'd do that. My feeling is that the FO likes safe first round picks and Olsen is far from safe - not as far as Houston, but still, Olsen doesn't seem to fit heir MO - of course, it's onl been one year, so what do we know.
Although I have other guys who I'd rather have at 25, if we chose him I wouln't be too steamed. I guess that's what a good FO does. I'll trust that they'll have made the right decision if it comes down to us picking him @ 25.
