Here's what HAS happened: - CB Antonio Cromartie has been traded for - FS Brodney Pool has been signed ASSUME the following (Both scenarios likely at this point) - RB Leon Washington is not signed away for a 2nd round pick. - RB Ladainian Tomlinson (Or another veteran since its obvious they're looking to sign one) has been signed. And ASSUME the following potential #29 targets are already taken in addition to the top guys like Eric Berry, the DTs, CJ Spiller etc... : - WR Dez Bryant - WR Golden Tate - OL Mike Iupati - DL Jared Odrick - DT Dan Williams - OLB Sergio Kindle - OLB Brandon Graham - CB Devin McCourty - CB Kyle Wilson - S Taylor Mays - S Earl Thomas All of these players are potential targets at #29 and are at positions of need. With the acquisitions of CB Antonio Cromartie, FS Brodney Pool, and RB Ladainian Tomlinson OR another veteran RB, the top positions of need become OLB, DE, slot WR, and maybe depth at OL or DB... The top 3-4 OLBs are gone and the next best would be someone like Jerry Hughes, then there's a bit of a drop-off. DE Jared Odrick is gone and someone like Alex Carrington or Tyson Alualu would be a reach. So what happens here? Do you reach for an OLB or a 3-4 DE? Do you take Terrence Cody? I present to you: TE Jermaine Gresham. He was a monster in his first couple seasons before an injury robbed him of a senior year. There is certainly a need for another receiving target even with the starters Cotchery and Edwards in place. Keller is the TE, but with his speed and effectiveness as a receever, he is almost like a slot receiver at time. Maybe two-TE sets are the way to go being that this is a run-oriented team. It's clear there really isn't an effective backup on the roster. There's Hartstock, and Robert "#75 has reported eligible" Turner. I am not on the Jermaine Gresham bandwagon or going all in for him, but I want to say this: If the team is at a tough spot at #29 and does not trade down, I'd be very happy with a guy like Gresham. Just trying to throw another name out there for us. Discuss
We resigned hartstock, were not drafting a TE in the first round. Id rather take Brian Price from UCLA
I'm having a tough time envisioning a draft in which ALL of those guys are gone by 29. At the very least, Tate should be available.
Where would Brian Price fit in the 3-4? And just because Hartstock was resigned, it doesn't mean they still aren't open to bringing in a TE. Hell, just because Cromartie and Pool were brought in, I wouldn't eliminate safety or corner if the right value is there. But if Jared Odrick, Brandon Graham, Kyle Wilson, Devin McCourty aren't around... What would you do. Am I saying I think that Jermaine Gresham WILL be the pick? No Am I saying it would my FAVORITE pick? No What I am trying to do is open the considerations at #29 because some of the top prospects we're looking at won't be available. It is a new method of thought and one that could absolutely work. Think outside the box a little bit. The draft is still over a month away and a lot can happen.
Take Cody. the TE position is less of a problem than the old DL rotation. I still stand by my Pouncey selection.
It's pretty to say you'll just trade down and it's way too ideal to just assume you can do. That would be my first choice too if Odrick, Tate, and Graham are gone Throw some names out there then for the Jets at 29 Gresham would add another dimension to the offense and would make the need for a slot WR almost disappear with Brad Smith and David Clowney still around. Of course adding another receiver for depth would help. Imagine the offense with two dynamic threats like Keller and Gresham. There's always a lot of BIG surprises on draft day in the first round as we all know. I just want to bring up one possible surprise.
I'd like to see the offense fully utilize Keller before we add 'another dynamic threat' like Gresham. Again, I just don't see him being our highest rated onthe draft board when we pick.
I fear the idea of taking a TE who didn't play football last year due to injury in the 1st round. He might fall to the mid to late 30s
I'm not sure what is funnier. The fact that you think the Jets should draft Gresham or that you have Mays ranked above him. As Iggy said, we still haven't fully utilized one TE, how the Hell are we going to work both in at the same time? You want more names? Everson Griffin, Carlos Dunlap.
Our offense doesn't require two tight ends. Drafting Gresham would be a mistake. I'd rather reach for a player than draft a tight end.
The point of this thread wasn't supposed to be "DRAFT GRESHAM!".. It's supposed to open more possibilities at #29 rather than the same guys that have been discussed for the past couple months... It seems there's an OVERWHELMING consensus here, and I definitely expected this. But I wouldn't be upset But the team could use a #2 TE and with some top names gone I'd be open to the possibility. So for your own benefit don't get bent over shape over this thread. It's just an idea. And for the record, I would absolutely prefer Gresham over Mays, mainly because I think he has bust written all over him. There's A LOT of guys I'd take over Mays.
The only possibility you gave us was Jermaine Gresham. I would be upset. Why in the shit would we use a first round pick on a backup tight end? Ben Hartsock was re-signed to fill that spot. If this team wants another option at the position, they should look in the later rounds. If we had to choose between Jermaine Gresham and Taylor Mays, I'd take Mays...and I hate Mays.
I know New England needs defense......don't be surprised if they draft Gresham. The only Tight End on the Pat's roster...fucking nobody. This thread is a waste of bandwidth......were not drafting a Tight end.
Hah... The thought has been extremely shut down. No worries, just a thought to pass time and create some stir. I'm not normally one to support TEs even before Keller in the draft. So I thought I'd try something different. Carry on and don't get bent out of shape.
