How would you fix the team? What coaches would you pursue? What free agents would you pursue? Who would you draft?
In general terms, I'd target RT and LG in free agency. I'm not sold on Brandon Moore at RG, but the Jets just extended his contract so I guess he would cost too much to ride the bench or be released. I would also look to bring in one or two o-linemen in the draft's mid to lower rounds to start building some depth. With the top two picks I would bring in 3-4 defensive personnel. I think the Jets two biggest problems this season (or is it already last season?) were the woeful offensive line and the mix of 3-4 and 4-3 players on the D. I would also bring in a coach to teach everyone how to tackle properly. Every NFL team is now plagued with sloppy tacking (some of the attempted tackles by the Chargers against the Pats were just unforgiveable). A team that can tackle well throughout the defense would have an edge and this is a skill that can be taught.
If i was the owner i know i need to add more Playmakers and guys who are determined to win and win NOW. I Would bring in a good O Linemen coach which it seems the Jets did already with Callahan who has had his troubles as a Coach in college but as a NFL assistant with the Offense is pretty good. We need a D Cordinator whos gonna bring in fire and passion , Sutton lacks that so pursue a guy like Rob ryan with the raiders or Rex ryan his bro but there situations are tough at the moment , But signing anyone who has knowledge over the Thirty Four is probally better then what where getting with sutton. Free Agency is a big time for us to get back into contention i would try to Sign Al Haynesworth to play NT or End but i doubt the Titans let em go. Need to beef up that Bad OLine so we pursue Stacey Andrews try to get him Inked to a deal , then go after another Linemen perhaps Jacon Bell of Tennesee or the two Colts Linemen Lilja or Jake scott. We got two very good recievers in Coles and Cotchery but coles is been through alot he's a road warrior and we need a Third reciever with the size and speed to stretch the field maybe a guy like Drew Carter with da panthers or Bernard Berrian a guy with great speed and Play making abilities. Cant help but cringe when u think of our Defense situation , we need a Big NT guys like Sopoaga , Al Haynesworth and Corey Williams can help our cause on the line i would try for one of those guys. We need a constant Pass Rusher. TERRELL SUGGS < we need to get this guy , Great player hopefully the ravens part ways and cant forget about Asante samuel Mangini's guy and imagine him and Revis for the next decade. We have so many holes that this draft we look to maybe Stock Pile some picks and get more quality players but thats ofcourse if we trade away our sixth overall and if we do get a guy like suggs or even dansby i then say forget about Gholston and Trade for more picks. time ill tell hope our GM's Make something happen for once lol.
I'd go get a team of professionals to run the Jets. I'd try very hard to convince somebody like Mike Holmgren or Bill Cowher that there was still life in football for them and that they'd get to run the whole show with the Jets. I'd want them as the SVP of Football Operations, a position that would have the entire football side of the operation reporting directly to them. They could figure the rest out from there, hiring a GM if they wanted or splitting that task as they saw fit among subsidiary positions. They could even do the GM job themselves if they thought that was the way to go. Everything after that would be dependent on what their courses of action were.
Make a decision on some of the most popular current players. Sign Coles and Rhodes. Trade Vilma and Robertson. This will free up additonal space under the cap to sign players more suitable to play the 3-4 defense. Take the money that we're currently under the cap with ($25million without factoring Vilma, Robertson and other free agents) and aggresively build the Offensive Line and bolster the Secondary. Having NE and now MIA (with Parcells) in the same division means we must win in the trenches. Faneca and Stacey Andrews plus maybe Randall Gay, for starter. If we have enough, maybe even consider Asante Samuels (in all likelyhood, he's gone from NE). Draft V. Gholston in the first. Focus in on 3-4 players in the draft. Maybe some OT help in rounds 4-7. Get bigger, stronger and smarter along the Offesive line. Find players who can be a beast in the 3-4. Establish a strong running game and PLAY SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL!
As a good owner, I would allow my front office personnel to run the team. I would open up the purse strings and allow my GM to spend on the best coaching staff my money could buy. Then I'd sit back and wait to be called to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. If it didn't look like that would happen in a reasonable amount of time, I would get a staff that could.
I would definitely recommend to the coach that we move D'brick inside to guard and go out and draft or sign a better tackle.. Ala the "Gallery" move with the raiders....Look to get a game breaker at WR and definitely a nose tackle to keep the center of Vilma..So a tackle, WR and a nose tackle...If we can get a RYAN for D coordinator that would be nice also..
Putting myself in the shoes of Woody Johnson... How would you fix the team? I would stand back and let Mangini and Tannenbaum do their job. I hired these guys to be THE guys to fix the Jets, and I'm not going to let one shitty season get in the way of that. It is hard as anything to be a Jet fan right now, I understand, but if you look at most of the successful teams in the NFL, they got to where they are through continuity. Hell, even the Giants, who have what we all thought was a shit coach, and a shit QB, are now in the Super Bowl. Continuity on top. What coaches would you pursue? If I were giving my input, my focus is on a couple of things - first and foremost, a new OL coach. I want a top dollar OL coach, someone who is really going to coach up what we have, and possibly even coach up a future OL coach since top dollar coaches typically don't stick. Additionally, if such a person were available, I would hire from within the organization a new ST coach... this is about the only area of the Jets that is solid... I want a coach who knows the system and isn't going to make many changes there, and is familiar with Westhoff so they can lean on him for help. What free agents would you pursue? My top priority in free agency is offensive line. I emphasize to Mike and Eric that they had better come up with two IMPACT offensive linemen... even if they have Jake Long pegged as their #1 prospect in the whole draft, and think for sure that they can get him at 6... I want the offensive line fixed NOW damnit. I also would pursue a top flight linebacker, such as Terrell Suggs or Karlos Dansby... The LB corps in the 3-4 needs 2-3 new LBs, and though we will likely end up drafting one in the first round, I would like to land another impact player at this position, as it may be the primary reason for many of the defenses failings this year. Who would you draft? Going into the draft, my top priority is pass rush and size in the defensive front 7. While OL is the top concern of the team, there is already a lot of youth there so I fix that problem through FA rather than adding even more youth... on the other hand, the front 7 of the Jets is not exactly young, definitely not big, and definitely not aggressive enough. David Harris is an excellent start to building up the front 7 into a good 3-4 unit, and I would like to continue in this direction. At the 6th overall pick, I look very strongly at Chris Long and Vernon Gholston, both excellent prospects who I feel can make a huge impact on our defense. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds, I look at CB and WR, both positions where we don't need a #1, but definitely need good young players who can make an impact in the future. Rounds 4-7 I spend looking at sizable, strong OL and DL to provide much needed depth on both side of the ball. I also potentially look for any "hidden gem" QBs in the late rounds, as I am not looking to replace Kellen Clemens just yet, but at the same time it never hurts to provide him with as much competition as possible.
The best owners are the one's that take a step back and let the people who are professional football people do their job. The fact is that none of us has professionally scouted, been aroudn a professional sports organization. That's the problem with a lot of the owners, they think just because they watch the game or because they have previously made a fortune in business that they can now run a professional sports organization.
if that homo d'bustashaw cant play lt with his skill set, he;ll be a disaster as a guard...too small, light and gay
Jay Cross and Bradway would be gone today. I would offer Poili the job as President and GM and give him a minority stake in the team. Tanny and Mangini would be his decision if he wanted to bring BB in as the GM I would be okay with that.
i would hire a GM, give him a blank check, and get out of the way. If I were GM, that would be another story.
We all got screwed when he bought the team. We will look back on that event and regret it for eternity. He is a humantiarian and his #1 objective in life is not the NY Jets. What a disaster. He is not a football man and will never be.
