I've read the following about him: 1) He's a worse prospect than Alex Barron, who was a mid-low 1st rounder last year. 2) He's a below-average run blocker, who lacks power. We don't need to spend the #4 overall pick on a one dimentional player, who can pass block but will be a liability in the running game. We need someone who will help in the running game - maybe McNeill or Winston at #29 would be a better option...
A lot of people overrate him. He's going to be a good tackle, but he's not in the Jones, Ogden, Pace, Samuels, Gallery class coming out of college.
Yes he's overrated and there is no chance that he will be a jet with Pearson coming in, we will have 2 servicable LTs. We need an RT now.
I don't think that is true at all. Brick has been rated in top 4 last year (before he decided to go back to school) and this year. So I don't know where you heard that from. It is not so much he is a below average run blocker. He is a little small, but every scouting report says he can add 15-20 pounds to his frame. I don't think he lacks power, he just needs to add some bulk. But that is a much easier problem to fix than if he had to teach him pass-blocking techique, of which he is a natural and more than enough talent. Anyway the LT is supposed to be able to protect the QB, therefore his pass blocking is more important. The RT is supposed to be a better run blocker. Normally anyway.
I'm not a fan of taking a OL this high unless he is completely bulletproof, which D'Brick is not. He has some shortcomings. On the other hand he has a lot of upside and a rare athletecism so I would not be overly disappointed if we took him at 4, even though it is a bit of a reach in my eyes.
He's a considerably better prospect than Barron was coming out. In terms of his upside,he COULD be in the Pace/Jones league. But that isn't a lock, as there are alot of things he needs to improve on. He's overrated by alot of Jet fans, who think if we throw a high draft pick at the OL, our Line will be magically saved. Not the case. Ferguson will have to come in and work hard at improving his strength and run blocking skills.
copy and pasted from another thread, since you know people tend to drift topics about ferguson the same way every time...(its annoying that people continue to start new ones) why is everyone freaking out about a linemen at #4, hell two went in the top 5 a few years back (pace #1 overall, and then the now premier LT in the league jones went at #5 overall) and to all those who detract, need to understand some things, yes pace was a tad bigger coming out of college, a bit more heralded (but not much, look at this draft class compared to that one and then you'll understand why), pace was a better run blocker coming out, but on par with if not maybe a tad worse than ferguson at pass blocking, jones was never an amazing run blocker and still isn't..he has gotten better at it over time to become solid at it, but still is a much better pass blocker, and got better at that to coming to the point he's the best OVERALL LT in the league (and run blocking is nowhere near as important as pass blocking when guarding the left side/qb's blind side) ferguson is about on par with them, the knock on him is a bit of being undersized (but not by to much anymore) and being a little raw (he was a walk-on), but the thing is he's still just as good, and his upside is even higher because he does have quite a bit of untapped potential...the guy seriously has the talent to go #1, but because of what the #1 pick has become (especially money wise at the moment), it's generally going to be QB's (with some possible outside shots for a top RB, DE, or OT..if the QB class is weak enough) i feel like sticking that post of mine in my friggin sig so people shut the hell up already
It depends who you want to draft. If you want Leinart, Mario, Hawk, etc, youre going to say hes overrated. I rather overrate a 4 yr starter who pretty much dominated than some QB who won like 4 games and the only thing he has going for him is "hes like Brett Favre." I honestly think none of the top 6 are overrated(maybe Mario, people act like hes Reggie White and Julius Peppers put together) Reggie Bush - Heisman Winner with ridiculous tools Matt Leinart - Heisman Winner, always made the right decisions especially during crunch time Vince Young - Single Handedly won the Championship game against the unstoppable USC Mario Williams - Had one good year with 14 sacks. His stock is based on his combine numbers(which scares me because I hate when players get evaluated on their combine numbers. He wasnt as dominant as you would expect, so it makes me wonder if he wasnt the beast he shouldve been in college, how is he going to be a beast in the NFL) A.J. Hawk - Probably the best Linebacker prospect in years. Hes always making a play. Seems like hes everywhere on the field. D'Brickashaw Ferguson - 4 yr starter. Didnt give up many sacks(didnt give up a sack either his junior or sophmore yr). Dominant in Pass protection(which is a LTs primary purpose). Sometime struggles in Run Blocking, but has steadily improved over the yrs(probably because he has been putting on weight). Shut down Jason Babin and Shawne Merriman, 2 1st rd DEs. Hes better than Alex Barron and his run blocking needs improvement due to the fact that he was smaller in college. If D'Brick is overrated, then the entire football viewing audience is overrating him too, because hes the consensus #1 LT on everyone's draft board. IMO, Adrian Jones is overrated. Talk about not doing anything in his career and yet alot act like hes the future of the Jets. I'll take the 4 yr all american, all acc, all everything this kid has accomplished starter over wishful thinking anyday.
the problem with mario is his work ethic to extent, at least on the field, he kind of takes plays off a bit, which is why he hasn't completely dominated compared to peppers
I completely disagree. He's in that class easily. Anything said about him in the negative is simply nitpicking. How good a pro will he make? Only time will tell. But he's the class of the OT's this year, and this is a strong OT class.
We won't really know how good he is until he straps it up against NFL players. What we do know is that he dominated the competition during the Senior Bowl. I would have no problem if the Jets picked him at #4.
I don't think it's nitpicking. He is a bad run blocker. Obviously run protection isn't as important on the left side, but it is still something you have to do, and he is poor at it. That's not nitpicking. He had problems getting pushed around in college, even if he adds 20 pounds to his frame, he'll still have the same problems with the much bigger ends in the NFL. This is a very strong OT class in terms of depth. He is the top tackle in a class that lacks a definitive, complete, franchise LT.
Honestly, I think the hype on everyone in the upcoming draft, except Bush, is a little out of control. There is no Peyton Manning in this draft, much less a Carson Palmer. There is no Orlando Pace or Tony Boselli. Williams has not shown enough in college to say he's the next Peppers. I'm not saying we take Hawk, but as a LB he has few weaknesses at his position and virtually no character questions. Bush has the potential to take over games and the only question on Huff is where in the D-Backfield he'll play and be more effective, but he could be a superstar anywhere at DB. With a top 5 pick you are looking for an NFL Superstar at their given position. Not a college superstar, we've seen the Ty Detmers and Andre Wares come in with awards up the wazoo and fail. Brick looks like a star pass blocking, no doubt that will be his strength. His supporters are downplaying the importance of run blocking from the left side. He is no better than an average run blocker at this time. NEWSFLASH ... NFL teams run to the LEFT also, and ALOT. He has the potential to be the total package and has big upside but he is currently NOT the total package and thus somewhat of a reach at #4. I will not be upset either way. He will fill a major need and he will be an upgrade. But if you think he's gonna step on the field and be a force to be reckoned with you will be disappointed. He will take some time to develop, moreso than Pace and Boselli.
Pace, Ogden, or Jones were not "complete franchise LTs" either. They all had things they had to work on. There is no definitive ANYTHING when talking about draft prospects. I never read any scouting reports that said he is a "bad" or "poor" run blocker. They just say that he is not as good a run blocker as he is pass blocker. Since he is very athletic and a natural pass blocker that says something. His problem in run blocking is his bulk. If he adds some wieght it will add to his strength and ability to stand against the ends and stronger RBs. And once an NFL CS teaches him better run blocking technique, you will see an apparent improvement, IMO. Brick was also rated in the top 4 last year before he announced he was going back to school.
the guy is a monster, so his senior year wasn't amazing, you just don't hear about him as much because UVA sucks. He's been projected as a top 5 pick since he was a junior.
Is Bush a lock??? I think he's a little small and is not durable enough to run 20-25 times a game between the tackles. Williams - great tools, but who knows?? Leinart - people are questioning his arm strength and wonder whether it was him or whether the immense talent around him lifted his game. Cutler? Who heard of him until two months ago. Players who climb up the draft board based on post-season work outs and accomplishments scare me Young? His throwing motion is atrocious. He appears to be dumb as a post if you believe the Wonderlic stuff (not a good trait for a QB) and he has never ever taken a snap from center. Look at the top five picks from every year and there are stars and busts. 2004: Eli Manning - the jury is out Robert Gallery - doesn't appear to be worth it, but may be coming around Larry Fitzgerald - the real deal, but in my opinion, WRs are never worth taking that early. Phillip Rivers - we'll know soon Sean Taylor - was a lock to be a star, now may be locked up for a few years (who figured on that???) 2003 Carson Palmer - for real Charles Rogers - bust Andre Johnson - good player, but a WR can't lift a bad team Dewayne Robertson - Just OK Terence Newman - was he worth the money? 2002 David Carr- his stock is dropping Julius Peppers - talented but injury prone Joey Harrington - bust Mike Williams - bust Quentin Jammer - played well this year, but not a star 2001 Michael Vick - the most overrated player in the NFL Leonard Davis - Question Gerard Warren - bust Justin Smith - decent end, but not worth a top five pick Tomlinson - star 2000 Courtney Brown - bust LaVar Arrington - any takers yet?? Chris Samuels - for real Peter Warrick - bust Jamal Lewis - a few very good years, but appears done Every year is the same. Now, let's read what ESPN Magazine is saying about Ferguson - this is very telling "Reggie Bush? Durability Questions. Matt Leinart? Arm strength issues. Jay Cutler? Hype. D'Briskshaw Ferguson? Let's see. No holes in this offensive tackle's game. He stayed at Virginia an extra year to soak up fundamentals from longtime NFL coach Al Groh. He answered questions about his weight by beefing up from 295 pounds to 312 at the combine. But, you know, he's smart. Maybe too smart. He earned a degree in religious studies in three and a half years, has a black belt in karate and has mastered the sax. So natrually, his dedication is being questioned." "But the real wild card might be Ferguson. Everyone agrees he's a top five talent, and in a non-Reggie Bush year, he might have been a consensus No. 1. But a lot of what you have heard lately are negatives. "he's not a road-grader like Orlando Pace."(Of course, since few teams drive-block anymore, that shouldn't be such a big issue). The craziest knock? "Some people are saying that because he learned a musical instrument he has other interests and he's not committed to football," says an NFL exec who finds the sax allegations hilarious." Yeah. Over-rated. Stay away from this guy. We have Adrian Jones!!!!!
