Do you have any evidence to refute this? According to Mike Francesa Mehta and Pettine play basketball together. Francesa is saying he heard from people at the Jets who say that Pettine is the source.
Either Francesa or Pettine is in deep shit right now and I wouldn't bet that Francesa is in trouble. The big breaking story today just became "Mike Pettine is an anonymous scumbag ripping his own team on a regular basis."
Pettine did turn down a contract extension, which implies some level of displeasure with the position. Why he would backstab his coach, I don't have an answer for.
If Pettine has been leaking stuff to the media and the team knew about it, then he should have been fired a long time ago. More reason why we need to clean house and bring in a competent President/GM to run this organization.
I wouldn't be so sure what Francesa said is true. First of all, it sounds like he's speculating. Secondly, I think he'd love nothing more than to be the one to cause Rex to go off the deep end freaking out and costing him his job. I'm waiting for things to shake out here before making any assumptions.
Honestly, no matter what happens next year, Woody needs to stop these leaks. That would cut out 90 percent of the circus atmosphere in a hurry.
If you're Woody Johnson, how are you not curled into a ball and crying at this point? The constant day to day embarrassment and the contiuous media leaks that show just how dysfunctional this organization really is would be enough to have any normal person fire everyone and start over. I realize that is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction, but this stuff just doesn't get better.
It's possible that Francesa is just speculating but if so he is doing so in very strong terms. If Pettine gets fired Francesa could be liable at this point. I think the odds are he's telling us something that has been circulating behind the scenes for awhile.
If Pettine has been de-stabilizing the Jets for 2+ years now that really clouds the situation with Rex. First of all you can't evaluate the last two years properly given the locker room issues and how much the anonymous sources stories contributed to that. However the second thing that is there is that Rex had a viper at his bosom and either didn't know about it or didn't know how to deal with it. It's complicated.
Woody's franchise is beyond a circus. You got Francesa outing Pettine on the air and Rex saying this is his dream job in a rah rah speech. Just get rid of the whole damn staff and bring a new GM in to build this thing.
BTW, Cimini might be FakeSteiny, Pettine might be the mole, these are lousy stories to be circulating around any organization. The Jets need to get control of this somehow.
