I see where you're coming from. From talking with a friend of mine who is a Giants fan he always felt that Eli was mediocre to OK, but always at least played like he was on the verge of turning the corner. I didn't see it, but I didn't watch the Giants on a weekly basis. I pretty much agree with the second paragraph. I think I'm arguing more with those who envision a development plan for Clemens that would involve him being back on the bench this year. I don't see how giving the guy half a shitty season of play, and then stuffing him back on the bench once you actually have decent personnel on offense would help him progress. As if watching Pennington play with a better offense is somehow going to make Clemens better. I agree he's going to have growing pains and I fully expect that. But I'd rather have Clemens growing pains than the same old story with Chad. I'd rather find out now if Clemens can't hack it than wait a year and be set back even further than we already are. I want the Jets to win now damnit!
Eh, I don't know how you can watch ANY player and see them ready to "turn the corner." I think Giants' fans were generally hopeful Eli could put it all together, but there were few reasons to believe it. Eli was always able to play at a high level at times, he would temper this by making boneheaded decisions. He stopped doing that, for some inexplicable reason, in the playoffs and I couldn't be happier. I agree with you that you don't bench Clemens now, that negates any good things he learned last year and retards his growth as a QB a lot. As far as Chad goes the question the Jets have to ask themselves is, if he plays QB and plays within himself (which I think he is great at doing) then can they seriously compete for the Lombardi trophy. That is the only scenario in which I can see Pennington starting, otherwise Clemens is your guy.
In that case Clemens is the guy because Pennington has played within himself in much better times and has been smoked. The guy had a nice run with the Jets in his healthier years but as far as I'm concerned, he's done. This isn't the same group for the most part that he rolled with, and it's time to move on.
Clemens is totally your boy, as I see it. Pennington can manage games well and if your roster were more talented (and I am NOT saying that it isn't talented now) he could do some good things back there. Clemens has the arm strength that is needed to play in the NFL. Arm strength, as I see it, is not what makes you a great QB, but you generally need it if you want to play QB at all. I know Montana didn't have a cannon, but he still made all the throws he had to. He also had ball placement skills that most guys could only dream of. Okay ( now that I've gotten myself far off topic) Clemens is your starter and you live and die with his learning curve. For what it's worth, I also think you need to overtake Buffalo before you can overtake NE.
lets be honest, teams like the falcons, dolphfags, raiders, kc, and the rams, there fo knows that maybe just maybe thay can compete this year [they'll be happy w/7 wins] and there fans know to, so they say another piece here and there and we could make the playoffs in 09, meanwhile our fo is thinking, playoffs this year and then in 09 make a sb run, of course teams arent gonna say, ah i think we'll go about 5-11, but realisticly, there gm's and coaches know
I dissagree..........Chad gives us the best chance to win NOW...I understand that Clemens is the future, and I wish the best for him, but for this upcoming season, I wanna see what Chad can do with all of these new weapons!
How many years do you think Chad has left? And do you think this team can compete for an SB with Chad at the helm? Because benching Clemens sets him far back and probably makes you draft another QB instead of turning to him in a year or 3 when Chad is done.
If Clemens isn't our guy now, then he never will be. He should be able to easily beat Pennington in camp and win the starting job. He has a better arm, had more success last year than Penny even though Coles and Cotchery were more healthy for Penny, and has had all the developmental time he needs to become the full time starter. This is it. Now is the time to turn over the reigns. I definitely believe that Clemens should be made to earn the job from Pennington. I think he can do it and will, and once he does, there is no turning back.
I dont think he will EASILY beat out Pennington for the job - if he does it at all. But I'm good with the competition for the starting job....May the best man win!.....I'm just saying, that with all of the improvements we've made this off season, I would love to see the healthy, experienced veteran in there to make the plays while Kellen watches and learns for 1 more year.
I think Pennington's best role for the team is as backup. The problem is that the unexperienced prospect is better already than the experienced veteran. Last year proved that. That is why Clemens should be starting now.
uh.....gotta disagree AGAIN, dude..........Last year proved nothing. Neither guy performed well. I AM with you though on Chad being a valuable back up - IF he loses the starting job.
I'm with you. Pennington is a great backup at this point. On an exceptionally talented team he could start. With his experience he may be the better man AT THIS POINT, but that approach disregards the future of your team.
I don't think it disregards our future, Giants fan. I'm just looking at everyone's body of work, where we are NOW (Chad's not THAT old) and I understand that Kellen is a great talent for the Future! I just think that Chad has that veteran savvy that would work well with our new weapons and that we need to strike NOW! If we fall short, (poor play , injuries, etc. )then give it to Clemens and work harder at developing AINGE....just different philosophies I guess, we ALL want to win. No matter HOW it shakes out, I hope they don't trade Chad!
I don't think you give Clemens enough credit for his "now" ability. The most recent "now" had Clemens winning 3 games, while Pennington only won 1, in approximately equal playing time, and Pennington having arguably a healthier offense around him. Clemens was literally given the ball after shit had already hit the fan and did more with it than his predecessor.
When Chad has that 'veteran savvy' is when he has an all-Pro line in front of him. And our playbook is still limited. We don't know what Clemens has with a good o-line and we need to find out. Chad is the past.
OK ...........agree to disagree folks- I like Chad- you don't. I DO want to see how Clemens works out- I just think that our best chance to reach the wild-card THIS YEAR is to go with Pennington. I'm not gonna change your mind and you obviously aren't gonna change mine. Either way- GO J-E-T-S!!!!!
I would rather win the Super Bowl in by building the offense around a young QB than 'reach the wild-card' and have to move onto a different QB after Chad once again proves he is completely impotent in the 4th quarter. Chad doesn't 'just win games'. Chad just barely loses games.
Well, Chad has to clearly beat out Kellen in a protracted open competition this off-season. I think that is the best course for the team, and may the best man win. However, the NYJs need to keep both guys in case of injury or serious unforeseen problems.
Can you define what you mean by win now? Like win the SB or just the AFC Championship or just 2 POs games or just 1 PO game or just a winning record?
