Over the past 24 hours sources have told me two bits of free agency news. The first is the New York Jets will be in the running for Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman James Carpenter. Getting back to the New York Jets, I spoke with a league insiders about the teams free agency plans. I was told the Jets intend to be big players in the free agent market, specifically on defense. I’m told they will target outside linebackers and cornerbacks as big ticket items. They evidently will look for younger, taller corners. Potential free agents who fit the mold include Davon House, Chris Culliver and someone familiar to the teams new general manager Mike Maccagnan, Kareem Jackson. I’m told they will look to add depth on the defensive line and hope to add a mid-value guard, someone that won’t cost a lot of money. When asked if the Jets would go after Mike Iupati the response was, “the present belief around the league is they won’t spend $8 million for Iupati.”
I don't blame them for not investing heavily in the line because what really would they be protecting?
I'd be OK with Carpenter. My 2nd pick after Clint Boling (who seems more and more like he's going back to Cincinnati).
Addition by subtraction. Any OG we bring in from FA will be better than Winters and Colon. If Mac is targeting OLB and CB in FA maybe he will focus the draft on O. Cooper or White with #6 or trade down slightly for Parker.
Guys but this is obvious as well...We need vets at cornerback and obviously would be great to get a upgrade at linebacker. We need vets all around
Big players is referring to us being very active in it. I don't think it means spending huge money on guys
I have no problem with James Carpenter. Guy started 13 games for one of the top rushing teams. I'd rather spend $8 mil on a playmaker or defensive back as opposed to a guard. The Jets could always draft a lineman in the first round as well.
i don't know much about Carpenter, other than scratching my head when Seattle took him in the 1st round in 2011 (couple picks before we landed big Mo who i really wanted). He's played LG at Seattle, and has never had a positive run block ranking in PFF. never a positive run block ranking with a very impressive overall team run game, and back who can create yds. that scares me a bit. his pass blocking has been avg. if they go the Carpenter route, that tells me they plan on throwing a lot. maybe more a spread/finesse offense instead of a physical run heavy O. not sure how i feel about that considering our QB situation.
I basically agree, at least from a pass protection standpoint. Even if you bring in a solid but unspectacular guy like Clint Boling (?), that is already a huge upgrade over Winters / Aboushi at the LG spot. Who wouldn't love to have pro bowlers at both Guard spots, but you can't have everybody.
I think I'd prefer Stefan Wisniewski over James Carpenter if they don't want to spend for Orlando Franklin. I wouldn't want to see them spend more than $8m for Iupati either. Based on what I saw last year and the PFF numbers after the season, I'd like to see Aboushi given every chance to start at one of the OG spots. He still should get better as a pass-blocker, but he's a plus run blocker and made the line a lot better after he took over for Winters. IMO, Aboushi doesn't need to upgraded (though he should earn the starting spot over Winters and Dozier), but the other side does Couldn't complain about one of those CBs, but I don't want to see them drastically overpay someone. Wonder which, if any, free agent OLB they would be targeting.
after last year i will never listen to a jets source about fa ever..they were linked to every player and didn't do shit
