I think the best memory I have is seeing his picture on the back page of a NY newspaper...with his eyes closed! His best work was short passing and dumps to backs. Never on my list of favorite QB's. I didn't like him taking over instead of Matt Robinson
I loved Matty Robinson and at the time he was traded I felt the Jets moved the wrong QB. That said, Todd does deserve some credit, he played very well in 1981 and in 1982. The gutty drive he led with a bum ankle and a fractured rib to beat Miami in this game (I was at the game) was perhaps his best regular season moment as a NY Jet:
Yep, that's the game I remember him for too. Other than that I remember him as a frustrating Qb who flashed some brilliance but tortured you with inconsistency and interceptions. Also remember the sign they had up the last game at Shea before moving to Meadowlands "NJ is for LOSERS and Re-Todd", Jets fans at their best!!
I always resented him for taking over for Joe Willie, in 1976 they split time and in the 2nd half at Shea when he came in I would leave
Also liked Robinson, but in all fairness to the Jets, Robinson never amounted to much after he left NY. Reminiscent of '92 when Jeff Blake clearly outperformed Browning Nagle in preseason, but the Jets went with Nagle.
We were 3-11 every year forever till 8-8 with Matt in '78, and fuckin Pat Leahy missed 2 XP's and a 30 yard FG against Pats for the playoffs
Todd was more a running QB in college ('Bama ran the wishbone then) so why the Jets drafted Todd let alone in the 1st round is a mystery (must've thought his 'Bama pedigree was going to do the trick much like the Yankees drafting "Okie" Bobby Murcer to replace the Mick [though Murcer turned out to be a very good player] ). Anyway, one of Todd's best days came in 1977 in a shootout loss to heavily-favored Oakland 28-27. Todd threw for nearly 400 yards and 4 tds (with 2 ints). The difference was a missed Pat Leahy PAT. Late in the game with the Jets up 27-25, Oakland attempted to put the game away with a chip shot FG from 27 yards. Errol Mann missed the chippie but the Jets--god bless 'em--were penalized for running into the kicker: . .game, set and match, Oakland.
he couldn't touch champ's favorite placekicker, curley johnson crusher, but that fumble by (harper?) really helped put the jets in a hole
