$4.5mil a year is more than enough for anyone with half a brain to be more than set for life. LW is one of my favorite Jets and I would hate to see him go, but come on - this is more than fair. These money-grubbing agents make me want to puke. Take the deal and let's play f'in ball already.

$4.5 Million / year is more than adequate. If he doesn't take this offer then we should forget it until the offseason. If something still can't be done we should tag him

in which we would be in the same spot, waiting for a long term contract.

Considering we were all using 4.5 as the benchmark, given Derrick Ward's contract and the Sproles tag number, it's exactly what he deserves as dictated by the market. I'm just shocked the Jets offer was $2 million this whole time. I had assumed they were in the range of 4 and he and/or Keels was being unreasonable. Now that it's all out there, we can see Leon's true colors.

Yes, but we need to have a resolution one way or the other for the 2009 season.

Oh I agree. And I think Leon will come to his senses and realize this is the best he'll get this year. Hopefully that fairy of an agent will too.

And I think it's a totally fair deal. Hopefully they will agree and we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

If next year is uncapped he's an RFA not UFA, we could hit him with the restricted tag at a much lower cost. Slap the franchise on him 2 years in a row and Leon is 30. He should really be looking at this deal as his best chance to get some long term security and take it.

If the NFLPA and the NFL reach an agreement on a new CBA by March 30, 2010 Leon Washington will immediately become a UFA (otherwise staying an RFA as he will be designated when Free Agency opens in February if the CBA is not in effect and an uncapped season looms for 2010) and be eligible to be signed by any team for no direct compensation to the Jets. The Jets would receive a 4th round sandwich pick under that scenario unless the new CBA somehow modified the compensation rate for UFA's.

Why will the NFL and the NFLPA be locked in negotiations until March 30th? Because the provisions for the NFL draft for 2010 will be in dispute if the deadline passes and no agreement is reached. The NFL draft is currently protected by the CBA and almost immune to successful challenge in the courts because it involves a term of employment collectively negotiated by management and labor. In the absence of said agreement the incoming players will be able to make the case that the draft is an unreasonable restraint on their ability to ply their trade and is effectively an informal agreement between the players and the teams to restrict competition for wages in the industry.

This fight may well be waged at some point in the near future anyway, but there are agents out there that would love the excuse to fight it on fair ground in 2010.

I'd just sign Washington to a ballpark deal, and that ballpark would be 6 million+ a year, the amount that Darren Sproles is tendered for (despite not being the Chargers #1 runningback). If not the Jets will be at the mercy of a process that cares absolutely nothing about their position vis-a-vis Leon Washington.

4.5m per means nothing without knowing the guaranteed figure, buyout clauses, etc.

This deal will be done in a few days, no way leon says no to that. It's the money he deserves, he'll take it.

You can't use the Redskins as a point of reference. Daniel Snyder is a football idiot.

BTW, I figured the contract would be 4.5mil, hopefully Leon's dickweed agent won't press the issue further.

4.5 is fair, like 8 million to David Lee. Leon, take it! Don't want to see him go.

Exactly. Give him a 4 or a 5 year deal. Give him in 12m range for guaranteed money. Should not be a problem.

    best deal possible

i think leon should hold out for the best deal possible as football takes 20 yrs of one's life.if the guaranteed money isn't right then do what's necessary to attain the right figures.this is the same advice i would give to family..sorry ya'll

He did. That deal is on the table now. He's not going to get a better one, and could in fact hurt himself if he doesn't take it. The team can tie him up for 3 more years and he'd have no guarantees for future money.

Agree. Don't know the full details of the deal, but if the guaranteed money is in line with fair market, then I would expect this deal to be signed off on quickly. I am a little suprised actually that this hasn' been inked by now.

Iggy's right. 4.5mil a year IS the best deal possible... unless he wants to play for a moron team like the Skins or the Raiders that overpay for talent and put them in the best position to fail.
