I get a bonner for big hits. Let's build on this defense. Qb is least of our worries. WR before Qb, we have a running attack anyway. Run, Run, PA, Run.
There is some crazy talk in this thread, fuck the QB, we don't need a QB? QB is the most important position in the sport and until we get a top QB we aren't winning anything. The D is going to improve just by scheme alone, yes they are still missing some pieces to become elite but are a hell of alot closer then the O is. If we have a chance to get a potential franchise QB, we need to finally do it. The rest will fall into place and is easier to find then a top QB.
Well, you aren't going to win anything without a good defense and a good offense so they better improve both. They have to find a way to get a starting QB, CB and pass rusher at least.
what about Channing Crowder from the Dolphins? I think he's a viable option if B. Scott wants too much money plus he's young. Looking at the D-line we have Ellis who is going to be 32 when the season starts, Coleman 30 and Jenkins 30. I think we should draft a prospect this year either at DE or NT to develop him (in like 3rd to 5th round) and next year get a DE to replace Ellis in either FA or round 2. Plus i think we should re-sign Mosley who is coming along well...
well played. but, the 2006 super bowl is in your head for one reason and one reason only. it was unprecidented. 2006 scnario plays out once every 50 years. the jets are only 41 years in the waiting, so we'd have to wait another 9 years. better yet, go all the way back to the 2008/9 sb. ...ooops, we're back to qb again. sorry. hey, i'm really trying here.
Actually, just look at the Jets period. When they have had a good offense their defense sucked and when they had a good defense their offense sucked. So there was one year when they had both and that was 1968. It's not rocket science, you need both.
This is the formula. Problem is to win the Sb at some point your Qb is going to have to step up and make plays? Big ben this year Eli next? Defense can get you to the playoffs it can't win you the big game by itself.
It is important to have a good Qb - the issue is whether the Jets already have one. Putting that aside, the other issue with that article is it dissects the needs on D without discussing who plays CB opposite Revis. Since I think THAT is the most pressing need on D, it kind of leaves a gaping hole in the analysis. At least if one disagrees that CB is an issue, you should identify who is supposed to start opposite Revis.
I think the Cb problem will be solved with the 17th pick in the draft this year. Hopefully an improved pass rush will help our Cb's out even more. I think an improved pass rush would have helped our Cb's a lot last year.
That was a good team all around, they just had everyone hurt at the end, namely Klecko, Gastineau for a while, and Reggie McElroy at LT. Klecko missed the playoffs. I think if you can get heat on the passer it can cover a weakness in the secondary, especially since we do have Revis and Rhodes back there, it's not like we have nobody. Those 80s teams didn't have great DBs but the pass rush covered up that flaw. Bobby Jackson and Jerry Holmes were ok, neither was dominant or ever made the Pro Bowl, our safties were nobody special either. Ken Schroy? Who else? I don't even remember, nobody special.
This is not the formula except in New England, and the only reason the formula went that way then was because Belichik was a defensive genius with a clue. Miami found their QB (Griese), then built their defense and won two Super Bowls. Pittsburgh found their QB (Bradshaw), then built their defense won four Super Bowls. Dallas found their QB (Meredith), then built their defense and dominated from 1966 onwards, replacing the QB as events required until they found Staubach and won two Super Bowls. Dallas found their QB (Aikman), built their defense and then won three Super Bowls. Green Bay found their QB (Starr) built their defense and won two Super Bowls. San Francisco found their QB (Montana), built their defense and won five Siper Bowls, replacing Montana with Young when events required. The counter cases, where a team built a dominating defense and then went out and found a QB and won it all are rarer and much less persuasive. The fact that Belichik's crew is in that group may look like strong evidence, but that's only because we're caught in the backwash at the moment. Belichik is an almost unique talent in the coaching ranks and he got away with doing it his way only because he got lucky and a 6th round pick turned into a top of the draft quality QB. Otherwise the last 8 years would be looking a lot more like 2000 for the Pats than what has actually transpired. The Jets need to go find their QB if they want to climb off the treadmill and get in the actual race. We haven't had a franchise QB in 38 years now and that's why things have gone down the way they have.
Oh, I agree about 86. That was a response to Don's post. I understand your point about the pass rush, but my understanding of Ryan's D is that he likes to have CB's who both can play man coverage when necessary. That is not what the Jets presently have. Fourth, I certainly hope they use a high pick at CB, unless of course they can cover that in FA.
I think the Jets CB's can play man coverage if they fix the pass rush. Darrelle Revis got burned a few times down the stretch and there's no question than he can play man coverage, it's just that if you are lined up opposite a good receiver and the QB gets 5 or 6 seconds to throw he's going to complete the pass a lot of the time.
That's what I'm saying. You give most NFL QBs too much time and they will pick you apart, that's why prevent defenses don't work. It's also why we never get off the field on 3rd and long.
This was a great post and all your examples are Fantastic. Especially pointing out the fact that Belicick led teams are the exception not the rule. If having a great D was the blueprint the Ravens would have had more than one Super bowl this decade. Their lack of a Qb has deprived them of their legacy. It sums everything up in a nutshell.
The problem is the Jets do not appear this year to be in a position to pick up a franchise Qb. Merely insisting that they need to do that does not mean they can.
