Mark's a goner. Absolutely. I'd be 100% shocked if he is back at all.

I see no downside to this for the Jets, but the fact that he was willing to sign for so little so early certainly doesn't indicate that anyone around the league thinks he is a good prospect (something various people seemed to think during the season).

    Good news...

At least we'll get to see some more from him.
    I really think he's pretty good...and he's got a great arm.

It's a reasonable signing. He'll get another year with Mornhinweg and who knows, maybe a light bulb will go off in his head and he'll suddenly be able to match a good arm with everything else you need to be a QB in the NFL.

The Jets now have two QB's under contract who have good physical tools and need to catch up to the NFL mentally. That increases the odds they'll have one available next year. Now they need to go out and get somebody who can step onto the field and actually play if Geno still hasn't caught up to the pro game by next season.

Matt Simms shot at playing basically comes down to whether or not the guys in front of him get hurt. That's still a shot and maybe he'll run with it if it happens.

I am guessing resigning Matt Simms - rules out drafting a QB. Just can't see the Jets going into TC with 4 QBs AGAIN.

I don't know about that, if the chips fall where a QB is BPA your could see Smith, a vet, Simms, and mid rd draft pick competing for a spot.

    maybe...

It would seem more likely that the Jets would go get a veteran QB to compete for the job as opposed to have two young guys in a competition with a third young guy looking over their shoulder.

However, it's also possible that the Jets just signed Simms as an insurance policy and to avoid looking very shallow at QB when they release Mark Sanchez. He's a very cheap signing and it's not clear how much if any of it is guaranteed.

Having Simms in hand makes it easier to negotiate with other veteran backups because the Jets don't look desperate for another body. It also makes it harder to read the Jets draft intentions.

Good point - I think the Jets are going to put the QB position in a better situation this off-season. I think 4 QBs is far too many to carry on the team. Vet, Geno, and Rookie (or Simms if they believe Simms is a better option then the rookie QBs available).

Those 3 guys alone need as many reps as possible.

Certainly seems as if the FO is fond of 1 year deals. I like this move as it doesn't threaten Smith, makes Simms feel wanted and still leaves the door open for a vet QB to come in and play unlike Garrard who basically sucked down a roster spot for nothing.

Regarding Sanchez, I still say he would benefit most from backing up an established, successful pro like say, Philip Rivers in SD. That would put Mark back in SoCal where I think he'd be most comfortable.

Sanchez will be on MTV's reality show call list in 3 years. I hope he invested his money well.

The last person Geno wants to see on the roster come training camp is Mark Sanchez. I do not think Geno has a shred of confidence that he'd be able to outplay Sanchez throughout training camp and be named the clear winner/starter.

Eh, I don't know about that. Although he didn't outright beat Mark this past season.

That's bullshit. In training camp everyone was talking about Geno and how he was playing a little better then Sanchez, It wasn't until he got hurt and was practicing on one foot did the great Sanchez actually out perform him.

Mark will be best served as a back up to a real good QB, to where he will never have to see the field.

Very good post, Brad. The calendar, specifically the timing of the off season bonus payment to Sanchez, which I believe calls for a March 1 payment, means he will probably be cut before then, and the Jets can't count on signing or trading for a vet Qb before then. Having Simms on the squad means the Jets will appear somewhat less desperate to get a vet Qb than if Sanchez had been cut and only Smith remained on the roster.

That in turn means it is no sure thing Simms will be on the roster on Opening Day, despite this signing. The contract is cheap enough, and we don't konw what actual cash will have to be paid if Simms is not retained.

I say this as a fan of his who thinks the Jets have yet to give him a real shot, and that he has talent. But as a fan I still am not confident he remains on the roster through the off season.

And to be clear I also think the signing is probably a signal that the Jets are more likely to seek a vet than go high draft pick for a Qb.

I would even go so far as to say the signing may well be a sign that they will not go Qb in the draft even with a mid round pick, unless of course real value falls to them.
