Someone posted this link here as proof of allens shortcomings, so i'll break all the plays down 00 SG , quick throw outside. thrown on time and accurately. simple easy throw but done correct 07 SG , PA, again quick throw outside executed perfect. easy throw but done correct 13 SG, 3rd and 6, Drops back, pocket collapses, avoids the rush, tries to gun it downfield. throw was good, but decision was bad. DB jumps it and knocks it down but cna't pick it due to being on the sideline and momentum carrying him OOB. he should have thrown it away 21 SG, pocket stays clean, surveys the field, fires an out route to the WR on the sidelines. perfect throw and an NFL level throw 26 UC, 1st and 10, PA, rolls out to avoid rush and throws ball away. Smart play 34 SG, 3rd and 8, quick read, completes pass to WR underneath on an out route. WR gets stopped short of the 1st down marker. still an NFL throw and common play called in the NFL. WR catches the ball in stride and can turn upfield. perfect placement. 42 SG, 1st and 10, WR goes in motion behind the QB, allen takes the snap and throws to WR in motion, easy quick play but again perfect placement. easy throw but again he throws to keep his targets moving foward 52 SG, 1st and 10, quick read out route. fires on time, perfect throw and an NFL throw, picks up 5 yards 1:00 SG, 3rd and 4, Free runner, avoids the rush, throws on the run against his body into a tight window for the 1st down. impressive play and throw and an NFL type throw for sure in a tight window to keep a drive alive 1:07 SG 2nd and 7, avoids rush and throws ball away, smart play 1:15 SG, 3rd an 7, PA, quick throw underneath again to the WR on time but he falls a yard short 1:23 SG 4th an 1, QB draw played called, picks up the first down 1:28 UC, 2nd and 9, drops back, has to avoid the rush. works pocket well to buy time and steps up but sails the ball way over the WRs head. bad throw, the 1st one i've seen so far in this game 1:37 SG, 2nd and 19, another well thrown short out route to pick up half the distance 1:43 SG, 3rd and 10, defense blows up the o-line, he avoids the sack at first and could have chucked it away, but goes back towards the middle of the field looking to make a big throw downfield and ultimately gets sacked. Normally i'd say he should have thrown it away after avoiding the 1st sack, but since it was 3rd down hard to fault him for trying to avoid a punt in a 0-0 game. They kicked a FG to take a 3 point lead anyway (3-0) 2:00 (4mins left in the half, down 3-7 now) UC, 1st and 10, PA roll out, easy pass outside executed perfectly. 2:09 SG, 3rd and 3, PA, QB draw play, swallowed up for a loss 2:22 SG 1st and 10, free runner again, avoids the rush and smartly throws the ball away but appears he didn't get it far enough and is called for Int grounding 2:30 SG, 2nd and 29, QB draw for little gain 2:37 SG, 3rd and 28, PA, QB draw for a loss End of half (please wait to comment until after the full post)
His Iowa tape isn’t as bad as people think but his bowl game was awesome. Showed us 3 different ways he can score.
2nd half. allen down 14-3 by the time he gets his 1st possession in the 2nd half 2:44 UC, 2nd and 9, pass a little behind the WR but in a tight window and allows him to protect himself from the hit. not a perfect throw, but a nice 1st down throw you'd expect from an NFL QB. 2:51 UC, 2nd and 5, PA, roll out. throws a perfect curl route for a 1st down 2:58 UC, 2nd and 1, clean pocket, steps up and throws a perfect deep ball 40+ yards in air to a well covered WR. DB makes an amazing play on it and knocks it down. This is a throw that 99 out of 100 times is a TD. hard to fault allen for a great play by the defense. 3:09 SG, 1st and 10, PA, roll out, easy pass to underneath target in stride 3:16 UC, 2nd and 3, Quick pass to outside WR against soft coverage. Allen sails the ball way too high. incomplete. bad pass 3:20 SG, 3rd and 3, beautiful pass on an out route leading the WR towards the sidelines away from the trailing DB for a 1st down 3:28 SG, 2nd and 3, quick out route that should have been a 1st down. great placement low and away from the DB but the WR lets it bounce off his chest for an incomplete pass. great throw, bad drop 3:35 SG, 3rd and 3, throws the out route again. Not a great throw as he throws behind the WR forcing him to reach back. it bounces off his hands. catch-able ball so i'll call it a drop, but not a good throw either. both the QB and WR share some blame for this failure to get a 1st down Defense lets up a TD, now down 21-3 with 5 mins left in the 3rd 3:42 SG, 2nd and 10, avoids the rush, throws off back foot short a little high but completes it for about 5 yards. throw was in front though so momentum kept going for the WR, but should have been a little lower 3;50 SG, 3rd and 5, has to throw off his back foot while jumping back due to the rush. sails the ball way high over the middle. bad throw that could be picked at the NFL level 3:59 UC, from the 36 yard line. PA, steps up in the pocket to avoid the rush. throws on the run a rope 40 yards downfield into the endzone. a perfect throw with the WR having 2 steps on the DB hitting him in stride. the WR drops the easy TD. Amazing throw that you wan't to see from an NFL QB. SO an amazing throw that should have been a TD and closed the gap to 11 points, winds up as an in-completion. very impressive throw, you can't do it better then that 4:15 SG, 3rd and 8, PA QB draw, only picks up 3 yards. Last play in the 3rd quarter for the offense 4:22 UC, 2nd and 9, PA , RO, misses wide throwing on the run OOB. 4:28 SG, 3rd and 9, Nice pocket, stands in it and delivers over the middle on a nice throw , slant route for a 1st down
4:35 UC, 1st and 10, looks downfield, but settles on the short route for no gain. dangerous throw if you don't have a big arm, but he gets it in there safely 4:43 SG, 2nd and 10, pump fake, looks off defenders, fires downfield in the zone between 3 defenders. excellent NFL type throw for a 23 yard gan 4:51 UC, 1st and 10, PA, has to roll out to avoid the rush and smartly throws it away 4:59 SG, 3rd and 4, easily his worst play of the game, he has to roll out to avoid the rush yet again, but makes a throw late and off his back foot jumping back, which allows the DB to jump the route and pick it off. should have ate the sack or threw it away. They are down big with time expiring so i get taking the chance, but this was the nail in the coffin. sometimes it's ok to punt 5:25 SG, 1st and 10, Sails an out route way too high. bad pass 5:30 SG, 2nd and 10, completes it for short gain, but not a good pass. thrown behind the WR forcing him to stop his route 5:37 SG, 3rd and 9, Clean pocket, steps up and delivers an excellent ball on the out route for a 1st down 5:44 SG, 1st and 10, excellent throw on the timing comeback route to pick up 12 and a 1st down 5:52 SG, 1st and 10, throws outside on a curl route. throw is high but WR makes a great catch then drops it on the hit for no completion 5:58 SG, 2nd and 10, Poor throw, was too far insisde and the reciever was well covered. LBer makes a diving attempt at an INT but just knocks it down 6:06 SG 3rd and 10, rolls out to avoid the rush, tries to direct traffic downfield, then takes off and runs picking up the 1st down 6:15 SG, 1st and 10, good pocket, takes the short route. good throw outside. nothing special. 6:21 SG, 2nd and 8, throws early with a rush in his face and throws a "safe" ball low for his WR who dives and lets it bounce off hsi chest. not a good throw, but not a bad throw. 6:28 SG, 3rd and 8, Screen play is called, defense snifs it out and cuts underneath, allen makes a poor throw right into the defenses hands for an INT. this is a play where "NFL QBs" Throw the ball at the RBs feet Overall: What i seen here is a pretty mixed bag. Allen shows a great ability to throw downfield with accuracy and touch. He also throws a beautiful out route. It's a hard game to gauge a QB on due to playing from behind most of the game and having to go into "desperation mode" and basically run out of the shotgun and chuck it most of the 2nd half. the WRs and o-line and run game did little to help Allen. He isn't surrounded by much and his best pass of the day which should had been a 37 yard TD, was dropped. After that drop, his play dropped as well. Before that, most of his passes were perfect, but after that he started sailing more balls and throwing more behind. he also spent most of the game running for his life, and playing in 2nd and 3rd and longs. The OC also called a "safe" 1st half with a lot of 1 read quick short throws. it's a really hard game to gauge Allen on though. Both his INTs came in the 4th quarter down by 3 possessions and on 3rd down. at that point you have to feel like he was "just trying to make something happen on offense" and wouldn't be the way he normally plays. Still a bad play is a bad play regardless of the situation so he sholdn't get a pass for it. This is why allen needs to sit for a year, the talent is there but he needs to eliminate mistakes, but should shine surrounded by players who aren't a complete liability. Now you can all comment
thanks! and while true, it still falls on the QB. the only time an INT isn't his fault is if the target drops it or the target falls down on a timing route. he's gotta get the ball over the lineman on those passes
He was pretty decent this game, one of his better tapes outside of the Bowl game. He was sailing a lot of passes in that game and that stalled some drives. I also thought he was too quick to leave the pocket, although the pressure was great, having good pocket presence, resetting your feet and making throws is signs of a good QB using their skill-sets. Big Ben isn't scared of staying in the pocket (even with 2 guys breathing on him) and uses his size to his advantage, that is something Allen would need to learn.
ben has a lot of experience. Qbs who play with a bad o-line start seeing "ghost rushers" Vinny T admitted it himself. David carr fell into that category as well. I didn't see Allen bail with "ghost rushers" all of his bailings were pretty legit. His o-line was garbage. I wouldn't mind seeing allen put on some weight though. Ben shurgs off blitzing Dbs due to his size
LOL...Iowa is not one of his better tapes this past season. It's probably the second worst behind Oregon. It certainly contains his 2 worst INTs out of his 6 total.
I figured as much since the poster used this video as an example of why Allen sucks. If this is his worst game, i wouldn't be the least bit worried about drafting Allen. I mean big ben is a future HOF, multiple pro bowls, 2 time SB winning QB and he was awful against the jags this season throwing 5 picks, then lit them up in the playoffs. every player has a bad game
A man with that size shouldn't have that mindset, you have that train that out of him. He has wheels, but at times hes not smart when he scrambles and extends the play. Look at 2:21 for example, the overload blitz and goes towards the direction of the blitz and his receivers are going the other way. The bad offensive line to me I can't use that when Lamar had a bad offensive line and severely better under pressure.
The first interception I put on him, the 2nd one the game was out of reach. The 3 1/2 quarters, he played well despite being overmatched. He was completing passing short, intermediate and down the field. Boise State he was bad. Iowa is a great team, I put more stock on better competition.
he kind of looked fucked either way lol wans't even a blitz. only 4 rushers and 1 was untouched and another broke right up the middle I do agree though, a QB should always look to slide in the pocket or step up when he can, but sometimes it isn't an option and you bail. Sometimes when you trust your WR enough you'll stand in and make a risky throw. being an NFL QB si not an easy thing to do, which is why there is a huge lack of good ones. Things like that can be learned though. You can't learn arm talent though
Part of being accurate is being consistent too IMO. But its better then not displaying the ability to make THAT throw (Mayfield). Not gonna lie, I like Allen a little more today then I did last week, I still prefer Jackson over both of them but hey thats out of the question now
everyone has their misses. I'd take a QB who can make every throw 90% of the time, over a QB who can only make half the NFL throws but does it 100% of the time. When you use a top 3 pick for a QB, you don't want someone that limits your offense. QBs you have to build an offense around, are those you draft in later rounds.
