At first, i was like wtf??? Do we really get rid of Baker? But after some thinking about the pick, i don?t think that Picking Keller has anything to do with Baker or Franks. The Jets didn?t have the 11th guy on offense last year. Our system is set up for 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 H-Back, or depending on the opponent 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 RB. We neither had a H-Back, nor a viable Slot-WR last year. Whoever lined up in the slot could?t catch a cold. And Kowalewski, who was the closesd thing to a H-Back, was solid in the Blocking game, but was as dangerous in the passinggame as Kris Jenkins with his Hands tied on his Back. None of this guys was a headache for any DC in the lague, if we come out with 3 WRs, just get your #3 CB in, he?ll get the Job done, and if not, they?re gonna drop the ball anyway. If we come out with Kowalewski, play your typical front, any LB in this league can cover him. Now we got the 11th player on O. Keller is a Headache for a DC, he is fast enought to demand a Nickel-package or limits the opponent to C1 or C3, because a S has to come down and take him. You better have one heck of a coverage-LB if you want to run your typical Defenspackage and -sceme. He might not be the best Runnblocker out there, but he?s good enough to kick out the Nickelback or S who?s supposed to cover him downfield. I expect him to be used as a typical H-Back, move him around from the Backfield, to the slot to the TE-spot, a lot of motions and shifts to create a lot of missmatches. This guy could really add a new dimension to our Offense and be a player, who opens up a lot of things for the rest of the Offense, because the D always has to worry about, where he is.
right on. picking at 30, i really can't come up with another player, offense or defense, that will bring more than keller will to our game. wr and te usually don't make much noise in year 1, but keller is different. his transition to the pros will be more like that of DMC. just do what you did in college. get off the line, beat the lb, look for the ball. plus, a team like NE with older lb/s (jr., harrison, brucshi) will have even more trouble trying to cover this kid. totally agree. nice pick up. another plus, getting keller one pick ahead of the g-girls killed the shockey trade witch means shockey will be disrupting the giants for yet another long season.
Seems like a good player 6'2 242 LBS Fast and Great hands he will cause alot of matchups for Mangini and C.S. to use. Will be fun to see wut this kid can do.
This pick also is growing on me. In a way, it is like drafting a top WR without threatening Coles or Cotchery. Teams will have to use a DB to cover this guy and, if they do, he will have a big size advantage (if they use a LB to cover him, he'll leave them in a cloud of dust). Also, as opposed to a regular WR, this guy probably has more flexibility in terms of how he can be used, which you know Mangini must like. You hate to have to give up a 4th rounder to make what many thought was a surprise pick, by Tanny is right in that late 1st round is where other top TEs have been taken in prior years (and where most thought this guy would be taken this year). However, if he is really the guy the Jets coveted, you can understand the trade, especially when there probably was a 50/50 shot someone else would have taken him. Mike
I do expect him to take some time to adjust, but he should be an instant upgrade over Kowalewski. Kowalewski got a lot of playingtim last year, so Keller should get a lot of chances to prove himself. Franks should be a good mentor, when it comes to finding the little holes in the coverage. I don?t the Giants would have drafted him, they seem pretty confident in Kevin Boss.
