I stand corrected, perhaps it was $18 Million signing bonus. And I wasn't aware of how that hits the Cap either, so thank you for pointing that out. I'm not exactly a Cap guy as you can tell. But either way, it's a ridiculous amount of money. Lawrence Taylor in his prime? Maybe I do it. But Abraham? Uh... not right now, but thanks anyway. It is extremely interesting though, how the lack of a new CBA affects all this, isn't it? It's ironic that the current CBA, which should still be the financial guardian of all players, adversely affects guys like Abe. If something isn't worked out soon, Abe is SOL. Unfortunately, so are we, because we'll wind up tagging him and not being able to trade him, at least not for what we might otherwise be able to get for him.
John Abraham and Ty Law were the only two impact players on the Jets defense last year.... Jonothon Vilma actually had a lot of tackles but didn't make a lot of impact plays. When they are gone they have to be replaced. Bryan Thomas has been a Jet four years and is still thought to be a project with potential.. after four years he is what he is, certainly not a John Abraham replacement. Ty Law can't be replaced either. Justin Miller had the distinction of being the absolute worst player in the NFL with respect to playmaking. Drool all you want over his athleticism but his performance is exactly what the Sporting News thought it would be last year. A player who misses too many tackles and is poor in coverage. http://twominutewarning.com/d05rtg.htm Defense will have major problems next year and don't count on Mangini to fix it. In his only year as a DC his team finished 26th in total defense and 31st in pass defense. http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/DEF-PASSING/2005/regular
AB & TL are players that I would normally want on my team. Our cap problem and their $ demands means that we simply can not afford them! Signing them would severely hinder our ability to fortify our other needs. If we can't score we can't win. Money has to be spent on the offensive side of the ball. Yes, I we do need some help on defense but our over riding concern must be the OL. If we had better DL play last year Vilma would have be much more an impact player.
Well half of your thread is done with law gone..now we can sign nate clements...he will be cheaper than law.
I would like to see what Miller and Strait can do before we sign a marquee CB. We have many more pressing needs than the secondary. Barrett is not bad as a nickel guy. And the Giants are probably going to get the top CB anyway.
Most of the above posts are true about our defense (and lack of impact plays from some) etc., but we shouldn't ignore the fact that our DEF was on the field in some games for a total of 35-40 minutes! Our OFF was so impotent they'd go 3-and-out and punt, and back on the field goes our DEF with their tongues hanging out! Not only that, but because we couldn't score points, we were often behind early and had to try to play catch-up. Now the opposing team gets to run all kinds of sh*t plays at you and run the ball more and there goes the pass rush. Come on, guys, at least give a little credit to the DEF for even keeping us in games for as long as they did. It's a miracle we even won 4 games with the way our Offense looked... truly abysmal. Don't know the statistics, but we probably scored as many Defensive TD's as Offensive ones! Bottom line: you want to see an improvement in our DEF? Improve the OFF. The rest will follow.
by the time this team is good again ty law might be in canton....as for abe id like to keep him but he is an expensive malcontent and given our cap situation he isnt worth it...your post gives the impression that the people who want these guys gone just think they suck and should be cut.....thats over simplifiing things...its a bit more complicated my friend
Law was never anything more then a stop gap. He was the proverbial "final piece". Now, with the Jets all but out of the SB race next year, it makes no sense to keep him. Barrett and Miller can start next year, with Miller getting the experience he needs so he is ready when the Jets get ready to make another push in a couple years or so. As for Abraham, it is simply a case of money, or lack thereof. He's going to command a huge salary, and the Jets just don't have the cap space to keep him. It's simply an unfortunate reality of the salary cap ear of the NFL.
Much like an offensive line, a good defense is for other teams. All we need is Phillip Rivers or Jay Cutler. Those guys will get the Jets to the superbowl single handedly. The Jets don't need a shutdown corner. Or a pass rush. All they need is a quarterback who can launch the ball.
I know you're trying to prove a point, but that makes absolutely no sense in this thread. Could you stop being sarcastic all the time? This thread has nothing to do with that.
Look, you guys don't work in the front office. You don't know whether we can afford Abe and still rebuild the team around him. You don't know anything so just stop. What do you guys mean by replaceable anyway? Any player is 'replaceable' officially. You can always sign or draft a player to be there. But will the guy who replaces him be anywhere near as good? Probably not. Bryan Thomas certainly isn't. It's like saying it's ok to let Julius Peppers go cause you can just replace him. Fuck that nonsense. John Abraham is an amazing player and a standup guy. He's been our best defensive player for 5 years and needs to remain on the team. What we should do is release everyone else and deal with the consequences. The dead weight we have on our team are the ones who are truly 'replaceable'. John Abraham, what a great guy.
My guess is we'll trade Abe to the Falcons (denver might get involved 2) ... and we'll probably just cut Law...and nobody will sign him... just a hunch.
Agreed. At least half of Ty's interceptions were the result of deflections caused by Rhodes. He was out of shape, me-first and looking for top-dollar. I like JAbe too, but he wanted a lot of coin and had a hard time staying healthy. All is not lost with the departure of those two.
