Looks like the Jets had a good draft, but it’s the same old Jets

I’ve waited and thought about this for a couple days before posting, and on the surface it looks like the Jets had a good draft, but it’s the same old same old. Maybe the next GM and HC will turn it around. Below I ramble about the ineptitude of this organization to draft talented players and a Front Office or scouts to analyze players. Who knows maybe this draft will turn out better than in the past.

This year the Jets might actually have a good draft, even if it was once again heavy on defense and left the offense with holes to fill. The Jets have spent ten straight first round picks acquiring defensive players, but still can’t stop opposing offenses.

The Jets have suffered with huge draft busts over the past decade. Last year’s Darron Lee left a lot to be desired with a lack luster rookie season, but he is at least more hopeful than the 2014 pick, Calvin Prior, who the Jets are trying to unload, but can find no takers. Yet, for all the lacking Prior has, he is still way better than the 2013 pick, Dee Milliner. Sheldon Richardson who was drafted four picks after Milliner has shown good ability, when he wants to and when not in trouble with the team, league or police, but he too has been shopped around, with no suiters to be found.

The woes continue with picks like Quinton Coples and Kyle Wilson, both of whom were touted by the coaches as playmakers. The only two first round picks to actually show the ability to be good NFL starters are Muhammad Wilkerson and Leonard Williams. Muhammad played good enough to get an over bloated contract and then he dropped off the face of the planet last season. Leonard has been playing great when on the field, but will he be able to carry the load if and when Richardson is gone?

Yet, for all the woes of the Jets 1st round picks, the second round has been even worse. The last second round pick of the Jets to make the Pro Bowl was Mark Gastineau, who was drafted in 1979; a decade before any of this year’s draft picks were even born. By the start of the season, none of the second round picks between 2012 and 2015 will be on the team any longer. Well, maybe Devin Smith (IR again) who was drafted in 2015, but lacked to perform, two knee surgeries, fractured ribs, and a punctured lung, it would be a wonder why. The 2016 second round pick Christian Hackenberg did not take a single snap in his rookie season, and whom many have already labeled a bust. Hopefully he can prove them wrong, I'm rooting for him.

Since 2011, the Jets have drafted 20 players in rounds 1-3, with 14 of the picks being defensive, including all our first round picks, and only 6 offensive, which including two QBs which neither has lived up to expectations.

This all is contributed to by the fact the Jets have not had an Offensive coach as their head coach since Rich Kotite. I can’t even believe that, yet I know it’s true. For those that can’t remember it was over twenty years ago. Maybe after this season in which the Jets would be very lucky to get six wins, they will finally go in a new direction and hire a credible offensive coach and a good scouting department.

The Jets haven't drafted well in a long time. Good to know.

I don't get it. The Jets had a good draft, but it's the same old Jets who don't draft well?

Football is his religion. You can't expect him to be rational about it.

This is like the whiniest message board.

The Jets had a good draft, but they're still the same Jets. So keep that in mind.

Probably should've waited and thought about for a few more days before posting.

The solution to the Jets problems is to hire another offensive coach in the mold of Rich Kotite.

No NFL team has a more professional crew of Darksiders than the Jets. It's what makes coming here on a daily basis fun.

Imagine what this thread would be like if we had drafted Deshaun Watson or DeShone Kiser.

    Hellfire and brimstone, baby.

we all know why trubisky was his choice in the draft

mahomes would have had him conflicted to the point of self-mutilation

First, tell my why Trubisky was not only my choice over inferior QBs like Watson, but also the pick of every team including the Bears who had to jump up to get him first? Trubisky was more accurate, and did a hell of a lot more with a lot less around him. Watson is a punk.

Second, Mahomes was my second choice if we had went with a QB, but not at #6. He is smart, has a father who taught him right, grew up in a Professional sports home, so he knows how to act, and best of all he has a canon for his arm. His footwork, accuracy and not playing under center was my concerns.

Yet, I feel you were making a racist jump, which proves you are the one with racist thoughts. I hated the Geno Smith pick because he sucks, not because he was black.

I don't let skin color affect who I root for, or else I would be a hockey fan instead of football. So fuck off you racist prick, no one should have to defend themselves to libtards like you.

To bespeak the obvious, the jets stink because of the guys making the decisions at the top. I do not think Mike Mac is a good GM. Although a team plays FIVE OL at a time, and only TWO WRs, Safeties and CBs, Mike does not get the math. In three drafts he has now drafted, what, a total of TWO offensive lineman? The jets current Offensive line is made up of retreads and other teams discards--so he drafts NO OL in his 9 picks in 2017. He justifies this by claiming it was a weak OL class--that means don't pick any? Do you really think Wesley Johnson, Beachum, or Shell would start on ANY other NFL team? The sad sacks Jags could not wait to get rid of Beachum, so then Mac guarantees him $12M? As long as Mike Mac ANNUALLY ignores the OL in the draft, and continues to stock up everywhere else, the jets are going nowhere. Prior to the draft, I thought that WR, even without considering Devin Smith, was where we had our most depth. Then he burns 3rd and 4th round picks for two more. Seriously, two safeties, and 2 WRs with the first 4 picks? Give me a break! I guess Mike Mac missed the memo, something about winning in the trenches.

As far as pre-draft grades and where we acquired the players, on paper it looks like a good draft. No one originally thought Jamal Adams would be there at #6, not even the Jets, and that is why we were trying to trade up to get him. Leggett was projected at a 3rd round pick by almost every draft sight, yet we nabbed him in the 5th round. The Jets traded down three times getting extra players and acquired extra 5th round for next year.

The players may not pan out, but for now it looks like a good draft, especially considering the Jets almost screwed the pooch by trading away picks to move up and get Adams.
