Sell me on Mac. Tell me which one of the 22 players Mac has drafted are going to be future All-Pro's for our New York Jets. Make me optimistic the Jets are going to draft well in 2018 with Mac as the GM. I underlined the players that fell within the first 100 picks for each draft, because the first 100 picks are supposed to be chalk full of talent, and thus far Mac's picks within that range have yielded the following: Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, ArDarius Stewart, Darron Lee, Christian Hackenberg, Jordan Jenkins, Leonard Williams, Devin Smith, and Lorenzo Mauldin. That right there is why the Jets will finish with a 20-28 record with Mac running the drafts and Bowles learning how to be a head coach. 2017 Draft Jamal Adams, S, Rd 1, (6) Marcus Maye, S, Rd 2, (39) ArDarius Stewart, WR, Rd 3, (79) Chad Hansen, WR, Rd 4, (141) Jordan Leggett, TE, Rd 4, (150) Dylan Donahue, DL, Rd 5, (181) Elijah McGuire, RB, Rd 6, (188) Jeremy Clark, CB, Rd 6, (197) Derrick Jones, CB, Rd 6 (204) 2016 Draft Darron Lee, OLB, Rd 1, (20) Christian Hackenberg, QB, Rd 2, (51) Jordan Jenkins, OLB, Rd 3, (83) Juston Burris, CB, Rd 4, (118) Brandon Shell, T, Rd 5, (158) Lac Edwards, P, Rd 7, (235) Charone Peake, WR, Rd 7, (241) 2015 Draft Leonard Williams, DE, Rd 1, (6) Devin Smith, WR, Rd 2, (37) Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB, Rd 3, (82) Bryce Petty, QB, Rd 4, (103) Jarvis Harrison, G, Rd 5, (152) Deon Simon, NT, Rd 7, (223)
The problem is this, a GMs job is not just the draft, so it's impossible to grade just on draft. It's about FA, contracts, contract that give team financial flexibility, PS players, trades, undrafted FA. That's why I think Mac has done a good job overall, obviously he's not going to get everything right and he has not drafted the right QB yet. I'm afraid he won't draft the right QB again in the upcoming draft, not sure if it's him or the scouts but it seems like there is a problem assessing QBs with this FO. I also believe the players being all pro is not up to Mac, that's a development and scheme responsibility with the coaching staff that determines how players progress. Not sure how much this convinces you, but I have been on record saying that the problem with the team is scheme and coaching, I could be wrong and I have no problems admitting I'm wrong, I would like to see a different staff on sideline with the group of players jets have.
I have bolded who I think will be with us for a time to come and have great upside, I am not sure of the protocol of how they become all pro and not really that interested as long as they are good players for the Jets who cares, hell the HOF is arbitrary on who gets in at best. So from my own observations he is improving draft on draft, take the last draft, I think he may have hit on a good all round bunch, the injuries hit the group hard and that isn't something that is easy to predict. Of course the other two drafts look brutal.
I will say this, he's done a terrific job giving us cap space, but the thing is John Idzik did that, and it got him fired. Mac went on a free agent frenzy in 2015 with the money Idzik saved in 2014. The only things I can truly give Mac credit for is the Robby Anderson find and the Sheldon Richardson trade, and I feel like finding Anderson had more to do with luck than skill. Perhaps Mac is due for a run of luck. I just don't feel like he's the answer when it comes to drafting players or finding them in free agency. Perhaps I'm wrong. I hope I am if we keep Mac.
What got Idzik fired was not the financial flexibility he gave the team, it was the blow hard fat man named Rex, who influenced Idzik and the scouts to select a bunch of players the team had no business selecting.
I don't recall seeing anything from Stewart or Hansen. It's pretty much been the Anderson and Kearse show this year at wide receiver, with a few games of magic out of tight end from ASJ. I have seen a few flashes from Elijah McGuire (Jags and Saints), but I haven't really see that much to get too excited about. Other than that, I feel like your players you bolded on defense all could become decent players, but nothing to brag about.
That's the first time I ever read that Rex forced Idzik to draft who he wanted him to. Has either come out and admitted to that since each have departed the Jets?
I am not a big Believer in Mac and I don't think he can win me back over,,,,,,,too many whiffs in the draft,,,way too many especially the high picks,,,,,anybody on this board could have drafted Adams and Williams but we don't get paid to make the other selections correctly, Mac does.
Williams and Adams were the safe picks in those respective drafts with the 6th pick. Personally I would have gone for Watson with the 6th pick last year, but I like to take chances. Mac doesn't take chances until the 2nd round...
No, and I prefer to not get into a discussion of what happened back then, all I know for sure is that I'm happy both were fired. But getting back to your thread, I would allow Mac to continue as GM with a new CS led by an offensive minded HC.
Well you need to speak to the OC about our young WR's they have talent, you know it and I know it, they have caught pretty much everything thrown their way and that is all you can ask of them on the pitch, now they just need to be thrown the ball more often and the bigger plays will come. I bolded them as like I said I think they had upside and will be good players for us, I disclaimed the all pro part as that is a hard thing to predict. Still it is about opinions and there are people with a brighter outlook on life and those that like to dress in black and listen to goth music and play with knives for pleasure I have been down the darker road and now prefer to go the other way until proven different, Hack gets one more year of support in the vain hope he can improve despite the coaches and I fear Petty has cooked his goose already, more because he is already old for basically a rookie.
I'm not a fan of Macc, but I'm not sure he's that bad either. The thing is that the Jets need a very good, or great, GM to rebuild them, and while I can't say Macc won't ever become vg or great, he isn't that now. Coupled with Bowles as the HC, and I don't see this team heading in the direction I think it's need to...it's on limbo - not terrible, not very good. I think they need to be bold and hire a Pres. of Football Ops and let him hire a new GM and CS. I don't think that's what the Johnsons will do, just what they need to do.
Where are we in relation to when he started? He inherited a 4-12 team with a lot of money to spend. 3 years later we are a 5 wIn team with lots of money to spend. At best we are relatively in the same place we were before he started. And he’s completely failed to address the QB position. What about any of this warrants his continued employment?
Aside from Hack the biggest whiff on that list is poor Devin Smith. Although the fact that he was a total whiff I'm not sure was either his or Mac's fault. I suspect if we went over what else we could have taken at that pick with 20/20 hindsight it'd be cringe-worthy.
