Eric Mangini was just on SNY on "Open Mike." I'm not sure what channel it is for different areas, mine in Middlesex County, NJ (Comcast Cable) is Channel 73. Now, I consider myself a fairly intelligent guy. And believe me, I'm not going to say that I'm much above average, but I do think that I've got enough upstairs to have gotten me to a fairly comfortable position in life. After college, I was an officer in the military and ran a five-man Advisory Team in Vietnam. I came back home and ran a family-owned company with about 22-25 employees for the past 30+ years, so I know what it's like to manage and to have managers report to me and to fail and succeed, etc. I also know when I'm being bullshitted and when the manager knows WTF he's doing. I'm also a huge Jets fan; been one all my life. I'm not the most informed guy on the board, nor the most knowledgeable, as most of you know, but I do know a thing or two about the Jets and I follow them with dilegence and pride. Anyway, I've got to tell all of you this... This man, our head coach... this is the real deal, fellas. This guy is the genuine article. I'd hire this guy in a heartbeat. He's intelligent as hell (and I am NOT kidding), yet knows the X's and O's as well as any football geek on this board. I was so damned impressed with this interview, I don't even know where to start. Seriously... I just don't know where to start. Perhaps somebody else on the board can pick up where I'm losing focus and fill you in, but he just seems to have a handle on anything Jets, period. He talked about almost every player... and he does it in such detail he can tell you how the f@cking guy ties his shoes. He knows the work ethic, he describes what their strengths are and between the lines you can tell he knows their deficiencies too. He is literally on top of everything. He talked about hiring Schottenheimer, for example. He said he got tired of planning against him. He noticed how many hours it took... "A long week," he said. "He throws everything at you, which is the reason I reached out to him." This guy is no bullshitter, guys. I'm going to tell you right now, any of you who still have doubts that this guy is capable of taking us to the promised land, you're sadly mistaken. I don't know if he can do it because there are plenty of obstacles along the way with every season, but make no mistake... and I'll say this again... you make a huge mistake if you think this guy is not the right guy for us. He's the right guy at the right time to give us the best chances of winning a SB.
You wise-ass! Here I'm trying to be serious! (LOL). All seriousness aside, he's a focused guy. He laughs on the side about the "p" word and all that, but he is a focused SOB when it comes to the Bills game this weekend, and I believe him when he says "All else doesn't matter."
Forgive me if I belabor the point, but I just sat in front of my TV with the sound way up (because it's hard to hear some of the questions) and I'm just sitting there going... "Son of a bitch, I think this guy can really do it." It was like, this revelation or something. Not trying to freak people out, but you know when you suddenly realize that, after all these years of HC's saying they have the answers and they're going to do this and going to do that and the Jets are going to be winners, etc., etc., and then you realize, "Holy shit... this guy is not a bullshitter." I really think he can do it!
I like Mangini more and more every week. He's been a great Head Coach so far. I hope he stays with the Jets for a long time.
Damn dude you've got me pumped. On a side note sorry for being a dick in another thread I am just grouchy because I have a herniated disc in my back. (Baamf, vinsjets, Section 227, row 5, sorry for being an asshole.) Anyways, Mangini seems like a great coach. The only thing that worries me is that other teams will be trying to initiate our coaching staff. Lets just hope they stick together and improve our team.
No apology necessary... all in a day's posting. I have a herniated disc between L-4 and L-5. I function pretty well with it though.. probably been there for many years and jumping out of perfectly good C-130's when I was younger probably didn't help, but my back's okay unless I do something stupid, like bend at the waist and lift something heavy. Get some therapy for that, Bricket. Excersize helps and doing all the things they tell you to do definitely improves the pain level. If all else fails, Ibuprofin, alcohol and a good Jets win helps.
you're welcome. :wink: (i made it) But about Mangini, I am extremely excited to have this man as our Head Coach. I can only hope that he, Schottenheimer, and Westhoff (and maybe Sutton) can stick together for years to come and lead this team to the glory land. I would be absolutely ecstatic if Mangini is still the head coach in 10-15 years (assuming he keeps progressing and continuing with what he is doing). If he is still here that far down the road, then it means that the Jets are winning consistently, and it probably means that Mangini can proudly wear at least one Jets Super Bowl Ring!
Great post brother, I had a feeling when they hired this guy that he was something special..From the moment he started talking about "Core Values" and drafted all high character guys you just knew this dude was going to do what he's tells us the fans..Smart,tough,consistent and knows football up and down..Using 2006 technology to help players get better..The whole package..you are right 227/5 Eric Mangini is the real deal and lets hope he stays a NYJ for a long time!!
I get this goofy grin on my face whenever they show Mangini on the sidelines on TV. It's the same thing I do when I see Reyes in the dugout. You just get a good feeling about guys like Mangini.
I like Mangini as well. What I like most is that many coaches say the equivalent of "use your god given ability to make plays to help us win" which is NOT A PLAN! That may work once or twice, but that's not a plan for consistent success. Working on run fits, working on communication, working on understanding the position, understanding your assignment and other people's assignments, now THAT is a plan for success. THose are legitimate goals that you can evaluate and improve on. Much sounder basis for success than, say, "big time players make big time plays in big time games." oh really? How? In short, I totally agree. The man is not a bullshitter. He's got a plan and I'm a believer.
You know a lot of teams are kicking themselves for not recognizing this "kid" has talent. Just imagine when he has all the tools.
As a side note....I am really starting to worry about losing Brian Schottenheimer to somebody as a head coach. Then the offense has to start all over again.

As I mentioned, when Mangini was talking about Schottenheimer last night he talked of the "long weeks" he had as a DC up in New England when he had to prepare against Schotti. Tricky stuff with the TE's, moving WR's around at the last minute... confusing stuff which all requires the DEF to work 10 times as hard, because there are so many different configurations the DEF has to be able to react to at the last second. This is nothing unusual, but Schottenheimer does such a damned good job of it that he leaves a lot of these DEFs in a predicament as the ball is snapped. Still, I don't think we should get too paranoid just yet over losing Schotti. We've still got to prove this all works against solid teams with winning records and after all, we just hired the guy! Woody would be smart though, to reward these guys after this terrific comeback year and give them a little bonus.
