It's just a fluff piece, really. Just gotta hope this bonding thing translates into W's http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on...picked-jets-as-new-team-because-of-geno-smith
I think he's just being supportive, which is good, but I think the Bowles connection is what would have convinced him to come here. He credits Bowles and Tony Sparano for helping him thru his mental health issues and getting him on the right path. I admire Marshall's struggles with mental illness and how he is now using his position in the spotlight to shed light on these problems.
No one would be happier than me, to see Marshall help Geno succeed this season. However, Geno has shown nothing to make anyone think he can actually play well. Luckily for him, Jets fans aren't asking him to play great. Just not terrible. Average play from Geno would satisfy most fans, and Marshall himself probably.
I haven't been down on Geno as much as a lot of people because we haven't seen what he can do with some actual talent around him. Yes, he stunk it up as a rookie because half the time he was running for his life. And because he was a rookie. Last year wasn't much different. He just didn't have enough talent around him. With few exceptions, QB's are usually only as good as their supporting cast. So this year, except for some O-line questions, he has the talent around him. THIS is the year he should be judged as a bust or not.
There is a difference though. He has made so many poor choices (lack of talent around him or not) that makes you scratch your head. Worst than that: It seems he never learns. I agree though, he deserves a final shot this season. I hope he makes the best of it.
I didn't mean to absolve him of any blame. I agree with you he made some horrible decisions. I'll just be holding my breath along with you and all other Jets fans every time he steps back to throw.
LOL, we'll see how this plays out, when Geno is overthrowing Marshall, and not finding him when he's wide open
That was one of the most puzzling aspects of that article and Marshall's choosing the Jets because of Geno, because Marshall raves about Geno's football IQ. I can't remember who Marshall played with before Cutler, but either that QB was dumber than Cutler, or Marshall just can't remember. If Geno is the smartest QB that he has ever played with, I feel sorry for him, unless Geno has had us all fooled. I understand that Geno was thrown to the wolves, had little or no offensive talent around him, was often running for his life, and may have had grossly incompetent coaching from the Jets under Mornhinweg and Rex, but still...
And that's all you need to know to understand that the article is complete bullshit. There are a lot of QBs WRs will want to go play for. Prolific guys who you know are likely to get you 90-100 catches. Whatever you think of Geno, he's not a guy any WR is going to flock to, not yet. Marshall is nearing the end of his career and fancies himself as a TV personality--so he needed to get to the biggest market in the country to promote his brand. He's treating Jet fans like idiots with comments like that. _
When the overthrows start happening he'll wish he was somewhere else. Sent from my LG-LS720 using Tapatalk
Marshall picked the Jets because the market will help his media career and because they offered to give him more money.
From what I understand the new Bears' front office actually did let Marshall and his agent call around and select among the teams who had made offers; it was just a showing of respect for a veteran.
The highest bidder for Brandon Marshall was a 5th? That's hard to believe. The Jets did say they promised to "sweeten the deal" for Marshall as per their explanation for the pay raise a couple weeks ago, which leads one to believe he was having input or some shit like that.
